I think “John Wayne Gary Jr.” is actually deeper than it lets on. At first glance, the ending kinda just comes off as, “wow I’m really not that much different from this serial killer because I’ve done bad things too😱,” but I think it’s actually about being ashamed of your own sexuality. Anti gay propaganda was very popular in the 60’s and 70’s (it’s still everywhere, but that’s beside the point), and serial killers like Gacy were often used as examples of the “evils” of homosexuality. Sufjan is queer, so I think he’s comparing himself to Gacy to sort of show the guilt that looms over a queer person in a society that constantly tells you that your existence is an abomination. That’s just my interpretation at least.

you’re so right lizard man, and that is why the song is so special to so many.

ive always seen it this way too. it makes the song even more tragic than it already it is.

I think it's about the things nobody knows about that we feel shame over.

To me, this album is the grandest expression of a completely fulfilled album experience, maybe not the absolute best album, but certainly the most complete and fulfilling experience in my opinion. It is so cohesive and layered that it hurts my head thinking about how much effort Sufjan put into it.

i didn’t think i’d come back to this that much either but i find myself often getting one of the melodies or songs stuck in my head in general and i just play it on repeat

Like any double album (or any album with a running time that's more than 30 minutes), it takes time to get into. Stick with the 3-4 tracks you really like, and then listen to the whole thing again. Suddenly, something else jumps at you and becomes your favorite. There should never be any obligation to immediately get lyrics or music.

Back in 2003, this was the album that introduced me into the world of left field pop adjacent folk splashed artsy orchestral singer songwriter music

loved the reaction! I love this album dearly. Predatory Wasp might be my favorite sufjan song. It really captures the feeling of adolescent friendship and love. You should really react to his album The Age of Adz! It's much more different than this or carrie and lowell, it's his more electronic side and it's incredible!

Great reaction! While perhaps not RUclips reaction material, Sufjan has an incredible Christmas album that is beloved by many. Now Age of Adz on the other hand, THAT is true RUclips reaction material.

I think you should also check out “The Avalanche”, it’s an album comprised solely of all the songs that were cut from the Illinoise album. And I personally like it more than Illinoise.

Illinois's worse serial killer. My Dad's 8th grade classmate was murdered by Gacy.

If you want to understand another part of who Sufjan is, I highly recommend listening to Seven Swans. From what I understand, he's a deeply religious man, and Seven Swans is probably the only Christian album I've ever really enjoyed.

A truly beautiful album. This music packs such an emotional punch. "Chicago" makes me weep with the incredible beauty of the music and imagery of the lyrics.
    Great reactions to this gem.
A few great albums that are right up here:
THE DELGADOS: "Hate" and "Universal Audio" (both albums are great... the former has the same producer as FLAMING LIPS... so you'll recognize the massive sound)
GRANDADY: "The Sophtware Slump" Like Neil Young fronting Radiohead, this fantastic album from the turn of the century is brilliant from start to finish.

My personal favorite sufjan, even though it's not perfect. I'm pretty sure he played most of the instruments on this album himself. Would love to see you react to his previous album "Michigan". Has elements of the baroque pop of Illinois ,but is a lot more stripped back and the lyrics are more personal. The b side record The Avalanche has one of his best songs (mistress witch), as does Songs for Chrismas (that was the worst christmas ever). Definitely don't miss out on those two tracks.

If you liked the last song, it's basically his homage/version of a Steve Reich piece. Plenty of good stuff to dive into!
