- Is Initial: D telling the truth about how the AE86 "trains the driver?" What I learned from drifting the hachiroku, explained during VR-Style Triple Monitor POV Drifting. Happy AE86 Day!
In the Initial: D First Stage Anime and Manga, Bunta Fujiwara explains that “the car trains the driver” when speaking of Takumi’s skill at drifting and mountain street racing. Let a real drifter explain in what ways that’s true!

I'm happy I learned in low powered cars on the sim, made me realize and appreciatehow much more capable and how much larger the "safety net" is for high power gripped up cars. Really enjoy these kinds of videos as well. Thanks again for the content
Thanks for sharing your thoughts! When I’m learning a new course I always do a slow sighting lap, and for Touge or circuits practicing in an NA miata or the like is always where I start for the same reason 👌🏻 Glad you enjoyed it! 🍻
High powered low grip cars are underrated still
@@fujineetomori those are pretty fun for sure 👌🏻
I start drifting in an toyota celica ta22 with 86bhp rwd. Never used the handbrake. Drift thru every turn on the public road. That was 18 years ago. People who use a handbrake are not drifters period. Drifting is about the feeling, feel the car and know what the car does. Its all about momentum and steering.

Really nice that you explained that. It's interesting that it's a similar reasoning to how the AE86 trains the driver about driving grip fast. Especially when and how to break said grip to corner even faster.
Yeah, momentum cars are slow in a straight line but can teach you a lot in either grip or drift 👍🏻
RUclips algorithm brought me here so I think you're channel will blow up! You make great content, dude - cheers! From Australia.
Thank you! This video definitely seems to be going well. Thanks for dropping a comment!
I recently starting sim drifting and built my rig to match the measurements and placements of the parts in an 86 and learning to drift in the stock Tuned AE86 on AC has been extremely difficult. After ~75 hours I finally tried the E30 and immediately started drifting after struggling for atleast what seemed like a month. It was like magic. I watched hours of your videos, and rewatched the drift bible probably a hundred times. I had no idea that the 86 in Initial D didn't didn't have power steering and so it forced me to gain insane arm strength, quick reaction time, and extremely sensitive throttle control. I havn't even moved onto clutch kicking or e-brake imitations. Its just with the throttle and brake. The 86 really does train you holy shit.
Thank you putting this up! I’ve been having trouble with the 86 more than others(I’m still super new to drifting and cars 😂) so it’s good to hear that this car IS different than other “easier” to drift cars.
Mostly just a little underpowered. Technically they tend to have a bit less rear grip too due to being solid axle and their small weight makes them feel kind of like a bouncy go kart but they’re fun!
@@KameTrick and it being nearly 50/50 weight front to back
@@KameTrick the reason why takumi is so good is because he eliminates that bounce whenever he drifts it makes the water in the cup spin around the edge.
@@FuntimeAG yes, that doesn’t have anything to do with a specific chassis though. A driver with that kind of weight shift skills can use it in any car in the Initial: D series and be top tier 👍🏻
Perfect explanation. Hence why watching old touge videos are so cool to me. Many skilled drivers!
Yeah it’s a blast watching those old vids 👌🏻
I mostly drive formula drift cars now, but I still always warm up with this or a 180 with the turbo on like 20%. The formula cars have the headroom to really stretch an high angle and reach turns that don’t transition smoothly, but until you master stretching low power cars you won’t be able to do sh*t with formula cars.
its a completely different ball game.. Comp cars like VDC and Tsujigiri transition incredibly quick, your reaction time (especially on the throttle) has to be that much quicker. Its a common misconception that if you know how to drive low HP cars you can drive anything.. That simply isn't true. There's things you can learn that apply to both situations but its not like everything you learn will carry over. I remember when i switched to VDC it was like i had to learn everything again. Its just not the same thing.
@@transient442 I disagree. Sorry.
It’s not about translation of feel. It’s about understanding the limits of a car so you can stretch transitions / use angle deceleration as a brake etc. If you can’t react instantly to the spring response of something softer like a low hp drift car you won’t have a shot in hell of reacting to something with way more grip and power and essentially 3 inputs of throttle being very little, a lot, or none.
And vdc cars don’t transition quickly. They just have springs that can hold much more energy making the release of the energy result in faster transitions. If you have control of these cars you feed the transition rather than allow the cars stored energy to swing it like with street cars. But in ordered to feed transitions and control these cars you must understand the nature of a loaded spring in a car that is much more predicable… like a low powered softy street car.
@@MrRealeyesrealize first off i never said anything about translation of feel.. i specifically said there's basic techniques that can translate
Secondly, you say VDC doesn't transition fast then go on to explain why VDC transitions fast.. If the only cars you've driven are WDTS you are going to struggle in something like VDC and this is simply because you are reacting based off what a WDTS type car would do.
@@transient442 I think you just want to be in disagreement.

hi, i just started sim drifting, and wonder if i should start with more powerful car (BMW M3 drift) or like a AE86?
i do feel like powerful car helps recovering from mistakes i made
Well you can try both, and if u take the E30 drift, then chance the tires to street 90's because the semislicks have too much grip for controlled drifting.
wow
i just started using the ae86 in carx drift racing

Should i stick with low power cars while learning to drift in AC or pick something with a bit more power than swap out once ive got some better muscle memory and reflexes?
Im stuck with my crappy G29 for now but would it be worth chucking on a full size wheel and ditching the the small 1 until i can afford a new wheel and pedal set.
Slower speeds mean slower direction changes, so the WDTS AE86 is a great starter car IMO. Their s chassis in the street patch are good but make a fair bit of power, feel free to try them if the low power AE is too frustrating.
A bigger wheel will just make it harder for your wheelbase to countersteer unless it’s actually lighter...one of those function or form questions that only you can answer 🤔

Yeah, you def want a belt-only or DD wheel for good self steer in drift 👍🏻
If you drift the normal ae86 that problem is eliminated. You Just need to steer as less as possible to predict the car movements and where its gonna exit the corner.

I dont have a good Wheel setup neither a good pc so i play lfs and sometimes assetto. I can drift the normal ae86 pretty well. See the problem on assetto is that i cant bind a button to my clutch and i cant make the car transition manual not sequental. But yeah i Just do braking drifts. When i approach the corner i slow down doing heel and toe and in the same time steer hard then i release the brakes and i countersteer as less as possible applying alot of throttle depending on the corner. Sometimes i dont even brake.
the drift 86 is a very mild drift car to the point where it performs really well even in grip situations
I agree 100% especially about the WDTS one. I really enjoy bombing the touge in it whether I’m trying to get big angle or go fast 👌🏻
i heard you are the guy to talk to about this issue. i have recently started loading into games and finding myself not able to drive or change gears. the in game steering wheel doesnt move. halp
That means either your hardware actually has an issue (loose or broken cables, or a potentiometer or sensor has broken or a wiring problem...in which case I’m not the best resource for potential fixes)
Or it’s a key bindings issue in AC. Sometimes CM is bad about losing key bindings, but once you get it set it tends to keep working. First, always make sure you fully power on your wheel and pedals before opening CM. If you open CM before the wheel startup sequence finishes you’ll usually have a lot more issues. Second, try closing CM, opening CM, rebinding your keys and starting a race. Give this 2 or 3 tries. Sometimes it will work with just this. If all else fails, close CM, open AC using the default Steam launcher, bind all your keys in it. Close it. Open CM, bind all your keys in it, launch a driving session. Usually this fixes it, or some combination of the above and as much patience as needed, good luck!

I mainly practice car levels that I actually drive in real life, but I mess with them from time to time. I haven’t made a specific “how to drive” then type video yet though... ruclips.net/video/frn9WPLAqYw/видео.html
@@KameTrick ill be waiting for those. Thank you very much, love your content.
Master the slow cars first. And start on a WDT formula w the turbo at like 30% (they make a lot of n/a torque) and work your turbo up as you get better and better. But unless you can run a Formula track and reliably hit all of the zones I wouldn’t consider progressing. (until you can do like road Atlanta or something) Formula drift cars are high grip and power to place the car exactly where you want it. But you have to know how to place slower cars where you want them or there’s no chance you’ll be able to react to the sensitivity of the formula cars.
Hope this helps.

Shortcut like teleport to pits, glance left/right and turn signals? Or do you mean something else.

What's the name of the sim? Would you recommend it to learn how to drive? Or at least is it realistic in terms of physics, driving, etc?
Its assetto corsa. Its supposed to be super realistic. Only issue i have is (at least in VR) is its hard to tell how fast you're going. So it feels like you lose control going 20mph around a turn when you're actually going like 50-60mph. Really fun game, it can be tweaked to be as realistic as possible or just for fun
As Kuni mentioned, this is Assetto Corsa for PC with mods. It’s not very good at simulating takeoff from a stop in my opinion, but other than that it does a good job if you want to practice Motorsports. If you were asking about regular driving, it’s not bad, but many of the tracks are wide and flat out for street driving speeds. If you got some mod tracks you could practice driving mountain roads which would be a little more engaging for the learner 👍🏻
i like how since ive never had a handbrake on my sim im used to doing reverse entries and shi with a clutch pedal hahaha, using a handbrake feels like cheating for me lol
well, drifting isnt always about "haha HB goes bbrrr", lot of it has to do with weight transfer and how you set it up towards the entrance of the corner based on a number of factors, like speed, braking force, suspension, stuff like that
A driver who can position the car right without ebrake more often, will perform even better when adding ebrake skills into their bag of tricks, absolutely 👌🏻
Do you drift with or without stability control?
All assists off / 0%, just like in real life 💯

hello guys any drift play ground server pls give us some servers names i want to tandem there and thankyou
Heres how to find and join modded drift servers: ruclips.net/video/iODiW-fJV_k/видео.html
It looks so simple on this sim……86 in real life feels like a beer can being kicked around! Every pebble can fuck up your day!
I miss mine, but it was a time attack build and not a drift car. With a solid axle you drift them sometimes, whether you want to or not 😆 ruclips.net/video/9mUtGpZ7BwA/видео.html
There are some realistic touges inspired by real life ones like gunma cycle sports center aka. Gunsai. All the pebbles and small potholes are there and it's really fun to drive. U have to have perfect throttle control if youre going for speed or else you will either have too much countersteer or lose the rear tires from the ground for a split second and four wheel drift into the woods
The main reason low power cars are gutless in most AC content is because ROLLING_RESISTANCE_SLIP is about 10 - 12x too high on KS tires. The line itself is using a faulty algorithm (Proportional to slip not force, to make it simple) in vanilla to begin with so it should probably just be 0 for vanilla tires.
What the excessive ROLLING_RESISTANCE_SLIP does is bog the car down when the rear reaches a high slipratio or slipangle. It kind of "adds rear grip" when drifting.
I would assume from your comment that you are “the” Arch, known for your AC replacement physics? Thanks for stopping by to drop some knowledge, I’m always happy to learn from experienced people 👋🏻 Several folks have requested I check out your physics swaps, which I will eventually but am slammed with IRL stuff right now😅

Broad strokes, yes. Though some people think 328i’s and 350Z’s are “low powered FR cars” so there’s definitely some room for interpretation. In my mind your low power cars are making sub 200hp, like AE86, Miata/roadsters, and KA 240’s.

Is drift playground always that steep???
Yeah, this is the 2021 retextured version by Project Kaido tho for what it’s worth 👍🏻
Fisheye lens effect, makes it look a lot more curved than it is.

@@KameTrick thank you
@@KameTrick good video in suscribed
@@shanino6237 right on, my channel has all kind of fun drifting in simulators and real life 🤙🏻
@@KameTrick yes
do you think that Ford Sierra is as good drift car as AE86
I got a sierra as a daily. Its kinda nice to slide, but its got an even worse power/weight ratio then the 86. Turbo-versions are nice, but I am talking about the 120 bhp DOHC. I got an S13 as a Project Car and its ... way easier to drift.
It has a better suspension, but I believe it is also heavier and probably makes less power to weight unless you have a turbo. Sometimes availability of the chassis and availability of performance parts is what decides what’s a good car for a given area, though!
@@KameTrick thanks, i live in finland and im going to drift mostly winter and in rain so it think i only need a better suspension to it.
@@tofu042 have you drifted it in dry or only in rain?
@@pietari4916 Drifts perfect in snow, pretty good in rain and only with speed/commitment in the dry. But its also a pretty good daily driver. Kinda like the whole Package for getting groceries and letting the tail slide while doing it.
its waaaaaaaayyyyy too easy to find youve just hot lapped for 2 hours straight in this game lol
For reeaaalllll I’m always surprised how long it’s been in sim haha
my friend over here tellin me supercars in dirt rally are harder to drive. lmao he knows nothing about driving
You definitely watch Initial D. Lol
no computer assist
Absolutely 👌🏻
Thanks, i hooked up a keyboard to my tesla and i was drifting really well (this is a joke)
Hahaha
@@KameTrick wait bro u responded 😳 btw thanks i was thinking of getting a wheel and ur vids inspired me to do so
@@dioxvr7708 my recommendations on wheels is in the description of my vids FWIW ✌🏻
@@KameTrick Ight thanks for now ima get a g29 bc I got a pretty low budget, but I will slowly upgrade to better wheels. Thanks for the recommendations!
So I’m basically making my life harder cause I don’t have a e break in my sim and I like the to drift the ae86😂 and I’m a bigger
It will impact how you drive, for the better. You’ll want an ebrake eventually though, it’s a useful tool 👍🏻
@@KameTrick alright I’ll try to get one👌🏼
Has anyone ever told you, you look and sound like Seth rogan lmao you resemble him
Haha a few times, can’t say I mind lol
Heh, i just hate high powered cars, they're boring and i know for sure that I would never have one anyway.
Low power cars are really possible to get and also much more fun to drive aggressively
High power cars are easy to drive at the newb level, but when you actually push a higher power to its limits it is not boring IMHO, but they are not as relatable to most people as something with 2-300 hp 👍🏻 I doubt I’ll ever be able to justify the cost of 500-1000hp 🤷🏻♂️
