  • In the first video in this two part series, I cut a large limb off an oak tree and inoculate it with shiitake mushroom plug spore. My spore dowels and sealing wax are from FungiPerfecti.com. [ no coupon yet ] Part 2 will be produced in 9-12 months, once the logs are fully colonized and ready to produce mushrooms.

    This is my second time purchasing plug spore from Fungi Perfecti, as my first set of logs had reached the end of their production time and it was time to make more. It was amazing to see a log sprouting mushrooms from spore that I put there. I know you'll love the process too. Thanks for watching.

    Good video. A bit of advice though, regarding the oak tree--an arborist once told me that oak trees should not even be trimmed until they go dormant in late fall or the tree can become diseased and die.

    Thanks for the tutorial! This is our first time in planning to grow shiitake mushrooms and we are excited thinking about it. As we watched you chopping down your oak branches, we're also looked at our oak tree as well to follow your directions. "Sa-buy-dee" is the greeting for Laotians! 😊

      Yay! I’m excited you will try this. One tip, if you can, store your logs while they are colonizing away from oak trees…under pines for example. Oak trees will drop lots of spores from fungi that attack oak trees. It makes the shiitake have to battle for dominance. I lost about half of these logs to fungi civil war. Thank you for watching. Thank you for sharing the Laotian greeting.

    Awesome! Smart man…oh that the world was as wise as you, lad. I love Paul Stamets and his company, fungi perfecti.
    We have some oak trees stumps across the street and my neighbors are known to burn them but I urged one of my neighbors not to do that with the most recent stump, but to inoculate it with fungus instead so that it can be removed naturally overtime with an overall benefit to nature instead of the detrimental effect of burning it with fuel.
    Please keep us updated with your produce.

      A rick is 4'x8'x16″ cubic feet, which is a third of a cord. But the volume lost by the logs being cylindrical doesn't count so it isn't really a volume. You make a pile and measure the length, width and height and multiply. The real volume is approximately π times 128 cubic feet.

    Ive seen mixed reviews about wax, not sure if it's necessary.. think its a nominal thing?
    Like maybe a few less flushes over the course of a year or 3?

    • @GreenShortzDIY
      @GreenShortzDIY  Год назад

      I’ve heard this as well…that the wax is optional. My understanding is that it preserves moisture and speeds up colonization. After that is complete it’s likely less important. It could also protect the purity of the colonization, which might be more significant. This batch of logs has poorly because of contamination of other fungus, mainly on the surface. I’ve heard it’s best to culture the logs of oaks in the shade of other tree species. Under other oaks, they just get showered with spores of stuff that affects oaks. Unfortunately, in this case, all I have are oak trees. :-) In the next go round, I’d move them to other side of my house with no trees. I’d have to create shade, but that’s doable. Hope this helps. Thank you for watching.

    Thanks for this video! I was hoping to find out, do I need to replug after harvest, or will the plugs produce continually?

    • @GreenShortzDIY
      @GreenShortzDIY  3 года назад +3

      The logs will produce mushrooms for multiple years, every 3-4 weeks, on a single inoculation (colder weather slows down production). The rule of thumb is one year of production for every inch in diameter. I've not gotten that much longevity out of mine. I'll be producing part 2 of this video in a month or two, once it gets warmer. To get the logs to flush they are soaked in rain water for 24-36 hours and then sheltered under a shed roof. They will sprout mushrooms in 4-6 days. The mushrooms are picked and then the logs are rested for 2 weeks. Then the process can be started again. I'll divide my set of logs into 3 groups, so I can be flushing one group all the time. Thanks for watching.
