*that is probably the best moment as that's really the only footage of him playing heroes and villains with the group as he originally performed onstage (pre piano phase)*

Every thing about this show is hillarious. From the moment high Carl found the camera singing god only knows, and stared into it for a whole verse, to al mike and Brian tripling up on wouldn’t it be nice, (with Brian singing each word at whatever pitch he wanted) to Dennis lecturing Carl, etc
I find Dennis's feigned shock at Carl's swearing hilarious. You know the world has turned upside down when Dennis is the most clean and sober Wilson onstage.

Al Jardine nailed Heroes and Villains. Def the most reliable Beach Boy.
AGREED
Because he's NOT family.
The live version of H&V on the 1973 live album just stomps. That’s honestly my favorite period of the BB as a live band. There’s a live performance of “It’s about time” on RUclips that is soooo good. It’s ironic that “Sunflower” ended up being their lowest selling album, because it’s honestly one of their best.
@@toomuchinformation The Beach Boys visit Roger Moore sings Slow Boat in china
Are these Bruce, Al, and Mike burner accounts???
Wouldn't It Be Nice here is full shenanigans. Brian sings off key during the first chorus (Mike and Al look at him at the same time and Brian just nods along the rhythm as he shuts up). Carl is doing who the fuck knows in the harmonies, sounds like an alcohol induced growling. Al then proceeds to let us know how he feels about it all at 37:59
"Happy times together we've been spending" .
It was part of their charm during this insane period… 😅
@@lowenbad Brain & Roger Moore Sings Slow Boat in china
Still such an interesting document.... You know the Wilson brothers are in trouble when Dennis is the only one making any sense lol.
Carl learned his lesson from this show though. Don’t think he ever showed up for a performance in that condition again
@@subg8858oh no. He definitely did. 😄 He didn’t really get it together until around his first solo album in 1980. Around that time was Brian and Denny’s lowest. The interview on Good Morning America from 1980 is absolutely amazing… and not in a good way. Dennis is drunk out of his mind on live television.
The real kicker is Dennis is that drunk so early in the morning. I can only imagine the nights.
@@BazookaToe Right? I know Mike Love is the villain in the BB story in many ways, and I don’t particularly care for the guy myself, but can you imagine having to deal with this kind of thing? Not to mention Denny marrying his unclaimed daughter. (Which would make her his second cousin). Beach Boys were completely off the rails. The only rock and roll story I can think of that’s more horrific is the Norwegian Black Metal one.
I adore The Beach Boys. So, don’t get me wrong. 🙂
I’m right there with you. In fact they are my number one band. They truly are Americas band as well because they went through all this shit. And at the end of the day they they carried on. What tours as them now I don’t find relevant, but it can’t tarnish their legacy.
Dennis is a total star. Carl is a hot mess-- never thought I'd see him less sober than Denny. Brian is Brian.

Mike is actually a very competent frontman here and is very entertaining and is actually holding the show together
Yeah, he's not his usual dorky self. I guess he had to cover for Brian.
oh really? no one else there is doing anything?
@@4578a not really. Brian and Dennis are really out of it, Carl looks like he’d rather be somewhere else (which he probably was) and Al is just like meh, I’ll do it because I have to. I was there in Melbourne, 18 years old and loving the show. I remember I was in awe of Dennis Wilson, what a star and it was fantastic to see Brian playing with his band. Thanks for posting this very memorable concert.
Yeah, but some other geek is on the drums. Dennis was really pushing it getting stoned those days. Dead five years later after a horrible last half decade. Too bad he didn’t straighten up. Could be a wealthy elderly man today having enjoyed his 40s, 50s, 60s and 70s as a wealthy person in LA’s sunshine on his sailboat, but he lost it all and had a horrible last three years.
That geek is Mike Kowalski, who played with the Boys throughout the 80s and 90s, and played with Mike and Bruce until he retired in 2007.
Dennis was back on drums a year later though. He was pretty much on top of his game in the 1980 concerts.
Al Jardine, so underrated ! Carl rocks !
For Real, outside of any brother-Wilson, esp assuming Brian is anyone’s and everyone’s including my own favorite, Al Jardine, he’s my slowburn favorite original members
@@ENigma-um8zw No kidding. Al sings every bit as well as Carl (and I love Carl). Sometimes you can't even tell their voices apart. He sure pulled his weight in this concert.

I know a lot of people don't like Mike, and a lot of that is probably justified, but he and Al delt with a lot of shit during these shows so you gotta hand it to them for doing their best to keep it together.
Kids Visit to the beach boys, 1977 - 1980
If only Mike had to carry any weight besides contributing one liners for songs and jumping around on stage, the pressure the other 3 felt having to write record after record got to a lot of their contemporaries too. Regardless of how out-to-lunch brothers Wilson be, they are still doing a lot more with instruments in their hands than Mike does in his scally cap.
Mike had the easiest job with the biggest ego in the band. Al Jardine like everyone else who wasn't drunk off their ass for these shows was a professional as much as everyone else and still had to play guitar, harmonize, and sing lead on songs while Mike Love just stood there doing boomer dances while singing in basically one key up front.
Bruh. Mike and Al have dealt with a lot of shit IN THEIR CAREERS.. Having to wipe Brian's because HE'S A GEEEEEENIUS.
Brian himself admitted that Mike was a big part due to his "surf voice ." The only issue I have is the lawsuits vs Al. He can sue Brian all day long. That motherfucker blew his brain away while Mike,Al, Bruce, Carl etc schlepped out his music.

I was there that night. I've since read that this was an horrendous tour with the druggy and drug -free factions in separate cars/rooms etc. , but I had a wonderful night. I'm rusted on, of course...

Beach Boys concerts were/are always good. People got their musical money's worth. They were always lengthy well done shows. These guys would come out & do 35 songs and make it look easy.
They are almost a weird punk band playing church choir songs at times. Love them 💕
@@markw110That's a really good description.
I started seeing their concerts early 1972 and many many times throughout the 70s. They would do about 23-25 songs. No lengthy shows like they did on their 50th anniversary tour.
Beachboys forever, pleasant sound, timeless music for eternity,

al sounds so much like brian on heroes and villains
Dennis really rocked here. Mike was doing his typical obnoxious actions. Brian is barely present and Carl is in rough shape. It’s sad to see him like that.
They nailed it with "Help Me Rhonda".
Hendrix Wilson yeah they did
Went to a cemetery in west L.A. a few years back and saw Carl's grave sight , brought back lots of memories, we went their to see Marilyn Monroe's sight, but Carl"s was special to me
Dennis's, You Are So beautiful has to be his best performance, from what I've heard.
Oh, Denny. So destroyed, yet so beautiful. I'd have to walk in those shoes to comment more...
Charles Lloyd is simply incredible!
Great seeing Carl on the piano!
Wow, what fantastic footage, the only one ever where Denny's the least wasted brother. Lol. Thankfully Carl got his shit together real soon. It just goes to show how the band relied on him, the vocals are likely the very worst they ever recorded.
not really the worst. carl even out of it still has. better tone than everyone else. just goes to show when he’s not managing the stage as usual things really got disjointed
Dennis as the least wasted Wilson... let's ponder this for a moment
Sadly, in my opinion, these are not the worst vocals. The worst vocals, at least on Good Vibrations and God Only Knows, are five days later on March 13 in Perth, the show for which Carl apologized. RUclips has no video of that show, and only audio of those two songs. There are a series of RUclips videos that are labeled Perth that are actually this Melbourne show. There is also now and audiotape on RUclips of an entire Perth show, but it is the show that took place on March 14, the day after the show for which Carl apologized.
@@arcade85_ LOL! True!
@@1401minstrel Yeah, that March 13th show is the lowest point in Carl's stage career. It's actually worse than those two songs. Darlin' from that show is horrid.

Wonderful to see this finally in such great quality, thank you. This is actually one of my favourite periods of Beach Boys history although, like Elvis in his final years, there were good nights and bad. I think on this tour, the band were travelling in two completely separate operations because of various tensions. Poor Carl had to go on national television and make a 'hostage video' apology for their erratic performances. It was really Al Jardine who was trying to set the example through quiet competence. Although they got roasted by the media, the tour was a huge success, they played big outdoor sports arenas right around the country. I love this version of Help Me Rhonda, and for reasons I can't explain, I also like Country Pie. Great stuff!
Actually, Carl's apology was for his performance alone, and it was specifically for the first Perth performance. He placed the blame squarely on his own shoulders for that performance. However, he was asked about the other performances on that tour during that same interview, and he said "They've gone fine." As we can see from this video, that was not the case. The interview can be found here: ruclips.net/video/1zVTSzP2RdM/видео.html
@@1401minstrel Thanks for clarifying that. I'll go back and have another look. It seems that this was one of the rare times that Carl's leadership was lacking, and the result was not ideal. (I still love it though)
@@GeorgeFairbrother Me too. Carl has been my favorite Beach Boy since I saw them in concert in 1978, just three months after the Australia tour. By the way, I spent the entire second half of the that concert standing right next to the footlights maybe 20 feet from Carl, and he was fine. He was not under the influence of anything but joy for all that great music.

What a time to be Al Jardine. In the middle of a dispute going on with all the Wilson’s and an ego maniac Love.
Al was so underrated and invaluable to the group and always consistent.
Thank for comment on Dennis. You can hear his underrated drumming. Hear his timing on I get around. Not easy

This is a fascinating look at the Beach Boys of this era. It's completely worth it even if you just get to Dennis singing "you are so beautiful".
I love Valium'd Carl, I know he caught some flack, but he could sing that song in his sleep with marbles in his mouth and it would still sound divine
Btw later learned that this was the show each of the Wilson brothers were fucking with H, so I think the Valium and alcohol mix was just a pg 13 version of the R rated truth. Not Mike at that point. By 1978 he was well into TM and had not been into substances for at least 10 years. He was just overcompensating for his cousins' conditions. And not Al either. Al kind of carried that show. And actually, Dennis seems to be in pretty good shape here.
Al has always been officially keepin’ it clean. Mike was, and still is, on his TM thing. Carl is on H, Brian I’m assuming is on a shitload of coke and pills. Dennis bizarrely seems pretty sober here

I saw the them on this tour at the Sydney show grounds in what was a massive downpour which was so bad that only a few thousand of us turned up. But those who did were gifted a show that 45 years later is still one of the greatest concerts I ever attended. The stand out memories are the Band who were amazed that so many of us had turned up due to the insane rain and of Charles Lloyd playing of his sax.
How lucky and grateful I am to have seen this fabulous show and be able to have seen he Beach Boys .... even without Brain Wilson.🐳
I was there not far from the stage. We were all standing in ankle - deep mud, & Mike commented - "You all look so clean". Carl's voice was amazing. 😃👍👍
The best recording of their worst performance
Charles carried it
Love the way Charles Loyd sounds with the band, Carl's comping on the piano in particular. I think Carl's out-of-character behavior is the ACT of defiance of all the negativity (particularly Brian turning against Carl and Dennis) and violence (Mike's cousin punched Carl before they went on the stage) imposed by the others in the band. That's why he still sounds great on most of his musical performances. He knew what he was doing. He also thanked Charles Loyd for all his solos after he finished soloing as he's the only one who knew exactly where his solo would end. I wished I were there to say "Carl, pick me up for real!"
Was he in fact punched before this show?
Carl was punched by Rocky Pamplin, who was not related to Mike or any other Beach Boy. Rocky was one of Brian's bodyguards.

At 37:04. Al Jardine calls an audible and tells Brian and Mike they'll all be singing the lead in "Wouldn't It Be Nice". I think he realized everyone was too wasted to do it alone.

They had to hold it together because the Wilsons were all blasted. It's sad to see them like that. They were such incredibly talented musicians. Carl was usually the glue that held the band together, but he's in rough shape here. Despite the high levels of intoxication, this concert is still not terrible. Can’t believe I finally found this. Kinda wish I hadn’t. I met Carl when I was 13. Idolized him after that. Seeing him here I was embarrassed for both of us. Weird.
Great!
We noticed that Dennis played the drums through all of H&V.
David Frost insisted Brian be a part of the tour contract. So, they dragged him out like a performing bear. I was at this concert; Brian was not there at all. Dennis and Mike were not speaking at all, and Dennis would leave the stage any time a 'Mike' song was played. Al spent the night stopping Brian from wandering off stage trying to bum a smoke from a Rodie. It was an interesting night. Years later I met Brian on the Smile tour, I told him I was there in 78. I felt like asking if he was there too.
I saw the band for the second time the previous summer, and I was very excited to hear "All This is That" in the set, even if it was preceded by Mike's TM sermon. It was surprising to see Brian in the touring lineup. The "Love You" material didn't go over so well.
Please make Mike be still..
i'm not sure if he was physically capable of it
You can do that yourself or pay someone else to do it for you.......
