High prices for everything have severely affected my plan. I'm concerned if people who went through the 2008 financial crisis had an easier time than I am having now. The stock market is worrying me as my income has decreased, and I fear I won't have enough savings for retirement since I can't contribute as much as before.

Certainly, there are a handful of experts in the field. I've experimented with a few over the past years, but I've stuck with Melissa Terri Swayne for about five years now, and her performance has been consistently impressive.She’s quite known in her field, look-her up.

In college there was a professor that said "even if your wife works, find a way to live off of one person's income. You never know what will happen and if someone will be unable to work". Those words hit home for me and hubby so we always had that extra income to pay off debt, save, and invest. Now that we have 2 kids we are learning how truly expensive life can get. We've been dipping a bit into that extra income but aren't house poor, car poor, or putting vacations on credit cards.
Here's advice from a mother of 3 grown children and grandmother of 8 grandchildren: Bottom line: THE CHILD WILL NOT CARE. Meaning, don't spend $$$ on things the child will not care about. For example, an expensive diaper bag won't hold the diapers and wipes any better than a cheap backpack or, in a pinch, even a plastic Walmart bag. One thing I would spend $ on, is a really good stroller! But you should be able to find that on sale or used if you shop around. I shake my head at the mothers that have every fashionable baby item. Is it about raising kids or about looking good while raising kids?

Ramsey should have a team of chefs/online personalities who create weekly meal plans at various budget levels, number of people, and kid-friendly, etc… “rice and beans” is directional, and it would be awesome if Ramsey had a team with updated inflation-adjusted food budget and grocery shopping recommendations

This is a good idea. I always try find affordable food that is nutritious. "Rice and beans" would make me sick, my stomach can't handle it... eating rice and beans makes my intestines feel like they are filled with cement😂. I eat a lot of eggs😄
Ramsey has gotten requests to do this but dismissed it as a "dumb idea" on air. I think a "Baby Steps Cookbook" would be an excellent idea.
I just had my 6th baby. We paused our debt payoff and saved money like you and Dave suggest. We even paid my midwife in cash. Thankfully we saved a bunch of money because as soon as my husband went back to work they cut his hours drastically, if we didn’t have money saved we’d be panicking right now. Also babies need a lot less than we think, we barely bought anything for this baby. They really don’t need much, they are only as expensive as we make it. Congrats on your baby George!

Congrats! I was one of six kids and loved it growing up and I am still thankful now as an adult that my kids and I have such a large and fun support system!

Advice don't buy a crib get a play pack. Yes playpack are more comfortable for baby very convenient for baby and parents and safe for baby. With cribs babyes little legs can get stocked dangerous. I've seen people coming into the ER because of a crib. I a not even sure why cribs are still in store.

Father of 11 here. Yes, my wife and I really had 11 kids, on purpose! We always found that our spending dropped precipitously after the birth of a baby. We naturally went into "cocoon mode" and that really saved money. With a tiny little baby, there's not much you can do other than stay home! The cost of raising a baby is nothing compared to the cost of raising a 12-20 year old! I'd highly recommend getting the book "How to Raise a Healthy Child (in Spite of your Doctor)" (it's not what it sounds like - the title is meant to be somewhat sensational). It is written by a doctor and helps you understand what is typical, and what needs a trip to the doctor.
18 years of growth for that college fund is the only way to go. It helped us raise 180K for our daughter's college education. We spent $100K of that on her education. College was not a surprise for us, we knew that she was going and she graduates debt free in a week. Oh yea, her job is already lined up for Sept 2024!

@@Ilovepalmtrees-cx5ms Mom and dad were able to pay for 1/2 of my private college costs. I made Pizzas to pay for the other half, but it was my choice to go there. My daughter was not going to have to work, but she did through the Co-op program. She got good experience doing it too, and will work at that company in the fall.

@@djmorris5754 No I did not use a 529. I avoided a uniform gift to minors as well. I added it to a brokerage account because I am a Control Enthusiast. I started with blocks of $5000 in the beginning and lowered to $3000 blocks. I went in heavy in the beginning because we needed that growth time. Luckily, she was born in June 2001. Investing started just after 9/11. and that resulted in a 23% dip in my portfolio during Q4 and in 2002, another 24% down. Then, the portfolio rose very well until 2008 were it dropped 38% for the year, but we continued investing and the market returned and continued to grow. All remaining years had growth except 2014 which had no growth and 2018 which had -6%. So the best time to start is before the child turns 1 and all of that money will double twice before graduating high school. I avoided any main investment which went into her name because I did not want it to be a windfall when she turned 18. My main investment was ~43K+time, and then all my spare pocket coins went into her pig which was wrapped and moved to her Dino Savings account when full. I don't know how much the change was but the pig holds about $250 each time its emptied and she went with me to the bank to deposit the wrapped coins.
Definitely used from Facebook marketplace. Many stuff is practically new for less than half the price new. And you can sell it when you are done for what you paid for it.
I thought I knew that having kids was expensive, but I was not prepared. Year 1, wife stops working and income cut in half, while hit with $25000 in medical bills because she was hospitalized for the last month of pregnancy. Thankfully, we intentionally bought a home we could afford on one income, but it was TIGHT. I had to cut all investing for a couple years until my wife resumed working.
So then our income doubles, but now we have 3 kids and childcare is costing about $50k/yr. After my paycheck deductions, the rest is all going to childcare.
I'm finally seeing the light at the end of the tunnel. It's my youngest's last year before K starts, and I think this year is going to run about $15000 in childcare costs, which is more manageable.
For all those young people looking to start a family, don't buy more house than you can afford, because the cost of young kids is crazy.

I really appreciate your honest candor about this topic! My husband and I are still grappling with the kid decision. We are paying off my student loan debt, and I’m the highest earner. Losing my income would be a huge hit and it feels so unpredictable as the mom on what can happen. (Medical bills, having to take bed rest, etc.) when I share that money is a concern, people get aggressive and say you “just make it work.” I hope you comment helps other prospective parents too!

@@cristiannaJ126 I'm a saver and a planner, but it's the only time in my life I've felt desperate. We were living on the edge for a couple years.
The best advice I can give is to accept help if it's available. Historically extended family helped a lot more in raising children, but in modern times the mom and (hopefully) dad shoulder all the burden. Whether it's babysitting, gifts, or cash, if someone offers assistance just say yes!
@@tduck828 Yeah, it's only 4-5 years, but it's difficult. I'm still happy I had kids, and now we are in a good spot financially, but it was very tight for a while.
As a positive, it did force my wife and I to get on a budget and be very intentional with our money, which is something we still do.

2:00 Some of those "necessary" baby items are completely optional, or can be purchased from a thrift store or even gotten from freecycle. We got two cribs when our daughter was born; we never needed them. A "pack & play" was much more practical (and gifted to us second hand, too! : )
Neither of my children slept in their cribs either, lol.
The freaking government needs to increase that dependent care FSA to more than $5000/year. It has been $5k since we've started having kids back in 2012. Ridiculous how that doesn't go up with inflation/rising costs of child care.

I’m single and childfree by choice at 27. I hope I never get put in this situation, but I keep this advice in the back of my mind.
When I was pg I shopped at a Lot of yard sales for baby & toddler clothes in various sizes 9 mos-2T. Shopped on quality & cleanliness rather than gender. My daughter had a lot of overalls for that 1-2 year range which worked perfectly . . Added SS in summer & Ls for winter. Saved new purchases for onesies, sleep ware & a few new outfits. Her brother was able to use some of it a few years later . . But we also GS for him too!
I found that baby really doesn’t have to be expensive, most of it depends on what we buy, where, how much etc. For example, with my first baby I had so much stuff… So many things that were deemed needed and some of them I never used. With my third, I didn’t and still don’t have a stroller, also never had a crib or a high chair, or any of the fancy baby swings and bassinets. Instead of buying regular diapers, a much cheaper alternative is cloth diapering, and no, my water or electric bills did not go up. I got a toddler bed as a gift but they go for like $50 on Amazon. Babies also don’t need any shampoos or moisturizers for a very long time and even then, coconut oil can be used if necessary and it costs $7 for a huge one in Costco. My labor and delivery cost me around $300 total for birth pool and some supplies as I birth at home (which I understand is not for everyone but thanks to this I didn’t spend much). You can get a breastpump for free from insurance or used on Facebook marketplace if no insurance. I could go on and on. I am in no way saying I’m better than anyone - no. I learned after my first baby that really most of the baby things on the market are NOT necessary.
To the ridiculous number of people on here "bragging" about being single and/or not having kids, kids can be a challenge in numerous ways, financially included, but I promise you, you are missing out on the greatest joys and growth available to a human.
Not to mention, it's a bit weird to comment on a video about the expenses of children when it doesn't apply to you? Insecure much?

We bought baby things second hand and kept it pretty minimal. We used cloth diapers and cloth wipes, I made my own baby food from our garden veggies and breastfed. Also we didn’t use any butt cream…. We just changed our babies frequently 🤷♀️. The only major hit to our finances was me going part time.

You can do both an ESA and 529 plan. We (the grandparents) fund the ESAs for the grandchildren. Their parents contribute to 529 plans. Started these for each grandchild as soon as their social security numbers were issued. Better than stuff they will use for just a short time. They do also receive small gifts and lots of time with us doing fun, free activities in our area.
I have 6 kids, and I don't feel like they are expensive at all. I honestly don't understand why people complain about children being expensive, except maybe food. I grew up as the 4th of 8 kids on one teacher's income, and never felt deprived at all, so I guess it is just your perspective.
Is not just perspective if you live in a place where rent is $3000 a month my guess is that you probably leave in an area that is cheaper. You have to understand. It’s not just the person‘s perspective. There are outside factors too well why not just move because they may not be any job positions in other areas that are cheaper for that particular career that you haveis not black-and-white. There’s always an in between.
If you think your kids need their own room, sure. I understand that some places have higher rent. But I don't think that you have to have a lot of space. I know housing costs a lot now, but I would argue that you can bring a baby into the same size apartment that two adults can live in. Babies don't take up much space, and it won't kill a kid to sleep on the couch his entire life. Bedrooms are luxuries, in my opinion.

I love watching these budget and savings videos. My husband and I are DINKS, and we’re glad we made this decision. All of my family members who have children live paycheck to paycheck. I can’t even imagine the stress level of having children, especially in this highly inflated economy.
It’s good you’re DINKs. To us parents and grandparents, our children are our greatest achievements in life. Far more important than money or ‘trappings.’ But you’d have to be a parent to understand. Money is merely a tool, not a destination.
If you find yourself in financial difficulty when you have your baby, ask your hospital if they have a financial assistance program. Moat hospitals actually have to write off a certain amount to charity per year. If you qualify, you can actually get your bill lowered or, as was our case, eliminated completely.
Also, I'd like to lnow where that total cost of birth, prenatal and post partum care came from. My hospital bill (after insurance) was $3,500 alone. That didn't include prenatal or postpartum care.

Yeah, I had twins...thought I was ready.. was not. CHILD CARE IS A JOKE! if you're not extremely poor, there is no help. Child care will change your life along with the kids.
One way to save on diaper cream and even wipes is to wash baby but in sink. I have a 11.5 month old and have not gone through 1 full tube of diaper cream yet. I also probably gone through 3 Costco packages of wipes for when out or no sink available.
People spend on brand new items for babies and kids when they will outgrow pretty quickly and kids don't care for fancy stuff. I have bought used items at Savers and yard sales.
I’m on my third child and having kids was so much cheaper than I thought they would be. People just spend way too much money on crap they grow out of in 6 weeks. Crazy. We max out our HSAs which has been awesome.

The buy nothing groups on Facebook have been a god send for shoes, clothes, and occasionally bigger things like a pack & play. As fast as kids outgrown baby/toddler clothes and shoes make passing those along such a lifesaver.
Wow! The birth $$ is a shocker to me as a Canadian. We had a complicated birth involving surgery for me, specialist for baby followed by helicopter ambulance travel and nicu for a month with a couple more ground ambulance transfers. We spent $150 total!!! For our portion of all ambulance costs. Seriously grateful on many levels for the healthcare arrangements in my country. Uncomplicated birth would have been a zero bill. All including pre and post natal care.
I'm 48, no kids, no dependents. Glad that none of these points that George has listed apply to me except for maybe updating my uncomplicated will, having disability insurance, and continue investing for my personal future after retirement. Life is good.
When our little one was born, she spent a month in Special Care, born Premi. But, we had duel insurance. 100K bill got reduced to $800 out of pocket. We'd also paid off all debt, and saved 20k before she was born. Made every one of these steps, and the 1000 others that came with a new baby, way easier.
BTW. The correct order to watch Star Wars is, Rogue 1, New Hope, Empire, ROTJ, Mandolorian Seasons 1 & 2. That's all you need.
We hadn’t gotten term life insurance for my husband in place yet because we were on the Dave Ramsey baby steps. I was pregnant and we had health insurance but had not gotten term insurance yet. Well he got hit by a city bus. Luckily it was just a knockdown by a new driver And my husband didn’t want to sue since he only had a mild elbow injury, but we called Zander insurance and had a half million dollars policy in place within 48 hours.

Really it’s your first baby that’s more expensive, just because you have to buy all the things they need. For all subsequent kids you can reuse almost all the big items (car seats, cribs, clothes, toys, etc.) unless you’re still using them with the previous kid. I even used the same 20 amazon brand cloth diapers with all three of my kids. You also get a lot of things from baby showers, and anything else you need you can buy second hand.
The only thing I wouldn’t advise buying second hand is a car sear for safety reasons. You don’t know if it’s been in an accident or not unless you know the person you’re buying it from and like bicycle helmets, they’re only meant to take one hit.
After 5 children, I can see babies don’t require much. You live and learn 😊
There appears to be an assumption you are eligible for an HSA. Be aware that not all health care plans qualify for having an HSA
Insurance is really important. You should have that before you got old old.

If you are having a baby, it's better to have a co-pay policy rather than a HDPlan. Not everyone can afford to cash-flow the expenses.
Goodness it's expensive to have a baby in the states! If they're going to make you have the baby they should at least waive the delivery fee. US is so nuts

It depends on your insurance. Mine ranged from $0-$250. I have good insurance.
The loop hole in 7 baby steps - listening to some of the calls, many folks have NO BUSINESS having children with the debt they have, but Ramsey says nothing to advise them otherwise. Go ahead they seem to say when Some simply cannot afford to have children when they do. Having kids should be baby step 3.1 before you go any further if you want to have kids. If you cannot buy a new car that you can sell and return until you are debtfree - why is it okay to keep dropping those babies like skittles??
Too many bad decisions have been done and the conventional living method simply doesnt work anymore. If you really give it a thought then you might believe me on this one. Im not trying to force anybody its just my goal to bring change because even if I succeed for one person it is more worth than any money in this world, isnt it?
I thought with insurance you also have to take into account the deductible? From when we had our kid, i was looking at getting insurance, and with the deductible and monthly cost it was around 3k more than paying it all in cash. So what we did was pay for the delivery and all costs, (12,000) and then we got insruance with the baby added and our monthly insurance was 250$ cheaper. Lol wierd.

It cost me 8000 dollars to have a kid and we had double insurance. I think your numbers are slightly off. Also I had a natural birth so that wasn't even a surgery cost .
Both our babies cost $0 out of pocket with our insurance. His numbers are an average.
My friends who are twins said they made their mom pay for two deliveries even though she just had one c-section. I told them that’s messed up.

Agreed! I just had an emergency c-section. With insurance it’s costing us $10,000. My max-out-of-pocket is $5,000, but the insurance is trying to double bill us!
The baby had jaundice and needed one more night in the hospital under the billilights after I was released. I could have stayed one more night but chose not to because I didn’t want to waste a hospital bed that I didn’t need. Because the baby was released on a different date, the insurance is charging us separately for his entire hospital stay rather than the birth being one event billed under the mother. So they want us to pay max-out-of-pocket for 2 people. I feel like I’m getting scammed.

Wow, I had Kaiser Health insurance and my C-section 28 years ago cost us $10 -- because we checked in after 7pm, or it would have been $5. I kept thinking we were going to get a bill -- but we never did. We were in grad school and we shared baby clothes with other grad parent. It was so cheap. Now that kiddo is 28 -- it's become more expensive _ HAHAHAHAHA!!!! My advice -- get a 529 account for your babes' college tuition!!! We did and it was fabulous!!!

Have children do your best saving prepare for their education, but don’t delay having children too long.
In response to the many commenters here whom put down ever having children only because they’re ‘expensive,’ I say, great that you understand the gravity of the finances, but resist making it your end-all criterion forever. There’s infinitely more to life than money and oneself. To us parents, the moment our first child is born, we realize life isn’t just about us anymore - it’s about our child. And for that matter, a transformed worldview. A world that went from being merely consumable the day before to suddenly worth preserving and improving for someone new. The families we build are our greatest creations, they bring joy, of course sometimes tears, spiritual sustenance, and our deepest life affirmations. They bring out our very best, and even more when that’s still not good enough. As to money, most of us understand money is a critical tool but never a destination unto itself, least of all, ourselves.
If you don’t have $10k to invest in your babies retirement account on or before they’re born and another $10k/yr to invest there you don’t need anything above a $500 ring and a justice of the peace wedding

Yes, the PPO is more expensive but your doctor visits, ER, Urgent Care, etc will be mostly covered.
We’re blessed that our daycare cost was only $80/week. I could imagine spending over $300/week.

Disagree, you do not need buy: crib, bassinet, stroller, clothes, toys , and butt cream you only need if you are not changing diapers often enough which then means that i feel bad for your baby
That is sometimes true, but there’s a lot of factors to consider. When they teethe they tend to get rashes easily. Some kids have sensitive skin and rash easier. Once they are sleeping through the night they have that diaper on a long time every night, it can’t be helped.
HSA being tax free is only partially true. States like CA and NJ you still pay state taxes on your contributions. DUMBEST THING EVER!

Before kids you think you know how expensive it is but you have no idea. Wife and I had our first 2 years ago. Even though we do pretty well financially we still needed a little help from our parents to buy things like stroller, crib, car seat, dresser, etc. We still haven’t used daycare because we can’t afford it. The cost of everything is outrageous.
I can't stress enough that AMS39V is making it 2024. Do you really want to put all trust into random alts and memes which will never work for you because at the moment you heard about them it is already too late and the ones who told ya are laughing about you? The way to change that is understanding how AMS39V works and what that does

It costs over $300k to raise 1 child to the age of 18 on average yet I see so many families with multiple children but complain they have no money…🤦♂️
And I see people with many children not complaining and having a great life on less than a lot of childless people. My parents raised 8 kids on one teacher's salary, and it was wonderful!

I have to call BS on that number. It makes assumptions like saying that your decision to buy a three bedroom home was purely because of the kids. I bought a 3 bedroom home when I was single because it’s the most marketable size, not because I had kids!
Also, that number apportions a full share of the utilities and other costs to the child, but the A/C would cost the same to run with one person or five in the home!
