I like that formulation of beauty is admired at a distance, truth is integrated, and goodness calls us to it. Ultimately, all three are aspects of God who is Love. So the more pure a form of one, the more it joins with the others.
The seeming subjectivity of beauty can largely be explained by reference to the mystical body of Christ. Because we are made to serve different functions in cooperation within the Lord's design, and also that we are made for loving relationships in which we reveal the Lord's holiness to each other, it is logical that we appreciate God by different ways and for different aspects. It is only together in unison that the whole of beauty begins to be perceived.

Beauty may not speak to science but she does lead it by the hand.

Not a scientist, but I've heard that if there are several theories for explaining a phenomenon that the beautiful one is usually correct. In a college biology lecture I was presented the theory of photosynthesis. Took me a bit of studying but once I got it I realized it was one of the most elegant things I ever encountered.

I tend to live as a thought machine far to much. Imagination and play are necessary. Allowing beauty to break into the day takes a real effort. Loved how contemplative prayer was likened in the need to work to seek the goal.

    Thank you for presentation.
I am part of the Geek Squad .
During the Time Of The 😷 l had Tim to 📚.
    First was TLOR.
Then Russia literature. Dostoevsky's three great novels were just part of the quest.
I will not list all the authors.
One can see the journey of the 18th and 19th centuries for truth and beauty.
The denial of redemptive beauty seemed to plant the seeds. The seeds were the social /political history to come.
Art is so commutative to the soul. The soul is eternal.

Thank you Fathers. Very informative! Beauty in the eye of the beholder. Father Pine “get out of your head and into your body” I really needed to hear that today. Love Godsplaining. Please consider me for the Camino. It would be such a blessing to do the Camino with you. I have my application in I will be 73 at the time but I can do this. Thank you Fathers. Funny enough, I'm listening to this podcast as I practice piano. Can it be true that beauty is even more beautiful for the artist or performer himself? I not only hear the notes and melodies of the song I am playing, but I also experience the pleasure of plucking the keys myself and change tempo, volume, etc. wherever I feel it is more beautiful. I have heard this same song many times (and I'm not the best pianist), but I feel more pleasure playing it than listening to it. The same could be said about a writer, does he experience an excess of beauty by writing a beautiful poem, or a painter, by brushing strokes on a canvas?

I sing in a pretty accomplished church choir. I can't imagine anyone listening could more appreciate some of the ancient and inspiring music anymore than those singing it. Curiously though to really communicate the music well, some distance is needed to allow for a skilled rendering, while still 'feeling' it, i.e, feeling it without being overwhelmed. Whereas the listener has every right to be overwhelmed,. So perhaps they may appreciate it at times more than the creator, performer.

Beauty is waaay more objective than people like to admit. Just like God, I guess....

Yeah, the golden ratio in paintings, drawings, sculptures, photographs and images shows an objective foundation. I don’t think we’ve identified all of the other quantifiable ratios/methods out there yet. Portions, integrity and splendor …good start.

Beauty seems to be a very human concept. When I took my dog for w walk in the evenings I would sometimes be shocked to my core by the beauty of a sunset over tje fields. Lovely as my dog was she wouldn't get it. Often wonder what Athiests do when confronted with beauty. Who do they thank?

they may not be able to see it. The embrace of atheism is a sin. Sin blinds.

Excellent discussion...but how can you discuss beauty without visual examples, particularly of art. Even two pieces would be helpful. To that end if the discussion could have been helpful to art.
