ABOUT 60 Minutes Australia
For over forty years, 60 Minutes Australia have been telling Australians the world’s greatest stories. Tales that changed history, our nation and our lives. Reporters Liz Hayes, Tom Steinfort, Tara Brown, Nick McKenzie and Amelia Adams look past the headlines because there is always a bigger picture. Sundays are for 60 Minutes Australia.
#60MinutesAustralia
Well done 60 Minutes for finally listening to viewers and clearly labelling archive footage.👏🏆
Now there's a genuine Christmas miracle for ya!
If only they would put the year date of air in the title
It would be nice if 60 minutes would do an update on all of these videos from the archives.
Exactly. Like the Condamine River in Queensland was bubbling for years, they covered it back then. This has been going on for years in Australia.
It’s not that he ‘doesn’t know’, it’s that he doesn’t care. It’s happening to someone else, not him and that’s ok.
Mining companies dont need your permission to sink a well on your property, Im glad they never found gas on my property. But they sunk wells on properties close to me . Funny thing is, Mining companies are allowed to clear land that farmers arnt allowed to touch and would face huge fines if they did.
and the land they clear gets contaminated and nothing will grow there for years.
The land owners should be entitled to rent, they dont own the mineral rights but they own the property... charge them for using the space.
Something similar happend in Germany. Not because of Gas but Coal. They removed complet Villages becaue there was coal underneath it. And they dug up a few Villages over the years. All the Villages tried to defend themself agains it (by suing the coal companies) but lost in the end.
Imagine that, a lying, greedy politician with no regard for his constituents. Just like here in the U.S.
It's about time all Australians stand up to our government
For allowing this to happen 😢
Dream on mate, She'll be right, crack another beer 🍺 attitude.....
Non compliance is a better way.
I’ve got a feeling most people don’t care. As long as nothing stands in their way of life.
Hold the politicians accountable. Sue them for the damage. Collectively and individually. Legislators as ignorant as that man are being negligent.
Our courts are corrupt as well
@@matthansberry5795
But the courts only interpret and enforce. They have to work with the legislature. 🥲
This was always going to happen, the stupidity of governments allowing it to happen is a disgrace in a country that doesnt have enough water.
Big Gas, Big Oil, Big Coal, Big Copper... the list goes on a ways. What do the have in common? They're the constituents our Politician's really represent.
Corporations control everything
The Australian government is registered in the US, and illegal under the Australian constitution. They are not your politicians.
they're NOT your politicians, they are corporate employees serving their oligarch masters
You can really tell a colonial country by the power of its government over citizens. I am surprised at Australian people don't rise up about this.
As long as there's beer in the fridge and footy on the telly, Australia will not rise up to any tyranny.
What are you talking about?? 😂😂😂
@@rmf9567 The resemblance to what has happened in other British colonies (I live in one of them) when it comes to natural resources, making money, and the safety and wishes of the environment and people. That is what I am talking about.
@@susanharris5926 I'm sorry but I just do not understand how you can say that... What about Americans.. does the government have some kind of power over them
@@joshstafford4410 Not weak too bloody spoilt, makes me sick
This was 2010, and it was going to be a boom for employment. Today in Victoria, they are banning gas in new homes, so we're is the gas going?
Why are they manufacturing a crisis? Why are we as people becoming poorer intentionally ?
So that the "Big Cats" get more wealthy. Obviously the Government Don't care, as long as they have the Gas to sell overseas.
Gas should be banned in new homes, that doesn’t mean old homes and industry don’t require the gas from these wells.
This guy clearly does not have a clue of what he talking about. It’s all about greed.
Sold down the river, wait till there no drinking water
Anyone who thinks we live in a democracy is dead wrong , governments can and do whatever they want. Regardless of the will of the people.
The sad fact is, people want gas no matter how they get it. Gas needs to be extracted because no one wants to change their way of life.
The australian government just prostitutes itself out to the highest bidder😂😂
So much for “owning” your land.. do they pay for it? No. Pay the taxes? No. You pay all that. They just take what they want.
In texas the land owner owns the mineral rights not the government. Australia laws are dumb as hell.
@@barryraymond9004 it's like Texas... back in the late 18th century... but without guns...
You don't own the mineral rights.
However I assume you have just as much opportunity to apply for the mineral rights as the gas company.
@@0Aus What does apply mean? The apply to buy them from the government?
@@barryraymond9004 Apply, register an application seeking claim.
That is the process mining/gas companies go through. 🤷♂️ why can't an individual land owner?
IF again I assume, if you the land owner had the rights they can't frack.
Hmm, send the company a huge bill! Monthly!
if there land smells like gas how safe is it living there??
the land smells like the bush, its beautiful here.... and perfectly safe!
Should have been obvious when a politician waved coal around in parliament.
Time to get rid of the government
Yeah, because anarchy is SO much better. Or something.
As a tax paying citizen I am out raged that these huge companies don't pay there fair share of tax it's the average John and bill that pay the majority of income tax and my sergestion to these farmers is to put a toll booth at the gate and charge hundreds of dollars entry they own the road and access ,the mines may have the right to drill the bores but you can charge access
The Australian government is registered in the US, and illegal under the Australian constitution
no you cant. they have right of access to their "claims"
You can try, but I bet the Government will just make some excuse and kick you off the land that THEY want.
I’m sure it would be just as awful for those living “halfway across the world in some Tin-pot dictatorships” too Liz…
Wow...
Fracking is not a good thing
They can have the resources .
Land owners need to organize as a business selling.
Cut into there profits and charge them exorbitantly with leases that expire and they must renegotiate and renew every year
Funny it is still happening here in the US in Susquehanna County PA. Some people are lucky enough to get water delivered, others get by running water and a few have sold out.
This is why my wife, myself and my 3 kids moved away from this area years ago when the coal seam gas wells were just beginning. The whole area is a toxic wastelands, all the rivers and creeks are contaminated the bore water is contaminated, just a horrible place to be in. Tara, chinchilla, the gums, weambillia, hopelands,Kogan,Condamine, miles, and many other towns are heavily contaminated. What was once a safe place for people to live in is now a health hazard.
Wait until AU has no fresh water, the corrupt politicians children will not have fresh water either, and this will all happen world wide eventually because all water connects somewhere way into the Earth. Just a matter of time.
Thats just complete bullsh(t! You dont live here so how would you know!
@@i2iFX_Colleen typical aussie response......did you take the vax as well? a sheep of the government.....streuth
Stealing from the citizens, crazy
Amazing how it takes a local incident to attract attention. Australia has been exploiting Africa for years in the same way....
Australia you are fools if you allow this to continue
what effect does allowing foreign countries taking our resources on mass, and selling it cheaply to their, and other countries, have on our waterways, and climate. it is not only pollution that is affecting our climate, look more closely at the effect of taking vast amounts of gas, and minerals/natural resources.
This is beyond evil.
Government monopolies all over the world are the same. Much of the governments income comes from the taxes they collect.
Politicians are motivated by self interest. The downside of democracy.
Easy solution. Find someone of great integrity who suffered because of this policy, form a political party to change the laws, and motivate the voters to put him or her into office. Then change the laws and make those companies liable to restore the properties that are damaged.
Any politician who opposes the plan, vote them out.
Like the "wild,wild west"😮
You can see there not doing it right.. What a mess.. I worked in oil and gas and they did a horrible job.. The government must put together a service rid, wire line truck, oil field cement pumper, And the truck to move the operation to abandon everyone of the wells. I know what it takes to abandon them and they look danger zone of H2S there. This is bad real bad.. them wells could blow out.. That real bad old well old casing.. A disasters just waiting to happen..
Everyone buying property there can read the purchase deed where it says THEY DON'T GET MINERAL RIGHTS! This means the owners of the mineral rights can come and mine, drill, excavate, etc. to get the minerals. In the USA there are certain rules the miners must follow but the surface land owner has very little say in the overall picture. Usually, enough money is involved to shut up all but the most greedy land owners.
I hope people wake up. And it will be taken seriously.
Australia rolled over and accepted their fate when the firearms were taken.
Not really.
Mostly guns empower those that are weak and pathetic and lacking the ability to speak/communicate before resorting to pulling triggers.
Don't need more than 2 brain cells to use a gun/firearm, yet you need more than 2 to talk yourself out of a corner/situation.
But there are more than enough people already that think their guns are Gods given right, or, think god is in their hand or lives in said gun.
That being said, it's not hard to get illegal/unregistered guns/firearms in Australia. Just need cash and to know who to ask.
Also, a pissed-off out-back Aussie, isn't someone you want to cross. He doesn't need a gun to do you in and hiding remains is a fairly trivial matter in most rural areas of Australia.
In America if it’s your land it’s your gas!
Colonialism at it's finest.
Ive seen that avoidance of questions, wonder how much his silence is worth?
Unbelievable....signs of things to come
This seems extrodinarily illegal. I am sure this is having in the USA too.
No it is not😂😂😂
Greed IS universal...
Most of the US underground water supplies are already contaminated from fracking and mining
Unbelievable!!!!
Already happened in America. Watch The Gas Lands
Keep fighting. It's estimated 70% of waterways & ground water are polluted. And 45% of our tap water is unsafe with PFAS.
Canberra has the best tap water and it’s no surprise. Tassie too
Dont feel bad, i live in alberta canada, and the oil companies have turned it into a pin cushion with all the wells drilled.
That’s worldwide the same procedure!!! Nothing new actually.
USA had people saying fracking put gas into water wells. Maybe it did, but many wells were releasing gas long before the wells were fracked.
By the way, oil and gas wells can be drilled at angles. There is no need to put the extraction equipment close to anyone’s home.
The Australian laws on mineral resources apply in UK. Over here it even applies to underground water. The British are not even allowed to drill their own water well. Many farmers do, but it’s technically illegal.
Silly to think anyone OWNS land.
Too much fracking
🚨PLEASE do updates with the stories/videos you post & report on.🚨
They won't. 60 minutes is more of a talking piece. They are merely a hype train trying to get views.
Sometimes they've done good, but most of the time it's all talk and then moving onto the next Big Story.
If politicians want to do this then we should not only hold them responsible but their children can be responsible as well since we will only find the negative effects in a decade or two

Australians can't purchase mineral and water rights on their land?
It seems as if these folks have caught on to the anything for the almighty buck. And to hell with anything else. Shame on you, shame on us.
This is just wrong.
The only thing that any company or company man thinks about is...WEALTH.
That is what I always hear when these clowns do this somewhere without the concern for the people that they tread on . They aren't making wealth for the common man or the land owners. They're making it for THEMSELVES
Really depends on how the mineral rights are doled out in Australia. It sounds like the government has effectively taken the mineral rights without compensation to the private surface rights owners.
Lol yall are living in a country just like that and can't even tell 😂😂
ive seen the same thing in Alberta Canada- residents well in a rural community south of Calgary would set alight if you put a match to it!
OMG
THIS IS UNBELIEVABLE.... AND SAD......
The rich cheating the poor
Fracking is presently banned here in the UK.
15 years on and who would've thought...more CSG mines then you can poke a stick at, sky high gas prices and a +80% export rate. How surprising.
Well this has only been going on for the last thirty years! but glad to see something is finally happening!
In the USA that is pretty much the same thing can be done.
If the oil company wanted to drill an oil well right up against your house they can.
in AU you dont have mineral rights to your property below? and air rights above? I dont understand how you dont..here in the US we do..can someone please explain why property owners dont have mineral rights..thanks

Thanku,I've been censored/ blocked at times ALSO and I've never bullied, spewed hateful crap. The people paid to watch for buzz words don't like you. In fact, my print just went black now. 😬 Oops.
Any law that excludes owning the mineral and water rights from going with the sale of land is a very bad law . If you don't own the mineral water rights under your house, you don't own the house .
Still happening 😢
This happened in Silt Colorado as well
and you gave away your guns.
The loyalties belong to the land owners!!! Government cannot sign off contracts over gas under private properties!!! In Australia, apparently, people of government lost their mind.
two things in common...mining companies and corrupt politicians pissing in each others pockets !!!
If the gas is getting mixed in with the water table in the ground it could be deadly if it ends up in the home
It doesn't appear to be that big of a deal!!!! if they let it keep happening. I would argue that any gas to be found on the property is owned by those who own the property and that should give you any right to defend it. However, if you are leasing from the Crown..... well then that is just that. You don't "own" property in Australia. The Constitution says "Governments can resume Land on 'Just Terms'. The Land ownership/Lease (deed and title) laws in Australia are insane. It needs fixing and the people need to initiate that before it's too late.
This day and age it sadly isn’t a surprise. Sorry to hear this Australians, your being run over.
The government guy looks like every supervillain in kids movies
Destroy Destroy I'm pissed the progress and theivery of once a beautiful place ,
greed is evil
Very interesting but why not give an update, so what actually happened and whats it like now 13 years later?
they won't want to because all their scare mongering proved to not be true . Saying that I do believe that a farmer or property owner should have the right to say no to wells on their land . I worked on pressure testing some gas lines in that area in 2012-13 . I drove through there in 2023 , it was not a waste land , far from it .
Suspected as much, cheers@@derekgodfrey5
I wonder if the landowners receive any of the income generated by the gas companies? Who owns them?
I'm curious what the situation looks like today in almost 2024???
This the first video I’ve seen were I can see comments
What part of Fracturing don't Australians understand?
Outrageous! Only farmers are allowed to destroy the land...
Damn sad you don’t even own your property 😡😡😡😡😡🐍
It’s a payment for the rent of the land government has the last say.
HOW CAN THEY ROB U LIKE THIS
Who is the government in Australia now?right or left?
Wings of the same bird
How ironic. People coming onto your land against your will and doing what they please. Sound familiar?
A few acres you just said they had 8000 acres!!!!
They own the property, they own the gas!
Sounds like a dictatorship. Wouldn't want to live there.
WTH has happened to Australia?????
Unbridled Capitalism folks, it's difficult to see it getting any better.
I hade all the politics we not were to leave . Please all Ausralias put WHITE PAPER ON THE VOTE 100/100 AFTER THEY SEEN WHATS WANT HAPPENING 🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺
