A tap uses typically 1-3 gallons per minute. A 1/3 pound burger uses 660 gallons. This means a burger could use as much water as a tap running for 11 hours. The biggest water consumption is not what you see and use, but what you can't see
I feel that instead of recommended, RUclips should put it as an ad in as many videos as possible.... Then at least people will have to watch at least 20 seconds of this...
I’d rather stay ignorant as sad as it is there’s obviously nothing we can do about so I’d rather stay oblivious than live in fear till our inevitable deaths
@@wsiak340 Well said. Giving up our extremely high standard of living goes against our myopia, our narcissistic attitudes, even against Darwinian science. Change, in these matters, isn't realized by the populous because of its extremely high price. We aren't going to solve climate change, biodiversity loss, or fresh water consumption through expanding our demands on nature. Nature was never meant to sustain a population of a massive species as large as ours. Dominance and wealth have their limits.
@@MG-ik3wy the thing is, we might not even have to change our lifestyles. By making water more expensive the normal population will have to pay let's say 10$ more a month, but the corporations and industries have Millions/ billions of costs. That is a huge drive for them to start innovating and decrease their water costs by e.G not planting crops in a desert. Depending on the product cost may slightly increase, but maybe don't increase whatsoever.
I live in Cape Town, and yes the water crisis was scary. However that was about 3 years ago after the area suffered a huge drought over years. Rain came again in late 2018 and now everything is back to normal. We never actually reached day 0 but we were close.
I'm from Cape Town too and I don't think we should underplay how much of an issue this is. We had to do a lot to avoid Day Zero, and even then we were very close. As our population and demand increases, it will get harder and harder to avoid Day Zero. We live in a fundamentally arid area and the fact that we don't talk about water security now that every thing is 'normal' again is worrying.
Here in Canada, though we have an abundant supply of water, the government still pushes to use water saving devices that would help conserve water. I hope that would be the approach worldwide regardless.
@@AjaySharma-le3df yeah and on the other hand, government in countries like india is busy is in diverting people's mind in politics and other religious matters which barely matters and whole mainstream media is busy in only showing that topics in which "MODI" govt looks good and never talk about other relevant stuffs... India overpopulation, inequality and current corrupt govt. Will never be able to help india is anyway to save india's water..
And even then, it's still not being "conservative" with our critical resources, either. I refuse to buy Nestle or any other bottled water from stores due to their abuse of water permits across the globe. Consumers may have adapted to low flow toilets and washers and shower heads, but they still insist on having a green lawn around their in-ground swimming pools for when they come back from their country club tee time. There's algae blooms that occur every year across the Great Lakes, making the shoreline uninhabitable and decreasing the oxygen levels for fish and aquatic life, and the expensive clean up of those blooms keeps getting put off. It frightens me that people are so cavalier with their water consumption, knowing how unstable it could become in just a matter of decades. We waste A LOT, and we aren't too concerned with water quality either, because once we've sent something down the drain, it's "not our problem" anymore. Canada has a shoddy track record of preserving clean, fresh water when it conflicts with industrial production (see pulp mills in Grassy Narrows or Dryden ON, and the run-off from drilling and mining companies in Novas Scotia, Alberta, the Yukon, and NWT). Setting a price on water usage is only a small step. Trying to convince businesses that they need to take water waste management into greater consideration as part of a moral/ethical issue is more important. They seldom have much, if any, respect for the local communities that live nearby, and you're completely invisible to them if you live on a reserve. Access to safe, clean water is a right, not a privilege, and anyone who threatens that right should be charged. We Canadians don't know how good we've got it, until the rest of the world comes banging on our door for fresh water.
Wow!!!! This is high quantity education. I am being entertained while I am learning! I much rather this than having a lecturing professor bore my attention away! The people who created this video have a deep understanding of the subject and award worthy talent for communicating with the human mind. Thank you Netflix. I can definitely say I learn on Netflix, not just unwind. People won't believe me, but I can prove it! You guys have my profound gratitude!
I read somewhere in my childhood that one drop of water is equal to one drop of your blood from your body. It moved me and I always try to conserve water in whatever I do. I hope people reading this comment also follow this in their life's. Even a drop from a tap bothers me.
It's wonderful to see that Netflix is making educational videos like this one on such a fundamental topic such as water scarcity. Hopefully, more people see this and change their behavior around water. As a Capetonian, I was relived when rain started pouring again, but we still need to do a lot to conserve water and avoid another disaster
@@camerontaylor7471 Exactly! In some neighborhoods, they don’t allow you to hang your clothes out to dry, plant your own food, compost, or collect rain water. Not even in your own back yard. The slavery is real!!
Same here in India still remember clearly At my school and at sikh temple close my house they use to have big collection barrels but they all gone or dried up now there are 10 r more of houses new generation didt even know what my village use to look like Basically whole village were surrounded by water With time everything changed so quickly
We're all going to ignore this the same way we ignored the prediction of a viral pandemic, and when its too late we'll just come up with a conspiracy theorey to make ourselves feel better.
People are not ignoring, but we are also not to blame. Industry and Agriculture account for 80% of water use, yet citizens are the ones who have to save water consumption? Do these mayors/politicians understand math? Even if people save 50% of their water consumption, it's a drop in an ocean. Industry and Agriculture need more regulation on how they use their water.
@@hugovale6360yeah you're right, but as citizens we need to pressure those in power to take notice and bring reforms which can help conserve water across various sectors of the economy.
I’ve worked in Water Supply Management for the last 20 years, with a focus on reducing leakage which is mentioned in this video as a major part of this challenge. The messaging here that governments and society need to value water more is spot on. I would argue that it’s not a willingness to pay issue for most people, but an unwillingness to charge that is central to this problem, as politicians are always looking short term to ensure they get re-elected, and tariff increases are considered vote losing decisions. Think how much your water bill is compared to your cellphone bill for example, or even your subscription to Netflix!
Here in Australia, the daily rate is definitely more expensive than Netflix. Most Australians would live through at least one water restriction by the time they're 10 years' old and I dare say our older generations are more water-conscious than most people in the world because we live in a dry country where, in a continent 3/4 the size of USA, there are less than 10 major rivers.
Jules Verne you’re right that Australians have lived through a lot more water restrictions than most and also pay more than most so my point is somewhat inaccurate. To satisfy my thirst for knowledge I just did some quick research / maths: Average cost of water is around $2-4/1000 litres in Australia and consumption is somewhere around 200l/person per day. That means the average daily cost of water is around 20c / person / day. Over a 30 day month for a household of 4 people that’s $24/month. Seems you can get Netflix for less, but it also costs a lot less to get Netflix on your devices than it does to extract, treat and pump water to come out of the tap in every house 24/7.
Yaxley exactly! The problem is and always will be ‘the system’ ... people don’t realize that our entire capitalist economy, all of our laws and governments, everything that makes up our lives in civilization is designed to protect the wealthy, while covertly distracting and controlling the poor, to prevent the poor(even the middle class)from raiding into the mansions and private property of the elite, and steeling their ‘wealth’ that was given to them by US... and it is also designed to motivate the poor, working, middle class into acting out and participating in their role of ‘the system’ ... people don’t realize we live in a hierarchy... there has to be someone at the bottom, and ‘the system’ is designed to get the ones at the bottom to celebrate their enslavement... to fight for their own oppression...
Water Tax should be tied to income or every house should be allotted a water meter to fix their water usage if they pass that limit impose a heavy fine when done without permission.
I really appreciate you sharing this video for my Marine Biology high school students to reflect on. It made them more aware of the value of conserving water and what they can do to prevent Day Zero from happening in the future.
Destruction is simply our nature. When our existence is threatened, we change. We adapt. We do something about it. That is the sad reality of our intelligence.
I think it goes beyond that. Any animal would love to eliminate all the threats (predators) to their ability (life) to use energy (food). Humans have done it so much to the point that we are exhausting all of our resources. Exponential growth y’all

I am a Masters in Power Engineering Student at the Technical University of Munich and for my master's thesis, I completed research identifying solutions for water scarcity for five cities in the world, Cape Town, Singapore, Dubai, Karachi, Los Angeles which are critically affected with water turmoil. I use energy modelling to identify the cost-effective solutions for each city including conventional and renewable power sources for water desalination and other measures such as drip farming and rainwater harvesting methods to find sustainable water usage for future. I am very happy to discuss my results and be a part of the discussion on this critical topic today before it gets too late.
My MPlan Dissertation Was on this topic but context is different .... i wasnt able to continue it to my thesis. And my guide wasnt so sure about brining in Desalination into the proposals but then contextually it wasnt essential as its not financially feasible..... The study took me through an interesting process but there wasnt enough time so unfortunate.
Watching Lake Mead & Lake Powell almost bottom out is a frightening experience in the western United States of America. Yet everywhere you go hundreds of new houses are being built and no one even mentions conservation of water as a prime directive.....
Delhi government's water scheme seems like one of the better policies, where limited amount of water is given for free/subsidized rate per household, and if they go over the limit, they pay market rate for the full amount of water used (i.e. no subsidies for them)
In India we need to come up with lots of lakes and artificial water conservation techniques as it were used in ancient times. Like how we have reserved forest and they are to be protected no matter what, we need to have atleast one big lake or so protected in every city, state and villages of India. We have enough land for that and barring a few places India received decent amount of rain all across. I saw how people in Bangalore saw a survey which predicted it would run out of its drinking water supply by 2 decades or so and people started volunteering to claim their lakes as Bangalore was known as "The city of lakes". The point I am making is we cannot only depend on the govt to do everything as we all know governments looks for short term benefits.
After watching this video, it really does open your mind up to important arising issues that need to be addressed. It’s time we act! Better to be proactive not reactive
This is so important to me. I am from Jamaica 🇯🇲 and where I currently live running water comes in pipe tops once a month. We of to catch the water and if we run out before it returns the next month we of to purchase. And most communities here in Jamaica is going through the same thing.
Level of knowledge and awareness in 18 minutes. Great work guys. God bless you. Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) taught 1400 years ago to control the use of water even during wudu (ablution) or shower.
I can’t believe my parents make me feel bad for not wanting to have children when we don’t even have enough water for the people already on this planet
So much true, people think that if you are not perpetuating your genes you are useless on earth but this global thinking is just selfish and rudimentary
We do though, we are more than capable of using desalination to sustain our population. Israel and Saudi Arabia are proof of that. Most of us don't use desalination because it's expensive but if we were to ever run out of other sources of drinking water we would switch to desalination and other modern methods of extracting drinking water. If you don't want to have kids that's your choice but don't blame on it declining drinking water.
@@angryfinn7737 It doesn't cost too much energy, 55% of Israel's water comes from desalination and it only accounts for 4-5٪ of Israel's energy consumption. And if we used nuclear energy like France we wouldn't have to worry about energy at all. The world could solve all of its energy and water problems if countries adopted the energy policy of France and water policy of Israel.

I read somedays back that India exports 10 trillion litre of water when it exports million tonnes of Basmati rice. 1kg of rice requires around 5000kg of water. That's why there is thinking that in future millets will be mainstream crop. It requires around 1500kg of water to produce 1kg of Millets and is super healthy grain. Also can grow in much extreme conditions and is less susceptible to climate change. Millet will be future crop.
@chanel kim I think in coming decades we won't have much choice. Water intensive crops will become expensive and people will have to reduce consumption of such crops.
Nothing requires as much water as meat. By far. The only thing that really can make difference is to refrain from eating animal products. If people will not do it, the real crisis will come sooner than we all can imagine.
@J O R D A N Agreed. Good thing is that both Indias and Bangladesh fertility rate has reached 2.1 meaning population is going to stabilize and reduce in coming years.
Have you been to South America? Lots of restaurants with high meat diets are becoming popular in particular KFC and McDonald's which I have no idea what herbs and spices or fries demand such adoration and consumption. The Amazon rainforest is being destroyed so we have more cattle meat to feed the Brazilian and global population.
Question - What about reclaimed wastewater use for crop irrigation in agriculture which uses 70% of the fresh water sources? I know it stands at a few percent only today, but it is a viable option at least to push back this 30-40 year deadline, or also too expensive?
This is also happening RIGHT NOW in Holland. Because of climate change, we now have periods of excess water and periods of sever drought instead of year round normal rainfall.

Not competitive everywhere, but in my region it is cheaper than diverting and treating river water.

Agriculture and industry uses 92% of the water but still most of the video was on the individuals. I like to see more push for government and businesses to do more to streamline their water use. The individual can only do so much. We need better regulations and solutions on how to use water more efficiently and penalties for wasting water.
Red Meat agriculture really is the mother of all resource intensive things humans cultivate, it is responsible for most land use, carbon/methane pollution, water use and im sure there are many more. I haven't really heard that much about chicken in any of these kinds of videos, I dont mind cutting down on red meat consumption at all, chicken is just as good if not better.
Chicken be as good. I couldnt believe how much water is used for 1 burger. I think elon musk should start some new projects so be able to treat ocean water to drinking standards and replicate animal DNA so we can make meat in labs just as good as the real thing without any use of water and no carbon emissions. Also clean energy to make them both a success. These things are not impossible, it should be the new aim instead of space exploration, although that is important to preserve human life.
Its actually not, the documentary doesn't really elaborate very well on it. It has its share of problems, but its much more restorative than crop agriculture
I think one has to look at the entire interconnected system and its components such as water infrastructure, climate change, technologies deployed in agricultural and hydrogenation, environmental impact, industrialization, water and air pollution, conservation, diversified regenarative agriculture/foreststion etc!

Thank you for the update. Hope everyone stays safe.

Flint ain't even got clean water to begin with. The problem is greed.

Delhi government's water scheme seems like one of the better policies,
where limited amount of water is given for free/subsidized rate per household, and if they go over the limit, they pay market rate for the full amount of water used (i.e. no subsidies for them)
Yes indeed. Other states should follow it.
Household uses only 8% of water rest all are industry and agriculture there should be a way to tackle that. Household should be priced minimum

We do though, we are more than capable of using desalination to sustain our population. Israel and Saudi Arabia are proof of that. Most of us don't use desalination because it's expensive but if we were to ever run out of other sources of drinking water we would switch to desalination and other modern methods of extracting drinking water. No, he wasn't. Overpopulation isn't an issue (and if trends of slowing growth continue, it will never be). The problem is over-consumption.

Cuz Netflix and Vox are American companies...dont like it? no one's forcing you to watch it. Or you and your country can create your own media company. Simple
@@ladhkay Netflix is international. There's a reason why it's popular.
@@ladhkay its the US that should get inline with the rest of the world, talking gallons and inches like you are on some other planet.
in this documentary for example, people throughout the world speak in liters but when you get to the Americans they start using their own unit.
The largest cities have always been coastal cities, and mine have been using sea water for flushing toilets since forever. There you go, 3 gallons saved.
Meanwhile Israel and Singapore have advanced desalination technology far enough that it is competitive with ordinary means of water supply. Not competitive everywhere, but in my region it is cheaper than diverting and treating river water.
I live on North America's eastern seaboard. Why aren't we using salt water to flush? Does the water then go out to sea or is it treated and reused? I will have to look up more on this topic.
Thank you! I was watching this and reading the comments and couldn't understand why no one was bringing up desalinization. This is a fairly simple and very inexpensive process in most areas, so much so that any of the :water stressed" areas that are along a coast will not actually have the issues described in this documentry.
To be honest, I am very glad that I was born in the Dominican Republic. The culture, people, and wide-spread poverty really humble many people. I have learned to conserve water since I was born. Even as I live here in Pennsylvania, I make sure to watch my water usage even though it is included in the rent.
I had a housemate who would routinely take 20 minute hot showers because (as he explained) the utilities were included in the rent. What made his actions particularly troubling was the fact that he was majoring in environmental studies!
Now, I don't regret my decision of being an Environmental and Sanitary Engineer💚

When Cape Town was reeling under water scarcity, it rained that shows that nature has solutions for every problem.
Rain water harvesting is one such method which will help
1. Recharge ground water
2. Supply our daily need
3. Avoid cities being flooded
4. Not allow the sea to rise
5. Last but not the least check land subsidence.

Agriculture and industry uses 92% of the water but still most of the video was on the individuals. I like to see more push for government and businesses to do more to streamline their water use. The individual can only do so much. We need better regulations and solutions on how to use water more efficiently and penalties for wasting water.
this is excessively amazing video. it is really usefull for me. thank you soo mach. i promise i will keep water. water is gold
Great documentary. I used it today in my Macroeconomics course.
Small correction tho: the Colorado River does not supply Denver with water. It flows west, from the divide, about an hour's drive from Denver.
