Thank god the music is still just as headpopping as the first game was. That was honestly all I wanted while everything is a big improvement with exception of no English Dub(although that could a small blessing since people are way more vocal about dubs) and mouth flapping. I will most likely not get this one but I can say that it is a big improvement over the first game so nice review Alex! Also I played the Voice of cards demo and I had fun.....until I realized that Yoko Taro is the writer. You can guess I am SUPER suspicious now but again soild review!
Yoko Taro wrote it...oh god what did he do this time?! Don't get me wrong, I love his drunken ramblings, but he just loves to gutpunch you right in the feels.
I've already finished the game but I'm still hungry for Caligula content so here I am lmao. Really good review, good to people who wants to play the game but is still uncertain about it due to its predecessor. Just a little correction, the musicians songs have 4 versions each one: instrumental, regret version, X version and remix version (this one plays when you fight the musician in cuestion).
@@yaoi4evandnevayuri 40 hours more less the main story with 3 group quests made (but only one completed). I'm not sure I can be trusted, since I spend some time only listening the songs over again.
@@BacklogBattle even when my wallets suffer a bit every time, I already have my "Alex' corner" of videogames and I have enjoyed every single recommendation you've given us here (from Zanki Zero onwards). You rock, mate!
They made the dungeons suck less? That´s exactly what I wanted. The things that I loved most about the first game, the combat and the music, are still great and my biggest complaint has been addressed. I guess there is something I want in October after all.
I still have the first game in my backlog and I want to play it eventually. The music and combat are what I’m most excited for. Glad to see the sequel improves on the first one.
This looks really cool! I’d only barely even heard of the first game and I had no idea a sequel was coming, so I appreciate this review. I’m so glad you think this is a good jumping-on point, so I think I’m going to start here, and then if I like it enough, I can come back to the original later.
Good to know you don't need to play the first to enjoy this. Really liking the games you are covering it's like everything you are reviewing is right up my alley 😍
I actually managed to snag a pre-order for a physical copy just yesterday, and I am so looking forward to it. I haven't gotten a chance to play the first one yet (holding out for a reasonably priced physical copy) so I'm happy to know I'll be available to dive straight in as a newcomer
Thanks for the review :) I have debated a long time whether to get into the original, but I guess I will try this one first and wait for a deep sale for the original since they aren’t that much connected.
Thank you for answering the biggest questions I had about this sequel, namely, "did they polish it a little more than the last one" and "are the dungeons actually engaging or am i just running around arbitrary environments" I've been on the fence about Caligula Effect 2 because Overdose, while engaging in its narrative, honestly lost me once I hit the third dungeon's boss or so. The combat to me is a bit tedious, and the sfx during combat in Overdose were....uncomfortable. What made me stop playing, however, was being able to steamroll through almost every encounter until a boss, when all of a sudden I'd get curb-stomped, then I'd have to go grind up levels in the dungeon until I was capable of killing the boss. Honestly your description of the battle system makes me think that I might just be bad at using the imaginary chain. I think I'm gonna take the plunge on CE2, though. Regret and X seem to have stunning vocal performances, and the music really drives this franchise for me. Thanks for the lovely and informative review!
Hey Alex! Hope your day is going well! I see that the PS5 version of the game was recently released. Do you happen to know if there are any significant changes from the PS4 version? Thanks!
I just finished Monark and I think you made the right choice, while Monark is also fun in its own way, Caligula 2 was by far my favorite between the two games
I’m currently debating on getting this game or Gust’s Blue Reflection Second Light which comes out next month and is the sequel to what was an incredible JRPG for the PS4. Need something to hold me down while waiting for Shin Megami Tensei 5 and Rune Factory 5.
While Caligua Overdose was enjoyable enough for me to play it to the end, I never had any interest to check out the sequel. Mainly because I felt that Caligua 2 wouldn't improve anything and may be more convoluted than the original. Your review made it clear that this game is simpler yet better than Caligua 1 in every aspect! Great review! Also Alex, how does it run on the Switch? Is it a good port?
@@BacklogBattle that's a shame. Have you consider doing a comparison or different versions of a game you talk about on this channel. Or does it take too much time (which I can understand)?
@@kian26master I mean I can only really talk about the version I have, so I can’t really talk about something that I don’t own. Review keys are finite, so it’s not like publishers have extras. Tbf I don’t think they meant any disrespect. After all, what they tried to do with the slang IS part of the localization process. The problem is that they didn’t do that sort of thing consistently throughout, if they meant to use it. Original Japanese scripts typically tend to be bland due to the culture, so localization people need to somehow inject some vibrance to it without altering it too much. It’s a delicate balance.
@@BacklogBattle absolutely agree, I just don't like it when there's a noticeable difference in what being said, I may have became paranoid because of the localization changes in Fire Emblem Fates & to a lesser degree 3H lol.
I just platinumed the first game so I started this and it’s so much better in terms of the battles, graphics and is a lot more smooth. Thank goodness the Causality link has been decreased from 500, as that was so tedious in the past games. Also being able to accept all the quests rather than doing one at a time. I like the Caligula games OSTs the best, they seem to have put a lot of effort into the OST and matching the lyrics and meaning of each song to the respective musicians trauma. I have the Japanese version so I didn’t know about the slang translation ending up strange. Overall I’m liking this game, much more than Overdose and so much easier to play especially as I had issues with freezing in Overdose, and lack of autosave was terrible for sudden freezes
im sad that players who don't understand japanese won't understand the song(even tho its still a bop)since the song meaning is tied to the boss story and sometime feels like their backstory
