Easily one of the best mma grappling matches, The grappling exchanges were very competitive and entertaining, Ben is the only guy I have seen that wasn't afraid to fight Maia on the ground, Askren excellently took Maia down 4 times, Maia's sweeps to reverse the position were awesome, the way Ben scrambled out of bottom position, getting the side control vs a grapplier like a Maia shows how elite Ben's ground game is, he also landed some good punches, Askren had heavy hands for sure, he only lacked technique and speed behind those strikes
omg that spinning back fist from Ben lmao im not even trying to make fun of him. Truth be told, hes a beast. Nobody else will ever be that bad at striking and make it as far as Ben did
Ben is bar none one of the most fascinating fighters in MMA history; absolutely the most I ever fanboyed out for a fighter during his Bellator days and the initial teases of a UFC run that never came to fruition. He's essentially the last, *truly* one dimensional fighter to make it to the top levels of MMA; he basically just continued his wrestling career in MMA. Didn't even bother trying to pick up striking, and was even taunting his opponents about it back in Bellator 😂. They'd be talking shit about how they'll break his face, and he'd just laugh then say "lol sure buddy, anyways I'm gonna take you down and you won't be able to stop it". His philosophy was, your striking is only as good as your takedown defense. And "everyone's takedown defense sucks", as he put it. I do believe a prime Askren was a stylistic nightmare for most of the UFC's top 10, especially the guys who lacked elite wrestling. Demian Maia was always gonna be one of his worst matchups though. Just truly a cryptonite style for Askren's wrestling-only, barge forward, kamikaze style.
Those grappling match probably really entertaining Always like to see elite wrestler and Elite BJJ fighter using their original skills at each other instead of play safe and went full striking
it took me a while to gain appreciation for this match. I was too overwhelmed with the standing fight memeing, but it's quite a treat all in all. Askren really delivered as a entertainer in all three matches he had.
In their primes Ben would maul Maia imo. Askren was too far gone when he got into the UFC due to injuries, inactivity, and age. He was Khabib before Khabib was himself. In his prime Askren would’ve most definitely won UFC gold because of his wrestling being so damn suffocating. Not to mention his submission game is pretty high level.
Ben always got hate from ufc only fans. He’s one of the most exciting grapplers ever.always aggressive. Gaining position landing shots. Would be brutal to fight a guy like that. Even his wrestling matches at mizzou were exciting.

Dude, this was literally a razor-thin matchup, and both competed great. Don’t let the fact you don’t like Ben askren distract you from a great performance.
@@PsychExperience Take your own advise and don't let your obvious bias for ben act like we can't see what the facts are. Ben on the floor was dominated and before you go crying the man himself made no excuses for the loss, Maia outclassed him that night. The fact he did it by a SINGLE ARM choke was no "razor-thin matchup" that is just your bias not letting you see the facts... Ill wait show us where on the ground at any point Maia was not ahead in that department hence the transitions and eventual choke. He took control at the end of the first, totally beat him in the 2nd and then choked him cold out in the third round. And sit all the way down when it comes to the stand up, Ben had to desperately go for take down because while Maia isn't great and stand up, was literally doing better than him also in that department...
when it's a striker vs grappler match up it can be boring at most times specially when the grappler always goes for takedowns and holds the other person down or against the cage with not a lot going on, but when it's elite grappler vs grappler it can be a real treat like this and also the colby vs usman fight, except I really like Maia.
This was great to see again-- a really good fight. And it helped me remember how unfair a lot of people have been to Askren over the years. Yes he's a pain in the ass and a joker to try and get n the roster for a DECADE before this, but compare that to the BS tha Colby and others dish out every day, attacking family and saying stupid things. Maia still looked great at 41 years of age, and you could see even after being a BJJ elite after most of his life studying it, Askren actually did amazing as "just a wrestler" who dipped into JJ a whole back and worked his own style with both... and before he made that mistake (in the interview he was a pro about it, smiling and saying he knew it screwed up trying that action while being that tired LOL...) and got choked. Too bad Maia didn't have even more fights before his 40's, and too bad Askren didn't get into MMA before he already beat his body up in wrestling all those years. By the time this fight took place, Askren already needed that hip replacement-- by the time he was in with Masvidal, it was criminally too late. We saw how much Masvidal had trouble with Maia; imagine a healthy Askren that simply moved his head a little like years before. All it would have taken was a couple inches either way-- Askren took glancing flying knees and huge shots before. This fight took place WAAAAYYYY to late, but it was still great and educational. Kinda went exactly as it should have, but if healthier and younger maybe crazier. Maia of course the expert and pinnacle in finishing with grappling, Askren the expert in getting it there and transitions on the ground... so all either needed would be more time in MMA at a younger age. Both would have been somewhat unstoppable.
Honestly this was the first fight in the org I wanted for Askren. Don't put him against strikers give him one of the many great grapplers and prove how good his wrestling is.
Wow just rewatched this and it was much better than I remember! World class grappling and pretty even. Then you can see the moment Ben gets tired in the 3rd round. It was all over. That’s when the fear kicks in and you start looking for a way out. You can see the wheels spinning behind his eyes as his bulbous, gelatinous body starts to fail despite his best efforts. Those are dark thoughts my friends. Dark thoughts.
Na, that wasn't fear in Ben's eyes, he's taken flying knees from Douglas Lima and slammed by Lawler, what you saw was self disappointment. Known Ben since grade school, was on the wrestling team with him in high school. He for better or worse doesn't have fear. He was just pissed he gave up his back.
Maia being the underdog makes no fckin sense. Askren would go down standing or even Quicker on the Ground. The guy exchanged punches with Anderson Silva and had the submission record of UFC by that time.
Awesome grappling exchanges man. So cool to see funk stlye wrestling at the highest level, Olympic. Vs Damien Maia who was at the high level of BJJ. Amazing
Ben askeren was slightly ahead in this fight until he got submitted. He got warning couple of times earlier where in damian mia reversed his position when taken down. Damian mia was wizard on the ground. One of the best submission artists UFC has ever seen. Ben didn't notice it and paid the price.

@@daricklapaglia4337 This guy is biased for Askren which is why this is such a hilarious comment for them to make
Ironically a very good match

when it's a striker vs grappler match up it can be boring at most times specially when the grappler always goes for takedowns and holds the other person down or against the cage with not a lot going on, but when it's elite grappler vs grappler it can be a real treat like this and also the colby vs usman fight, except I really like Maia.
Well said man.
Ben was absolutely amazing at wrestling and would have been impressive if he had come along 10 years sooner.

Great fight
Один из моих самых любимых боёв в mma. Противостояний столь явных стилей.
Honestly this was the first fight in the org I wanted for Askren. Don't put him against strikers give him one of the many great grapplers and prove how good his wrestling is.
This mma if he don’t want to fight a striker stick to wrestling. This a stupid ass comment
He was an amazing wrestler and I wish he got into the UFC 10 years earlier. Lucky to know him...

I reckon Ben Askren is one of those fighters that came into UFC a bit too late in their careers...what ya think?
Yeah I reckon 2 or 3 years late for UFC.he was pretty much retired after dominating belator and one FC.

I reckon that Maia was 41 during this fight and Ben was 35.
Maia's transitions are a joy to watch..passed askren like butter. The skill level is out of this world.
I thought Bruce said "Ben F***ing Askren." 😂 1:35
360p resolution…. Can’t watch
Thank you brother

45 seconds left in round 1. Best take down ever.
Guys you might call me delusional but after watching this I don’t mind my chances against Ben 🤷♂️🤪
I like mine to I feel like the knee just shattered his chin
He’d spinning backfist you into oblivion you fool
You have no idea then if you think that.
Ben would maul in 10 seconds
@@antibieber9193return I think he meant in striking.
Great fight!
Maia being the underdog makes no fckin sense. Askren would go down standing or even Quicker on the Ground. The guy exchanged punches with Anderson Silva and had the submission record of UFC by that time.
Song?
Great fight !!!
I’m shocked Askren ever lost a fight. He’s a world class wrestler who looks like Mike Tyson when he lets the hands go.
People don’t understand askren was wayyyyy out of his prime by then
I mean so was Maia the guy was 41 in this fight
@@Unoriginalswine Correct. Im just saying, this Ben Askren, and old pre-UFC Ben Askren, two different guys.
Lets see Maia was 41 and Asken was 35. What are you talking about? He was 6 years younger than Maia. Maia was just clearly the superior grappler.
@@henryposadas295 did you see Ben Askren's body? he was out of shape coming into this fight.
@@SpaghettiTheEnforcer ben stopped training for a good physique after he left ONEFC prolly
11:50 ben not following up here looks like a missed opportunity on his part in my eyes... am I wrong?
Ben Askren "bjj guys are doing it wrong"....* proceeds to get choked out by bjj guy.
All I can say is that Askren ain't a boring grappler.
I’m here for the standup war ❤

After watching this I’m just amazed at how much success Ben in MMA
I can’t believe Ben submitted Ruthless Robbie. 👀
Best grappler in UFC ..
Maia vs Khabib would have been great
Did he pulled ben's hair in order to secure the choke ?
Awesome grappling exchanges man. So cool to see funk stlye wrestling at the highest level, Olympic. Vs Damien Maia who was at the high level of BJJ. Amazing

That’s why Woodley, Usman & Colby didn’t wrestle Maia, they didn’t want to get subbed like Ben taking it to ground 😂
Ben askeren was slightly ahead in this fight until he got submitted. He got warning couple of times earlier where in damian mia reversed his position when taken down. Damian mia was wizard on the ground. One of the best submission artists UFC has ever seen. Ben didn't notice it and paid the price.
ben askren has always been my favorite and got me into mma he gets a lot of heat but hes one of the goats
i had no idea this had even happened. i thought the masvidal fight was ben's last
