I have 6 of these exact same batteries. I agree about the BMS used. Not only is there no short circuit protection, but at least half mine also have no discharge or overcharge protection. The cells seem pretty good but they skimp like crazy on the BMS board to keep the price down I would guess.
Glad no one was injured during this short circuit test!
I have built 3 power boxes for ice fishing and per your recommendation I have a 10 amp fuse in each one!
My boys and I are all set for ice fishing. I also have each one set up with a Stryker 4 C, and we've been using them for summer fishing too! I decked two of the boxes one with 4 of single bright LEDs on one end and, 2 of the 6 LEDs strip lights. I followed your instructions from your how to video. That is a great video! The boys love the boxes too! Thanks so much!
I'd imagine this'll still be do well as a value-minded UPS battery upgrade, where it's always indoors at room temperature, where it's not moved around and have its insulation chafe, and where I don't plan on shoving a metal bar across the terminals.
I have some killer NEC batteries I'm selling right now. Designed specifically for the purpose you mention. 12v 5Ah, brand new, $30 + shipping.
And in regards to my prior post, explain how to correctly hook up the fuse and when to use it when using the Nermak LIFEPO4 battery. Thanks again.
I bought 6 of these Nermak 12v10ah batteries the beginning of this year. The BMS has been replaced with much better ones (SWX-HSL-4S4P-V5)
I had one of these and returned it after seeing your brute 10ah video.... Thank god.
Good call!!
These are being sold as a replacements for sla batteries in APC and Cyberpower UPS. Would they actually be safe for that because one would assume the UPS itself would have a short-circuit protection?
Awesome & thorough testing!
Subscribed.
Thank you, I was working on my friend's son's power wheel and I wanted to check the review on a lithium battery because I knew the dangers 👍
Hi there, I have 6 of these battery's bought them within the last 6 months, I have had no problem using them in computer UPS systems, since this video have you had any updated information on these battery's and did you duplicate the results?
We have not. We have recently transitioned out content to product spotlights.
Good video and thanks for showing the tear-down.
I'm of the opinion of using an external fuse instead of an internal one. For me, a lithium battery without an internal fuse is not a deal breaker -- so long as this fact is stated in the battery's specifications. Because one can easily add a quality external fuse and have better control over it like amp cutout and speed. Versus an internal fuse that doesn't specify these parameters or is inconsistent between different builds of the same battery. Also an internal fuse can fail w/o any indication and is harder to trace. Cannot replace an internal fuse either if its a software fuse implemented by a microcontroller and MOSFETs.
The more important BMS functions that absolutely must work are: (a) cell balancing speed & precision and (b) high voltage cutoff (HVC). Optionally there is LVC as well but I'd rather have better control over that with external control.
LOL, funny enough this video actually encouraged me to buy the Nermak! 😆 Because the BMS seemed to actually do what a BMS is SUPPOSED to do (charged the batteries correctly) and, as he said several times, the build quality is good! No idea why he didn't do full BMS functionality testing FIRST, and then the destructive fuse testing last. 🤔
Agree that an internal fuse is not all that important for higher voltage stuff... heck, always externally fuse electronics!
@@techno_johndid you buy this and did it work well for you?
Just found your channel and appreciate the info. All your recommended batteries seems to be from 1 company. Seems a bit bias or are you saying you've only found 1 company really worth your recommendation?
you should be ok with opening it up because lifepo4 has a very good safety record.
the cells may smoke if they are damaged but never catch fire unlike the 4.2 volt lithium standard.
that battery was very easy to open it should be like the 7 ah you tested where you had to use a dremel to cut it open
i think lto maybe safer in that i have seen a puncture test and it did not smoke
it looks like 18650 cells
So unfortunately I just purchased a 36mah Nermak 12v for a old jumper pack. We will be using it to run a winch and jump dead battery,s . In this instance. What size fuse should we use? 40 amp? 35amp?
Jeremy, could you please explain to us how to properly size a battery?
Sounds like a good idea for a video!
A good video/test would be a fire test of the lithium charging bag. Thanks
Ive got a BUNCH of these, they was all send to me for free. From 10Ah to 100Ah, do have any BMS upgrade suggestions?
Looks like a good battery for the price if your after some cells, I'd buy these just tear open and grab the cells from it, I assume its a 4s 5p config. Id also say that is not really a BMS but more like an active balance board instead, to be a BMS it will need a logic controller, temp sensor and short protection.
Could you send me a a link for the fuse I would need to prevent the short circuiting that occurred in your video that the internal BMS board was not able to prevent. Thanks
Good looking out bud. Don't need anyone's stuff burning down.
So I have 6 of these Nermak 12v 10AH. Series of 3 total of 36v 10ah. Because i saw your previous video stating this battery passed your test. I'll put a 10amp fuse
If you don't mind me asking, what do you use a 36v 10Ah bank of batteries for?
@@iceholepower8012 I bought these two 36v 750w 26inch front Hub Motor -Ebike made from china "Jaoupay Ebikes. So far it does what it's suppose to do, but again ive only had it for a month. We'll see how it goes and i'll update you
@@pogilisyus How as these Nermak held up? I just need to power a 1 watt draw device for about 8-10 hours.
@@mowomedia4801 so far so good...except for the SPARKs when you recharge. I also charge them one at a time. ALSO i bought a fireproof bag and put them while i charge them.
@@pogilisyus are they still holding up? I'm considering buying one to run a depth finder
You should probably start wearing leather gloves during short circuit protection in case you need to throw it out a window or something.
Great idea, I have a pair of hot gloves that I will start wearing for that test. Thanks!
the good thing at least with LFPs is you won't have nearly as bad of a thermal runaway with a short vs. other chemistries
I realize that I am 5 months late to this video but I am wondering if after this test if you now use the inline 10amp fuse wire to short across the terminals during testing? Thank you for this video. I have watched a few of yours today and have liked and subscribed.
you ever try upgrading the BMS? i have some 100AH lifepo4s and i bought bluetooth BMSes
Where did you get the blue battery tear down mat and parts holder? I looked at your tools I use but it's not there. Thanks
I will load it up. Here is the link. amzn.to/3oGecjC
Could you recommend a fuse???
I’m returning my Dakota lithium batteries but I’m not sure where to get the materials to package them. Any suggestions?
fedex or ups will pack it for you
I've been watching videos and have just about everything to build my power box...except batteries...I bought the big zombie can, so was considering 2 batteries...but don't know yet. I will say, I'm impressed, you taught me something today. I had no idea that these batteries had a BMS inside, I thought you had to put in an external BMS. But I was gonna use lead acid..not sure now
Lead acid do not have a BMS in them. Only lithiums because they are so much more energy dense. Thank you for watching!!
@@iceholepower8012 thanks for the response...lol, I did know that...I just didn't realize that the lipo, come with a BMS...thank you very much for your time
Can you charge lifepo batteries with lead acid battery charger?
Lifepo4 batteries are a higher voltage battery. We do not suggest charging batteries with batteries. Please use the supplied battery charger for you Lifepo4 battery
@@iceholepower8012 lifepo4 battery seller on Amazon typically don’t sell compatible chargers
That is why we have stopped the battery review videos. We feel there are only a few companies that we would suggest to consumers.
lifepo4 can still go up in flame with a puncture too
Where do i get the work mat like yours? G.
Thanks for watching!! All the tools in my videos can be found here. www.iceholepower.com/tools-and-supplies
I do have that battery using it in my friends EV scooter and so far so good after about a year of charging. I will buy that battery case, we take scooter on cruise ships and I want to transport a extra battery safely. My friends scooter take two in parallel for 10amp (I think). Thanks.
thanks
COOP
...
The magic smoke was let out. Quick reaction time though.
That's why I buy extra smoke.
Still has voltage so I guess there is still a bunch of magic smoke in there! lol
Isn't it really dangerous to breath in smoke from Lithium?
Yes, but that was the support circuitry smoking, not the cells
6:24 uh. You could've salvaged the cells. Why throw them away?
Now that dakota lithium has a new contract w BASS I think its time to void the warranty on the 54ah
If the channel grows enough to cover the cost of their battery, I will get one and test it out!
If you understand how these BMS units function, you'll understand why it got damaged during this test ! Bottomline... The BMS WILL get damaged if you don't stick to system max ratings !!
*3:55 Nothing is safer than LTO in the lithium set of chemistries
Good thing I waited on it
good call!

BmS means bare minimum standards on that battery
HAHAHA Totally going to say that next time I find a turd of a battery!
I never learn anything from your opening up of the battery.

Maybe you shouldn't push it beyond its limits so your opinion is crap
