Me too….I’ve watched a lot…. I cannot understand them and most of them make no sense like they’ve just made up the technique themselves. This is the clearest explanation I’ve seen
This was Soo easy to follow I'm going to try to knit a patchwork blanket for my best friend but wanted to incorporate her art in some way and thought this would be a great idea thankyou
You have a very kind voice and kind way of teaching ! Thank you , you make it look so easy ! Can I make a suggestion? More contrasting colors could help see what you’re doing better .
Thank you Marion! This is the first video (and I have tried many over the past few days) that I have watched and understood! You explained and demonstrated so beautifully. I can now carry on with my baby blanket that I have had to restart several times😄happy customer!
Hi Marion, thank you for your sew (sorry about the pun),easy to understand instructions. I would love to knit a piccy of my grand daughters face onto a cushion front for her. Happy Crafting Perrynobs
Thank you so much for an easy to understand video. I'm hoping to knit a jumper for my grandchild which has a car motif incorporated and this has given me the confidence to try.
This is great and I love your naration. I am knitting a girl's sweater with a panda on front. It is suppose to be double knitted but too intricate for double knitting to work.
That is such a clear explanation and thank you for going through it slowly - unlike some other videos I’ve seen! You’ve also just saved me £10 on bobbins 😊
Hi Justine! Absolutely- no bobbins needed, just use some paper or card!! I'm delighted you found the video useful! Sending kindest knitting wishes, love Merion and the LoveCrafts team x
I've finally found the tutorial I've been looking for thank you so much. Also I've from the UK and as you was knitting that the square just reminded me of the teletubbies belly 😂😂
Hi Merion. I found your video a couple of days ago after several attempts at trying to learn the Intarsia knitting method. Your instructions and demonstration was very clear, so hopefully I am all set to put my practice piece of work aside and attempt the real thing!! Thank you so much for your help. Joy Hall
Hi Robin! I am so glad that it helped! Intarsia is all about not getting tangled up! Good luck with your project, and if you DO end up with a little hole or two, don't worry about it, just stitch it from behind afterwards! Sending much love, Merion xx
Thank you for sharing this video. I can now forge ahead with my first Intarsia pattern. If I had an option to choose the picture for my Intarsia project, it would definitely be a cat. Perhaps the cat from Alice in Wonderland or something cartoonish. Again, thank you for sharing your technique, it is greatly appreciated 😺
This video may just save my bacon I am part way through a project which has repeats of pictures and I ended up for the back with about 30 bobbins which has made me put it to one side. However this video has definitely given me the confidence to try again.
Thank you. For some reason my brain was stuck on knitting in the round, and I couldn't figure out how the bobbins got back to the beginning of the color block. You turn the work and purl it back🤦🏻♀. Of course, so simple
Hi Ann, oh it's completely addictive - I started my Christmas knitting in September last year and I absolutely loved doing little intarsia pictures! Thank you so much for leaving us a comment! Kindest, Merion x
Hey there, so happy you enjoyed our tutorial! We have a pattern you might like here: www.lovecrafts.com/en-gb/p/mabels-christmas-sweater-knitting-pattern-by-suzy-rai Happy making!🧡
Hi Eileen, that is so kind of you to say, we're delighted that it helped! Del Boy sounds like a gorgeous boy - I love lurchers!!! I think this little tool might be a good starting point to turn a photo of Del Boy into a chart! knitwit.dynkarken.com/ xx
really helpful video thankyou so much. i would like to try one that says something on the front like merry christmas or even one that says hi there or smile.
I love your reindeer it is so cute. Your tutorial really clear to understand I never have enough nerve to try an Intarsia, I only knit an eye of an owl and the eye turned out to a bumpy not flat like your intarsia.I've been looking all over a daisy intarsia and can't find it. It must be really deficult to knit since the petals are so many and so closed thats why no one knit a sample. Thanks.
working on a Hockey themed sweater for hubby, this is my first chart knitting your video is the first one that makes sense to me, thanks now if I could find a chart with and 1983 Mustang convertible on it I would knit 2 sweaters
Wow Tessa, thank you so much - intarsia looks much more tricky than it really is as long as you take it steady and try not to get too tangled! Hope you're enjoying making pictures! Sending kindest knitting wishes from Merion and the LoveCrafts team x
Thankyou so much, I couldn’t understand why I was getting holes in my work! Then I didn’t really know what question I needed to ask? My next question is why are the answers not in the knitting pattern?
This is brilliant! Thank you so much. I have just one question though. I'm a beginner so I hope this question make sense: I would love to knit a scarf for my best friend and the pattern I want to follow uses only the knit stitch. I would love to "draw" her initial, but to do so (with the intarsia) I have to do one row with knit stitch and one with purl stitch or can I use only the knit stitch? Have an amazing day and thanks again for the tutorial!
You will have to do the one row knit/one row purl as far as I know - I'm a beginner too but from what I've tried before thats how it works & I saw no one with more expertise replied so I thought I'd offer my 2 cents 😅 someone can correct me if I'm wrong
How do you know how much yarn to wind on the bobbin, if the pattern doesn’t specify? Also, is it reasonable to carry a float across the shorter colour changes - as in the antlers?
Hi Alex, oh absolutely yes. The only thing to watch, is the same whether you use bobbins or balls, just keep an eye on them tangling up! Good luck! Love from Merion and the LoveCrafts team xx
Thank you for your video. Well done. There is a rose on my chart that has many color changes, nine in fact. Many bobbins or strands of yarn, and of course many ends to work in. Is there an way to handle the ends for a neater look? Thank you so m uch
Hello, I am new (super beginner) to knitting. I just started my first project and want to add a design to my sweater in the center front. Is this knitted square panel made to be attached to the sweater or is this just practice? Or do I have to knit the design while I knit the full sweater? Thank you. @LoveCrafts
Hi there. This intarsia panel is knitted into a sweater as go along. We have just knitted it as a patch to show you - but when you look at a pattern that has a motif in it, you will see that there is a chart to follow as part of the pattern. You could try the Paintbox interchangeable jumper patterns, they have nice clear instructions andmotifs here: www.lovecrafts.com/en-gb/p/holiday-interchangeable-motif-jumper-free-jumper-knitting-pattern-for-women-in-paintbox-yarns-simply-chunky-by-paintbox-yarns Hope that helps! Kindest, Merion and the LoveCrafts team x
You are such a wonderful teacher! So is it only when you do pictures in knitting that you put your yarn onto bobbins and when you do patterns in different colours you stand the yarn at the back keeping it on the balls?
Hi Fran, you can do either - bobbins are good when you only have little areas of colour, so that you don't have big balls of yarn to move around, but if you're working larger areas of colour, balls are fine. I'm so glad you found it useful! Sometimes these techniques look so much harder than they are - and actually if you just take your time it's really straightforward!!! Happy knitting and thank you so much for adding a comment to tell me!! xxx Merion xx
I’m new to intarsia & appreciate this clearly explained video. I have a question for which I’ve been unable to find an answer & hope you can help. If the contrasting color on the Purl side (for instance the pink in the video) is picked up several stitches out to the side from the last pink (knitted) row, that seems to create a float. Is there any way to correct that? If not, should the float be limited to 5 or less stitches?
It is a little tricky to knit Intarsia in the round as you won't be turning your work, so the yarn ends of the different colours might be in the wrong position meaning that you might need to make lots of cuts etc. There are ways to knit Intarsia in the round which we don't have any tutorials for I am afraid, but please reach out to our team via our Helpcentre on our website, if you need any help. ❤️🥰
So happy to hear that Louise! Even though it's a tricky skill to master, it's so rewarding when you get the hang of it! What are you thinking of making with this one? Merion x
Hi! I have a question! Great video by the way! I am trying to knit a stocking with a reindeer on it. Do I need to have a bobbin for the antlers if it’s just one stitch?
Hi Alexis - if you have just one stitch and it's near another bobbin of the same colour, you can use that. If it is just one stitch on its own somewhere, just snip off a length of the right colour and use that, and weave the ends in either side, no need for a complete bobbin. Hope that helps! Kindest, Merion x
Hi Gabriela, well, you most often work intarsia in stocking stitch (stockinette) and so it does involve some purling. But - there's no law that says you can't work it all in garter (knit) stitch - it will just be bumpier with less defined edges! sending kindest knitting wishes, love Merion and the LoveCrafts team x

Hi Kati, hmm that is one of the tricky part of intarsia - tension! You might find that when you have finished you can block it to stretch it out - that definitely does help to open up the image. Let us know how you get on! Kindest, merion xx
Gooday. It is very well explain but the colour are almost the same so I don’t see the difference I would love to see it again with contrasting colours. Please Thank you very much in advance. My english is not very good. I’m sorry. I hope you will understand. Have a nice day

Is it important that I use purl stitch for intarsia? Or can I use a different stitch?
Hi Gabriela, well, you most often work intarsia in stocking stitch (stockinette) and so it does involve some purling. But - there's no law that says you can't work it all in garter (knit) stitch - it will just be bumpier with less defined edges!
