So sad that the Government is preventing him from selling this craft around the world. And that Filipinos are proud to have Chinese products instead of products made in our backyards. We all should be supporting Local!!
During 90s every province experience disco figthing ang riots and one of the main weapon is balisong its because it is handy dandy easy to use. Thats why its illegal but still available in the market.
Yep, some beautiful handmade knives, though being so strategically located, the P.I. also seems to have an increasingly 'complex' economic, cultural, and political relationship with China.
To be honest I have both a Chinese Made Balisong, and Philippine Made Balisong, the main reason a lot of pinoys prefer the chinese made balisong nowadays is that it's cheaper, the final product is more polish, it comes in various design and color, and the handle is better for doing advance balisong flipping, the few advantage I see from Philippine made balisong is that, the blade is made from stronger metal, and the pivot pin is not made of screw.. interms of quality, both the chinese and Pihilippine Balisong, have low to medium quality, one of the reason is that our balisong forgers are still too tradiotional, we are already way behind compared to american and european made balisongs,, intead of using high quality metal, we still use scrap metals, instead of making sturdy handle made of meetal, we still use bones, horns, and scrap thin metal sheets..
I love flipping them, I love looking at them, I love collecting them, I love using them. I just love them. Next time I am in the Philippines, I am 100% without a doubt stopping by this man's shop. I would absolutely love to own one of these. I mean, if I lived there, this would probably be the career path I would stride towards. I'd love to learn how to make them by hand. As of recent, it seems like this niche community is beginning to grow again, I really hope more people can appreciate, enjoy and just overall love this craft. IMO, a Balisong is the perfect knife, you can do just about everything with it from everyday tasks to flashy manipulation. It really is a lot of fun. I don't think I'll ever get tired of them. It also has such a rich history to it.
Our history with this craft is ancient. While Western civilization was messing around with swords, scarab, and fencing, then onto guns. The humble Filipinos stuck to bolo, knives and sticks. We held back Spanish conquistadors for 40 years, with these humble tools. We settle disputes of honor with them as well. Navy Seals & special operations forces go to the Philippines to study our martial arts. That is some fine craftsmanship.
Unfortunately Onas charges 4x as much as other local shops. He caters to tourists who really don't know this. An original balisong (29 with brass handle) can be had for less than 20 USD. Onas sells it for over 100 USD. The other shops would even let you pick from their stock of knives behind the counter. So shop around.
i've gotten knives from those other shops and they are very cheaply made and fall apart. The Ona's I have are built like tanks and feel like they will surely last a lifetime. worth the extra bucks imo.
taga antipolo ako kaya ng minsang nkapag trabaho ako dyan sa brgy taal. hindi kona pinalagpas bumili bilang alaala. hanggang ngayon nasakin parin yon nakakamiss tuloy sa lugar nayan.

I prefer the traditional balisong why would we need to improve it much more anyways? its one of the worst knives when you compare it to other knives, might as well just embrace the traditional built and be much more creative with the blade designs, my barber has a balisong barber knife and its pretty neat
Filipino balisong was made with actual utilitarian purpose in mind. Now if all you want to do is flip and do tricks, then stick with your Chinese and American balisong, you don't seem to be the type who gives a damn about culture and tradition after all.
Like katanas are banned in japan but only a handful of blacksmiths still make for display and preserving their culture. Filipinos despite being banned by their govt should also do the same to honour their ancestral past!

I was surprised that balisongs get intercepted, because I already have 3 balisongs (and more than 30 other Filipino traditional blades acquired from as far as Ilocos and Sulu), and yet never had a problem with legal stuff. Sometimes, the sellers/blacksmiths also include police clearance when shipping the blades.

That accent switch caught me off-guard. As a native Batangueño living in North America, it brought a smile to my face.

Haven't bought from Ona, and yeah I heard it was pricey. So far the only ones I've got are from Giron, Almazan and Lopez
Where are these shops located ? I’m going to the Philippines in May. I’m curious if they are near Angeles.
