I enjoyed it when I was a kid, and enjoyed rewatching it for this video, but I can't really call it a GOOD film, unfortunately. Enjoyable, sure, but not really *good*. It's mostly just sad what happened to the 2d animation department after, and I would've loved to see how the original storyline with Alameda going after the white house would've gone!
I enjoyed it but I was super into horses so Spirit was my JAM when I was a kid. I just really wish we could've seen how the attack on the white house with an army of bulls would've gone, and wish that it hadn't been the killing blow for the 2D department.
This movie is an interesting phenomenon. by itself, it’s mostly a generic children’s movie. Although, the effect it had on Disney as a whole is quite substantial. I vaguely remember seeing it go by in commercials when I was a little little kid, but I never knew the part it played in destroying an entire branch of Disney.
On it's own, this movie is mostly just a generic kid's cartoon - but coming from DISNEY, the company that brought us the golden age, that brought us movies like Hunchback of Notre Dame, Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, ect. - it was just...not really their thing, and their lack of practice with a project that had more low-brow slapstick type humor in a feature length format kind of shows. Along with the effect it had on the company as a whole, primarily the 2d animation department getting canned, and the potential it COULD have had if they went with the original storyline...it's interesting what you find if you look beyond the surface!
Unpopular opinion, but I feel like Disney proper (as in seperate from Pixar, marvel, etc) has declined and never really fully got back up after the Disney renaissance. There have been some great films here and there, like the Atlantis movies, treasure planet, emperors new groove and lilo and stich, but in the general sense, it’s really hard to say that Disney proper has had a solid golden “era” of sorts again since then in terms of quality movies and such.
This is true. They had a TON of momentum there for a bit, but then it dropped off and never really caught back up. There was a lot of self-sabotage, like the lack of advertising and bad release dates for movies they just sort of figured wouldn't do well that probably would have done great if they had the same resources and advertising as other films, but very few of their more recent works captured any sort of 'magic'. I think Princess and the Frog was the closest to the old golden age movies, and it makes me sad to know that the 2d princess stories are basically a thing of the past.

Yeah...it seems like actually GOOD, classic, memorable movies are few and far between for them. Most of them are flash in the pan remakes that are popular for about a week, everyone realizes they suck and just forget about them, and mid-level animations that all look the same and are also completely forgettable.
Gosh yeah, seeing such good animation and design wasted on half-baked stories that get executive meddled to a shadow of their former selves is always sad. This animation style would've been great for a kid's tv series or something - the movement and colors and sharper shapes were great!
