The Idea of You | Why Anne Hathaway's Performance Should Not Be Missed

  • I love a good rom-com and Michael Showalter’s latest film on Prime Video, The Idea of You, was a perfect Saturday night movie.
The film features a fantastic cast, led by the luminous Anne Hathaway and starring Nicholas Galitizine as a Harry Styles type boy-bander who becomes infatuated with Hathaway’s Solene after a chance encounter at Coachella. That’s right, a chance encounter at Coachella, which means whatever reservations you have about this film from that line alone, leave it out the door.
Showalter is able to sweep you into a story that really might not have worked as well without Hathaway. She dominates every scene with even the softest voice, and it inspired me to go back through some of her filmography and marvel at how wonderful she has been throughout her career. If you haven’t seen her performance in Rachel Getting Married, do yourself a favor and make it a double feature.
Enjoy being swept off your feet!

I hate to be nitpicky, but Solene’s daughter is 16 when the story begins (not 17) and she never had a crush on Hayes Campbell, her crush was Rory. And of course she says she’s not into August Moon at all at the time of the Coachella meet-and-greet. She claims to have outgrown them and prefers aggressively talented female singers now. But I agree with you that the ending solidifies just how deep the two characters’ connection is.

Loved this movie. I've watched it more than once just to catch all the nuances as Nick's character, Hayes, tries to figure out how to make what he sees as a once-in-a-lifetime connection a reality and help Ann's character, Solene, overcome her reservations.
And, the music is sooo upbeat and catchy, I'm using it for exercise.

I’ve gotta give this a rewatch. Maybe when it starts getting colder and I can curl up in a blanket. Ultimate romcom viewing experience

Incidentally, the name, Solène is *not* pronounced Soleen.

This movie is trash, not even in a fun trashy way. Melodrama a few steps above made for tv movies.
