I'm so sorry that you had to experience this. I've been wanting to become a nun for quite some time and this definitely turns me off quite a bit. It's like some of these monks forget that a woman gave birth to them. We are all human, and there is nothing wrong with a woman going and seeking the spiritual path.
Your vision is beautiful and one that I can more easily follow given its inclusive tenents and direction. Traditional buddhism with its patriarchal practices and outlooks is long overdue for retirement.

That said, my old man was a loser alcoholic, so the idea of mourning a drunk who dies young is alien to me, I was glad when I heard he died. Ordained 32 years.. Yogini style is what occurred. We were not supported by the tibetan.patriarchy. in any way except ordaination So we became self.sufficient .Not monastic. Self .sufficient. We are a neurotic bunch. I am 75.. I have.no regrets in seeking a life outside of the Box .. unlike the nun here I was a wife a mother a soldier a journalist and many other hats I wore.
I hope to graduate as an acupuncturist and then ordain as a Buddhist nun. Hopefully somebody can grant me permission to be a nun and be an acupuncturist to impoverished people as well. But taking care of my health right now. I'm glad you inspire us!

Hi there are many things in this video that I have thought about over the years, particularly regarding cultural sexism in Buddhist communities and how western nuns support themselves financially. I wonder is there any such thing as an Ani Network? Or an online sangha that nuns can join?
Hi Fiona I started the Kalyanamitra fund 20 years ago and its now a monastery. There is the non Himalayan nuns alliance, but they dint do much. There is the Alliance for Bhikkhunis that help theravada nuns but exclude everyone else. My advice would be just to support Western monasteries, of whichbthere ae only 3 in the world that dont charge us to stay.
I love what you're saying. I realized some time ago that all well known enlightened people,guru's and such are men. And I always like to talk to people about it and ask why,how come? I know there's many reasons. What do you all think?

Ajahn Sumedho and Ajahn Sucitto who created Siladhara Order. Ajahn Candasiri, she lives in Scotland now as she was refused full ordination. Its due to the Thai Sangha who refuses to acknowledge women as deserving of full ordination - we know Ajahn Brahm was excommunicated for going against the beliefs of the Sangha. Its not easy being in female form and I practice Forest Theravada Tradition due to the simplicity and as the Buddha lived - while aware the Bikkhunis in this tradition are severely marginalised so I'm torn there which makes practicing what the Buddha taught and what a bunch of male forms believe difficult. Its difficult to respect the male Ajahns and Lamas because they teach non-self Anatta, yet are heavily identified as male forms. A Theravada nun visiting Burma for example could be killed. Female monastics are not supported and are left open to abuse, unlike male monastics who are given all possible support. Bikkhunis like Venerable Canda are struggling to establish a monastery because of the Patriarchy system. Monks like Ajahn Sujato are making great progress with Bikkhunis in Australia and with also the Gay LGBT community, embracing all. I really like you, your heart is open and its so refreshing to hear a Buddhist Nun speak with full power and authority. You are a blessing and much needed figure for all to be inspired by. You make me feel included as a human. Not as an object. Metta.
Hello, I agree, misogyny is still a huge problem. Nuns like Bhikkhuni Anandabodhi, Ayya Tathaloka, Ayya Hassapanya and others also need to be mentioned as working with Ajahn Sujato.
@@bodhicittafoundation9473 Being a female form myself and older, I have sincerely tried to understand what the problem is concerning 'power' issues ... I believe its because we humans can bring nothing to earth, life, add to it, except for reproduction of new human forms, I suspect that male forms know they can not bring anything to earth, can not reproduce, so they cling to worldly power because for female forms to be able to reproduce AND be in full power of their own lives means males are simply used for seed and as a consort, as such. It doesn't seem to matter if a woman chooses celibacy and not to reproduce (as I have) my form represents a 'threat' to the male because he knows he truly has no genuine power. The female brain, heart is an endless source of love and giving, from a place that supports all. The societal constructs ensure that the 'dominant' males (white) are to uphold this code in order to be 'valid'. Yet the Buddha taught skillfulness and a monk who is suffering from cognitive dissonance is still attached to the worldly ideals/conventions. At the root, males feel useless and so attach to a semblance of power - pride. As you know, the Buddha only rejected the idea of female monastics due to the fact they would be living in the forest with all its dangers. Otherwise he was able to admit that females of course are able to realise Nibanna. It goes way back before the Patriarchy took hold, before the last ice age, when women fought, hunted and carried their babies while doing so, were nomadic, after the ice age women developed agriculture and settled in places, its here the development of women settling and males taking over agriculture where the roots of patriarchy were born. So what the Buddha teachs us about Sankaras and Vedanas and form as Anatta - the males are practicing transcending - while still attached to the fear of nothingness/an instrument of nature. We are a threat. Are encouraged/conditioned to be classified as a threat to survival (becoming) Simple as that. Blessings to you dear Sister, we are in this form as a blessing, not a curse, don't believe the narrative which we also have been conditioned to invest in, trust the Dhamma.

I agree with everything you said. Western monastics must create their own way. In America, ordination is a very very very serious and dangerous decision. If you do not have independent means, I urge you NOT to get ordained. In this country you must work. The lamas all have job, even the great incarnations, and you must too. You must have medical insurance and retirement, investments and security first for your old age. If you know the teachings well enough, your job will be your monastery and your living practice until retirement, but if you give up working you are going to be in real trouble in every way. Conform to the pattern for a healthy, happy outcome and jump into a new type of renunciation. Being a homeless woman is not conducive to practice and is a serious danger in this uncertain economy. This is foundation time, so don’t feel bad about it. Help to build good foundations and all will be well for the future. HHDL told me, “ If everyone in your country works, you must work too.” I don’t see why we can’t figure out a way for monastics to work part time, from home, or off and on. But it is not healthy to think you can live as monastics of the past have done.
I can understand that some nuns have no choice but to work, but I really disagree that this is conducive to the monastic life. We need lay people to be educated about the value of people who live in vows and who practice full time. If monastics live like lay people, there isn't much point in being a monastic and the whole tradition will be lost. Theravadin Westerners have many monasteries that thrive in the US. Its just a shift in educating lay people as well as less focus on Tibetan Lamas and a more balanced approach to value all monastics for the Dharma to take root in the West, we need the four fold sangha and we need people to support monasteries and places where people can practice full time. Being a monastic is hard and we will never have the problem of "what if everyone ordained." The protestant work ethic is not wjat the Buddha taught, its a capitalist fear tactic.
Had to watch this three times as wasn't sure what to make of it..... I'm also on the buddist path and didn't know hardly anything about nuns. Also wondered about sexual abuse,etc and your post burst my bubble which I've been gutted about. Just watched it again and read peoples posts and now so grateful for your honesty. Dissolutioned to know sexual abuse does go on in the buddist communities , i suppose its obvious it would but I'm very dissallutioned dismayed and saddened. Hi Rachel, sexual abuse is a fairly small portion and many Buddhist communities and teachers are good, I just have to be honest about the full spectrum. Its no more common in Buddhism than another community.
Seeing someone and having a look of horror on ones face and then very deliberately turning around and walking away in the opposite direction is aversion and not equanimity. Making ones own issues with desire the burden women have to carry is also not wisdom.

7.14 Tibetan teacher who advised you to wish for male life in next life is wrong. He mistakes Tibetan cultural view as that of Buddhism. Dalai Lama said "in Buddhism your family status, caste, creed, gender, tribe etc doesn't count" 15. 33 you found the training "intellectual and dry" because you haven't finished the course. It is probably a gelug monastic institution. Their system is to finish all the intellectual and scriptual course before the contemplation, meditation, and the not-so-dry course starts. Traditionally nyingma sect takes you to non- intellectual course much faster. Each system has its own pros and cons

Hi Bhavana, Its hard in India. If you are in Nagpur there are many local temples but not good training. Best place to go would be Sri Lanka to train or Thailand, Venerable Dhammananda.

To be clear, not all Buddhist monastics are celibate. There are monks who are married (in some traditions).

I agree with everything you said. Western monastics must create their own way. In America, ordination is a very very very serious and dangerous decision. Hi Bhavana, Its hard in India. If you are in Nagpur there are many local temples but not good training. Best place to go would be Sri Lanka to train or Thailand, Venerable Dhammananda.
