Yea, this has been one of the biggest complaints starting from the base game late bosses continuing all throughout the DLC. And I know the go-to advice is "don't heal in neutral, wait for combo" but unless you've memorized everything a boss does, you ain't gonna know when his combo-chain will continue, so your choice is either take the risk & attempt to heal or don't and risk dying to literally the next thing that touches you. Facing these bosses w/o healing feels good on the other hand, to the point where it seems like healing should now be seen as more of a crutch, a mechanic you should get used to not needing rather than an in-game mechanic to play with. The fact that poise bar recovers quickly when enough time passes of u NOT hitting the boss further makes healing feel bad cause you're using the windows u could've attacked to heal now, thus resetting your posture bar progress. All this would be fixed while keeping the same hyper aggressive boss design, if you could heal about 2x faster OR actually be able to cancel animation your heals when you see them preparing to hit ya, at the price of you either not healing at all, or just healing partially depending on when you cancel the heal - the price would be that you wasted a flask for a minor heal, but we'd be free from this "chug, get hit thus nullifying chuck, back to square 1, or stay in 1-hit death range and hope for the best".

While I’m a long time fan of these games, their gameplay is by no means my strong suit. I used to solo bosses in my younger days in ds1, ds2 & BB where the combat was more accessible & telegraphed. But ds3 & ER the bosses are just too quick & fluid & seemingly unpredictable, & I’m tired from adult life so I just view these games as a partially multiplayer experience now. Open world is for solo, bosses are for jolly co-operation. & personally I have much more fun fighting bosses with people anyway
The combo breakdowns are helpful, but his rollcatch is not shown. I am thinking about the one where he drags his spear on the ground for a brief moment before attacking. I am not sure if he can choose to use this attack as part of any combo or if it is part of a specific combo that is not shown here. It might be tied to whether or not you roll away from his initial strikes.
He uses this move on me constantly when I’m in close and dodging his swipes. He’ll use it as the last move in his combo, or as a roll catch. So annoying to learn, because he keeps switching up the combo ender. 😂
This guy took me 30+ tries, first 5 I got almost 0 hits in, 10-20 was just learning move set and when to punish how greedy I can be (not much btw) etc, and the last couple attempts I got him to a slither of health. He is my favourite boss in the DLC by a lot, so cool. Not as hard as malenia which some were anticipating but certainly one of the hardest bosses in Elden ring. Loved this fight, highlight of the DLC for me so far
Your fight video is the best I saw for now, I love how he used all his moves. Lots of video I watched, he didn't used his giant snakes attacks at all, where in almost EVERY TRY I did on him, he used that ultima skill where severals snakes hits before doing the spear explosion on the ground. What a cool fight, probably one of my favorite in the whole Elden Ring game ! So fun to fight and learn him !
Some of his attacks can be parried, I tested it but it's hard to see sht because of the dark room and his flame BS. But I'm not deterred tho, it's only a matter of time. I'm taking my own time to beat him and enjoy all content and all area. Thanks Fextra, your website and videos are very helpful for Foul Tarnished (or Mongrel Intruder). The reason I have unlocked him is I got lost to his area and excited for the creepy ass looking enemies (parried all those deadly flame red knights to death). I realized it kinda an endgame. Sht... I haven't even explored all of the map and I've unlocked BAYLE DREAD DRAGON AND MESSMER. What is wrong with me... BTW I HATE THAT GOLDEN HIPPO (altho it's a rhino)! Always 1-2 shots when you're playing without summons. Can't even fight it honorably xD
i love how you dont even dodge it in your own guide at 3:03. dodging the first sweep doesnt work cause your still in roll recovery and your getting hit by the back attack.
Ye lmao, I already beat Messmer without scadu fragments, was doing another run without them and I noticed this attack was one of the few that still got me, so I wanted to see how to dodge it consistently, and the guide fails to do itm smh.
I’m by no means a good player but I went through this guy second try on NG+5 at level 160 using the backhand blades. Maybe that’s a good weapon for Messmer ?
This DLC has been kicking my ass so bad that I’ve been running mohgs spear with heavy stone shield. Something about Messmer made me switch back to my normal dual scythe blood/frost build and I absolutely nuked his health bar. It legit only took me 2 tries once I switched, something about his attack timings felt like Melania for me
I didn’t even know about the Hornsent part. I didn’t go the normal way in. I accidentally found the back door while exploring trying to get to the second finger ruins. I hope beating Messmer without Hornsent doesn’t lock me out of any new weapons…
not sure if he stated this in the video (haven't fully watched it yet) but its worth using flamedrake talisman +3, erdtree favor +2, and dragoncrest +2. makes him do normal damage and not two shot you
There is a more powerful pearldrake talisman in that area too. I found it after the fight lol. You get it by climbing down the arm of a hanging jesus statue. Not the one that takes you up.
Thanks for your video I almost made a mistake and thank god I couldn't kill him because I wanted his spear, but thanks to you I found out that he is the last boss you should kill and getting hornsent's help makes it a lot easier
Just a hint for anyone still struggling, in phase 2 you don’t have to learn most of the snake attacks, roll right when the snake opens its mouth. I appreciate the telegraph thanks Miyazaki!
The main problem im having is seeing the snake moves when he transitions to 2nd phase all the moves are everywhere and i cant tell when i need to dodge
Stopped playing when I got to Mesmer months ago. I platinumed Elden Ring and Bloodborne and even beat Dark Souls 3 for the first time and now deciding to come back to beat the DLC. Let me tell ya, this is such a big change of pace from DS3 by a long shot. Grace be with yall 💫🙏⚔️
ngl, i found Messmer pretty much after defeating Rellana and the Hippo. i tried exploring more and got to the Ancient Ruins of Rauh and then kept on getting lost and not knowing where to go after that. i should probably get an exploration guide up. anyways, i’m not gonna do any of that. time to retry Messmer.
Man after 2 hours, i finally beat this guy, he gave me a straight wooping. Weirdly every boss before him i did under 5 tries so i was pretty confident i was gna beat him the same. Man was i wrong, new game +4 lvl 150 with 9 blessings. I ended up cracking and using the mimic summon i was at my peak souls mental breakdown. He is genuinely very hard and i apologise for thinking this dlc wasn’t difficult lol cause this was a struggle.
This boss is so unbelievably cool that I don’t even care if he’s been kicking my ass for the last hour and a half straight, that phase 2 cut scene had me hype
okay, i died like 15 times now and i was questioning what i was doing wrong. this video made me realize it's too early for me. i was getting 1 shotted by the slightest graze and my greatsword was dealing 200 per hit. man, this DLC is brutal.
This boss is fkn doing my head in. I fucked up too as I killed hornsent by helping Leda, thinking this is the only chance to get his weapon. Now I can't summon him and this boss snakes just kills me all the fkn time. GG
My game glitched and it said I killed him and I got his remembrance, but he killed me when I died and I respawned the Boss room was cleared and the grace was there
First phase was really hard for me because of the aoe attacks that followed some of his combos, but once you get to phase 2 the fight is practically over, the snakes are easy to dodge and can be punished easily.
Its always interesting to see what bosses people struggled with. I beat messmer within 6 tries while rellana killed me over 30 before i got her. Commander gaius i had to cheese.
I just finished this fight after about 4 hours of trying. By far the hardest boss I've ever fought in a fromsoft game. But I also made the fight harder for myself by starting the dlc with my ng+4 character instead of a fresh one
i saved my wonderous physique for phase 2 and doubled up on the damage mitigation to give me a bigger margin for error because it was kicking my ass too. Finally got through because of that.
I got him to 0 health and he decided to pull out another attack and killed me with it. He then proceeded to die automatically after the attack ended. I hate this game

Been on this guy for 8 hours now
L boss design
Yep, messmer was like my 3rd boss because I was too damn nosey in this area 🤣
@@JoshArtisto Lol we are the same. Funny choice of words, nosey, I like it! xD
Messmer is my 3rd boss and he kills me with two hits even with def talismans. :(
@@_Eternita_ Save the best for the last!
I watched this vid then beat the scaley SOB with 2hp and a dream. U the goat man
i love how you dont even dodge it in your own guide at 3:03. dodging the first sweep doesnt work cause your still in roll recovery and your getting hit by the back attack.
Ye lmao, I already beat Messmer without scadu fragments, was doing another run without them and I noticed this attack was one of the few that still got me, so I wanted to see how to dodge it consistently, and the guide fails to do itm smh.
He has also an attack where he drags his sword on the floor for a delayed up-swipe which is not shown here and which gets me every time.
Reminder to self to always watch fextra boss guide, really helped me
Have to say when I opened that boss door I didn't think Messmer was gonna be behind it, I'm like those runes are gone lol
Tried for 1 hour straight without luck , then did Hornsent quest, summoned him, and not even 2 fights I beat him! Praise Hornsent!!
Hornet is trash for me😂
@@WhoisDxoFr bro just sits in a corner
I’m by no means a good player but I went through this guy second try on NG+5 at level 160 using the backhand blades. Maybe that’s a good weapon for Messmer ?
This DLC has been kicking my ass so bad that I’ve been running mohgs spear with heavy stone shield. Something about Messmer made me switch back to my normal dual scythe blood/frost build and I absolutely nuked his health bar. It legit only took me 2 tries once I switched, something about his attack timings felt like Melania for me
why do you guys keep putting messages right on the summon option??? had to go offline to properly do the fight
what do you do when every time you get to 2nd phase, guy spams the goo attack under your feet and follows up with the jumping AOE attack?
No use Dragoncrest Greatshield talisman not the +2
Thanks bro I beat him on my 5th atrempt no summons and rivers of blood and nagakiba.
Thanks for your video I almost made a mistake and thank god I couldn't kill him because I wanted his spear, but thanks to you I found out that he is the last boss you should kill and getting hornsent's help makes it a lot easier
He’s melania all over again… he’s so much pain… I’ve fought him 20 times and haven’t even gotten him to second phase
did you beat him yet?
fought him 60 times and haven't got to second phase lmao
@@JuneAssassin21 use a bleed weapon. he has a lot of health
Just a hint for anyone still struggling, in phase 2 you don’t have to learn most of the snake attacks, roll right when the snake opens its mouth. I appreciate the telegraph thanks Miyazaki!
Over 200 attempts on him for me and I had to tap out and use the mimic tear. Tough decision.
Thank you for the guide. I learned when to dodge his attacks.
help ive forgotten how to soulslike and im panic rolling left and right.
Twinkle toe grab attack is the bane of my existence
The main problem im having is seeing the snake moves when he transitions to 2nd phase all the moves are everywhere and i cant tell when i need to dodge
i stop dodging that snake as it too hard...just lock on to the head and block rite thru until snake disappers - that worked for me.
I've gone through at least 90 attempts lmao you made the dodges look so easy
ngl, i found Messmer pretty much after defeating Rellana and the Hippo. i tried exploring more and got to the Ancient Ruins of Rauh and then kept on getting lost and not knowing where to go after that. i should probably get an exploration guide up.
anyways, i’m not gonna do any of that. time to retry Messmer.
He is genuinely very hard and i apologise for thinking this dlc wasn’t difficult lol cause this was a struggle.
having hornsent mid-battle to not scale the boss health is such a neat idea, and great guide fextra!!
how do you get the hornsent summon?
This boss is so unbelievably cool that I don’t even care if he’s been kicking my ass for the last hour and a half straight, that phase 2 cut scene had me hype
okay, i died like 15 times now and i was questioning what i was doing wrong. this video made me realize it's too early for me. i was getting 1 shotted by the slightest graze and my greatsword was dealing 200 per hit. man, this DLC is brutal.
I beat him on 3rd try thanks to your vid!!
I have fought this man 6 times and have yet to get a single hit on him,he presses me so fast
he's got so many different attacks that look similar I love a good challenge ^^
For hornsents quest do you have to beat messmer while hornsent is summoned or can you just summon him once die and beat him normally?
You never have to summon any npc during a fight to finish their quest
For the leap at the start I count 1 2 3 dodge, then the second he's hit 1, then dodge.
Very cinematic fight at the end, it showed everything you talked about
Messmer was in a really good mood in this vid.
I don’t ever want to fight this dude again
How many bosses are in the shadowkeep? I only fought the hippo before I continued to Messmer? Did I mess something up?
Other two bosses are technically in other areas, but would count as Shadow Keep to access
This boss is fkn doing my head in. I fucked up too as I killed hornsent by helping Leda, thinking this is the only chance to get his weapon. Now I can't summon him and this boss snakes just kills me all the fkn time. GG
I beat him after 50 plus tries yesterday, I wish I watched this before hand lmao. I was raging at my friend who was in a party chat with me
This mf OP I can’t lie , hella big and fast , I don’t look up how to beat bosses usually but I had to look this up
gg , i love how this guides are played , nice kills
My game glitched and it said I killed him and I got his remembrance, but he killed me when I died and I respawned the Boss room was cleared and the grace was there
I never even saw his second phase
Multiple attempts, ended up killing him like 50 seconds. That second phase is too much 🤣
First phase was really hard for me because of the aoe attacks that followed some of his combos, but once you get to phase 2 the fight is practically over, the snakes are easy to dodge and can be punished easily.
This prolly just saved me 5 hours of my life
The phase 2 snake attack combo is destroying me
i saved my wonderous physique for phase 2 and doubled up on the damage mitigation to give me a bigger margin for error because it was kicking my ass too. Finally got through because of that.
Bleed worked WONDERS for me in this fight
I got him to 0 health and he decided to pull out another attack and killed me with it. He then proceeded to die automatically after the attack ended. I hate this game
I’m gonna fucking cry I finally beat him after 56 tries on Ng+7 thx for the guide😭🙏
I somehow got him to 5% on first try blind and now I'm getting my cheeks thoroughly clapped after like 50 attempts.
3:04 this is the one attack I came here to learn 🤦
*Walk in….Wait….Roll…wait….roll….PRAY!
I nearly burst a blood vessel fighting him
I am an idiot who killed hornsent.. now I'm stuck with him
I killed him too. Dude creeped me out. He had to go
I have taken like hundreds of tries to beat this guy solo.
Got Messmer after over an hour. Finally decided on Mohg’s spear blood build with the great shield Spirit ashes ftw. 🙌
Thanks for showing how to dodge the snakes. Beat him 1st try right after watching.
