I like how you takled about your temperature changing when you looked at the pallet. My experience is that the images give me an immediate reaction like: 'Wow!' or ''Yeasss!' or Ouch!' The Mary El is one of my favourites right now! Enjoy your journey!
Congrats on getting the Mary-El! You deserve generosity, you've been so generous to the community throughout the years. This deck has a special place - the cards are evocative and they also give me a physical reaction to temperature and emotion. This deck... it's just gorgeous.
Kelly, I love that you've shared this personal video with us. I really want to stress how great it is to see someone talking about diversity in tarot and witchcraft more generally. I strayed from the path for a long time because the alienation I felt from hetero-normative and racist-through-omission books, forums and imagery was something I couldn't get past when I was younger. Preach it!
+amylenable 'racist-through-omission' is right! Microagressions are everywhere - we need to start talking about them openly. Thanks for sharing your experiences x
Yeees! I love the fact that Mary-El has found its way to you (also kudos to the donator!)! I've been waiting for the right moment to return to it. I love the depth of this deck and everytime I see it my subconscious just explodes with responses; however I've felt that it's so intense that I rarely used it, so I didn't bond with it enough to fully understand it. Mary-El fulfilled all of my long-kept hopes for the deck, even though there are a (very) few selected images I don't completely get/agree with (yet). I love how related this deck is to Thoth. The only downside, for me, is that I feel like the guide is sometimes written in an odd way when it comes to choice of diction/syntax. And how 'sticky' the cards are. The vibrancy of colours and size of the cards really really benefits the wonderful illustrations but the Mary-El tarot really is a bitch when it comes to shuffling. Oh! By the way! I've tied a ribbon around the stack of cards. This makes them easily removable from the box, because this way I can simply lift them all by using the bow I've tied. Like you said, the box is such a good examble of how tarot/oracle card packaging should be made. I'll look forward to your insights on Mary-El! Watching the second half of the video now :)
I got mine last week and am in awe of the imagery... it's beautiful, thought provoking, and confronting at times, which is awesome for me! I don't think you can help but notice the dick cards. Honestly I thought it was cause I've been single nearly a year that they seemed to stand out to me, lol! ;) I trimmed mine this weekend and it's opened up the imagery even more for me. Fucking beautiful deck. ❤️
About the Queen of Discs, sometimes we grow massively from pain. It could be something like that. I know I have grown most in my life through deep emotional pain. Sending lots of love
So many people in the tarot community seem to be discovering this deck right now, haha I'm one of them also.;) I ordered the Mary-El last week after seeing The Truth in Story's video about it. It should arrive tomorrow, I am soo excited!
I'm so happy you finally have this deck and really enjoyed seeing your first impressions of it. I love that you were so moved by the Queen of Swords and share your impression of the High Priestess card (the ultimate deal breaker card for me). I made a review video of this deck last year which may be of interest to you. Mary-El is the heaviest, meatiest and densest of the modern Tarot decks that I own. The depth of the imagery, the art and the fact that this deck was over a decade in the making, really commands respect for me in these days of throwaway Photoshop-made a deck in a weekend cards. I love the sheer range of cultures the creator pulled from, and that it was all done by one woman, so it is completely her vision. I haven't looked at mine in months because I have been buying decks like a mad man and need to slow down and revisit this one soon. Thank you for a very entertaining video! P.S The baby crying as soon as you mentioned "Labyrinth" was SO appropriate!
+rodriguezmystic OMG, I know! 'Slap that baby!' (Hehehe.) ;) I MUST watch your review, how could I not know about that?! And TEN YEARS in the making?! YES! That really does make it feel even more evocative and there's so much more respect directed towards its creator and its legacy as a deck.. Awesome!
I so want to want this deck, I can see why people love it but I'm just not feeling it, maybe in time the Mary El will make its way onto my wishlist, we'll see.
+MrsTeePotTV I can definitely seek why people *aren't* drawn to it, and I think that I wouldn't have been either if I had seen it earlier on my Tarot journey.
I haven't been drawn at all to the Mary El Tarot. I've looked at so many reviews and haven't felt anything. But watching this, I feel the deck is calling me through the video... This tends to happen with decks when it's time to work with them... I might have to look into this deck further. Thank you so much! Great video!
The Mary-el is by far my favorite deck. The lessons are endless. I have never experienced such a wise, hard-hitting, purifying deck. Looking forward to hearing your impressions once you've worked with it. I agree with trimming. I meditated long and hard with it before deciding to take the sheers to it. Best decision we ever made together (me and the deck 😉). Path working with it trimmed is indescribable.
I absolutely love your raw reaction to this deck. I dont own it and I dont particularly "care for it", if that makes sense but watching you get the feels over it has me thinking "I need this". I'm so happy for you - it seems like this was meant to come home to you.
Ahhhh how exciting! I purchased the Mary-el tarot a few months ago and have been obsessed ever since. Marie White even commented on one of my videos and I would be lying if I say I didn't scream a little bit. So lovely to watch you unbox this! Let us know how you get on with this deck. Blessings and happy reading!
I - LOVE - the Mary-El. So evocative. Each card pulls emotions out of you. I loved it enough I hav step copies. One I trimmed - the other I kept as is. Which gives the untrimmed deck the-“sacred” feeling and the other deck has the “working” feeling. Fabulous deck.
There is something drawing me towards this deck and yet I've always stopped myself from putting it on my wishlist because some of the images stir something up inside me in a bit of a disturbing way lol but I refuse to let it go. Now that I've seen your video I MUST have it and stir up that shit inside me and lay it bare. This has to be on my path for a reason too. Thanks so much for your videos, you helped me tremendously on my path to learning tarot and I am forever grateful. Beautiful shirt! :)
+WildMeeca666 I had my doubts about a few of the cards myself, but when you read the accompanying explanations in the books, it takes away some of the "scariness" of the cards and gives them such deeper meaning. Definitely worth getting! :)
Such a beautiful deck, isn't it? I've had mine for a few years and it's *still* somewhat intimidating. It may always be. It has definitely become my favourite deck for heavy duty work.... and for just learning. I think I could study the symbolism that this deck has for a really long time... and still be learning from it when I'm older and greyer. :)
I edited my original copy to almost oblivion...and now just ordered another original. I’ll probably be getting the new one too. It’s not my favorite deck...but it’s very provocative. Anyhow...I’d love you to do a new video of your thoughts now....and of the new deck when it comes out.
Hello Kelly-Ann. Just Discovered your channel not so long ago, and I must say that it stirred something up in me. Something i haven't felt for years! I wanna go back to studying and i want to Really dig into my witchy side again. I have had an on/off relationship to that side of my life. Know it sounds pretty Odd, but in the last couple of years i have sort of disconnected from all that in my life. Long story, but i've been rather out of it, seriously depressed and ill, so the emotional and spiritual surplus has been non existing. But After watching a couple of your videos i have been revisiting my old tarot decks Again and i just started crying. Not out of sadness, but out of joy bc all the things i learned years ago about the tarot not gone, and the decks had an almost friendly vibe when i lokkes at Them Again. Like they or something inside of me Werge saying 'everything is going to Be alright, nothing is lost, you still learned things eventhough you have been distant'. So thank you!
+Martine Camille Dupont Thank you so much for sharing this information about your journey. I am so glad that those tears of joy came. It seems that you are opening that door again and repatriating that lost but essential part of yourself. How wonderful, darling!
I'm so happy you have this deck! I must admit...you being so well versed in shadow work I thought you already had this! Very happy for you! U'll be trippin on this massive loving diverse deck 😍💋
Your so honest and on point ! Yes more diversity in tarot I agree! Loved your review, very strong deck of artistic expression and unique representation!
i just love emotionally connected you are getting over this deck! it is definitly on the rise lately! i really want this deck...i would trim the edges and use it as just the image like in soul cards!
+Samantha Ingland It seems as though a lot of people have done just that! :) I am terrified of trimming decks - the whole idea of it freaks me out! I am soooo left-handed and would probably just totally fuck it up, hahah!
You're a very generous person yourself, so I'm glad people have been gifting you decks. ;) I completely agree with you about how you can come to a stage in your tarot journey where you're ready for a very unconventional deck such as this one. I wasn't drawn to this deck at first because I felt it was too non-traditional for where I was at in my learning. I suddenly felt very drawn to work with this deck recently and now I have my copy waiting for a special occasion to unbox. I may do it on Periscope, maybe not. I hope I'm ready for it, it is a super deep and intense deck. Love!
I have so much respect for Marie White. I feel like I could almost be done collecting tarot at this point. haha! I think I might spend the next year with this one. I pulled the queen of discs one day, and then picked up another tarot companion book, and read something about crying diamonds. It was really a fun coincidence.. If I can find it I'll share it with you. I'm glad to see you've got this now! Seemed like a Kelly-Ann kind of deck.
Yaaaas omg. I learned Tarot on the Mary El and I am SO EXCITED to see you with this deck so I may expand my interpretations still! You are so beautiful thank you sweet tart
Woah, there is some intense images in there!!! By the way, it's really nice to chat you on periscope, hope to see you on there soon!! ;-) Looking at the queen of disks, i get this empathy, non judgemental open mindedness and security feeling with the tears sort of transforming and becoming beautiful diamonds and roots anchoring her securely to where she's at making her a safe haven.. Chuckled intensely at the "not a demon" note, hahaha!
OK, I need this deck. So many of the images resonate. My first thought with the Queen of Disks was one of sacrifice and yes it really does have a melancholic feel. Thought and memory too ... when I did my year ahead spread, I pulled out the Queen of Swords for May, which is my birth month. The whole year was swords and wands, very emotive and I just felt that the Queen represented me and The Mary El representation just brings a whole other level to it.
+Kelly-Ann Maddox Have you ever seen the Raven's Prophecy Tarot? I'd be interested on your thoughts. I have to say that the Lovers of this deck takes my breath away.
1. Please do go into Thought & Desire and it's placement in Mary El! Maybe in a future cardslinger you could chat about the Norse Myth & Pantheon and it's representation in Mary El! 2. The effects of the color palette in Mary El are extremely palpable and I realize that I have in fact heightened and nurtured my sense of color and it's dramatic effects on other senses (in dreams and other visionary states esp) through using this deck often. I've heard many people say it and I can vouch: Pay attention to your dreams when using this deck **
I loved this impression video; thank you for sharing! I also love diverse Tarot decks. The Herbal Tarot has representation of POC and also, all ages. :)
Hi Kelly Thank you so much for your post they are really a blessing!!! I have seen that there are T shirts and Posters from Mery El Tarot cards....and guess what the Emperor poster is available in Etsy....(not sure if they got the T Shirt)
Synchronicity. A bunch of us are doing the #WithinWithoutAdvice March DIG DEEP tarot with the Mary El :) as a way to start our journey with this deck, and some are trimming their Mary El :D Congrats on such a lovely gift. Have a blessed time exploring it :)
I spent last night trimming mine after debating for two months. LOL. I think I am going to do the challenge, too. Looking forward to connecting with everyone. So exciting. hehe!
+Marylin SoftThistle its an instagram challenge. but kelly also has made a facebook group called the truth in story & CO....check it out! its a fun tarot community :)
Love to hear you first impressions about one of my most favorite decks. You mention your relationship with mother Mary. perhaps you could talk about more it in another video?
+Ellen Weirdly, I was thinking about a video which explains this, and also one which goes into some of the other key goddesses that I love. Will do, honey! :)
OMG, I had never seen that deck before and it's BEAUTIFUL! I don't have many tarot decks (I only work with the Robin Wood) because I am sooooooooo fucking picky when it comes to artwork. Even the Robin Wood doesn't feel much like me anymore even though the artwork is very pretty. I've had an eye out for a while for a deck I can mesh with but so far I haven't had any luck. I have the H.R. Giger Tarot and I love it but it's only the major arcana and I don't work with it much because I don't want to mess it up (it's more of a collector item.) I definitely need something darker than the Robin Wood --- it's just not dark enough for me anymore. The Mary El looks like the perfect combination of dark/light and beautiful.
I've also had some powerful reactions to this deck, via people's reviews. But, I know that I'm not ready, and it's not the right time in my life for this deck. And that's really hard when you're a collector! 😅 But, until it is I'll feed my addiction by watching more beautiful reviews like yours! Thanks! 😘😊
+Brianna Vesper No, not a new journal - I just stick a new divider in my ring binder. I use a ring binder to record my thoughts on decks. That way I can keep everything together and, of course, keep adding to the notes as I go into more depth. Hope this helps. :)
What is your risings and moon sign ? You really inspire me four Queen ? You just feel so familiar you inspire my center my core you open me up more and I've been watching you for awhile and you need to know thank you
That deck looks so interesting! Definitely going to be a journey. If I may ask, how do you know when a deck is calling to you? I own three decks and felt super attracted to them, but don't know what it takes to actually connect with that astral force to be called by them. At first I thought if I liked the pictures and maybe got a few goosebumps while looking at them then that was it, but I got it from looking at this review, but don't feel that the deck would be right for me, so how would I know the difference? Are there any key feelings or thoughts you get when feeling that calling? (Only answer if you're comfortable with sharing - in no way do I mean to put pressure on you to answer)
Looooove this! K. I did an I boxing video (I actually have a handful) then got timid and never posted it. Maybe I'll post as a video response. Would that be cool with you?
I love your videos (and follow you on IG)and loved your thoughts on this deck. I have had it since last year and there are some images I adore and others I struggle with. I'm doing the #withinwithoutadvice challenge on Instagram and would LOVE seeing your perspective. I think this deck came to you just in time. 😄
Can't wait to hear more of your thoughts on racial diversity in decks. It is a topic I too could rant on and on about. I am bored with super white decks, and likewise frustrated by the token and stereotypical representations of people of color that pop up. However, you might be interested in a forthcoming deck called The Next World Tarot. The deck has a punk apocalyptic aesthetic and is made with the explicit intention of representing people of color and gender/sexual non-conforming people. I supported the creator's Kickstarter but even though the crowd funding campaign is over she has mentioned that she will be offering pre-sales on her site.
omg i'm so glad you addressed decks & the whiteness thing. what world are people living in? it's so unimaginative & mind-numbingly boring...diversity & brownness is head-spinningly stunning & super magickal across the board. thank goddess my own spirit tribe is deliciously interesting. great vid as always bb :)
So happy to hear someone else complain about the lack of diversity in so many tarot decks, it's such a sore spot for me!
+Kayla Rigsby For real!
Honestly I thought it was cause I've been single nearly a year that they seemed to stand out to me, lol! ;)
I trimmed mine this weekend and it's opened up the imagery even more for me. Fucking beautiful deck. ❤️
Marylin - SoftThistle Life 😊😊😊
The 2 ravens reminds me of The Morrighan. I felt that instant pull to that card. This may be a deck to put on my own wish list...
About the Queen of Discs, sometimes we grow massively from pain. It could be something like that. I know I have grown most in my life through deep emotional pain. Sending lots of love
+SafiOwns Truth! Good angle. I just find it weird that the guidebook didn't reflect that in the key words.. x
Your insights are terrific. And I adore your accent!
☺️😚😋
I am in love with your jacket. It's absolutely lovely. You have such an awesome fashion sense.
+chaserox5 Aww, thank you so much - it's from the sixties. :) I love love love those sixties prints and collars!
So many people in the tarot community seem to be discovering this deck right now, haha I'm one of them also.;) I ordered the Mary-El last week after seeing The Truth in Story's video about it. It should arrive tomorrow, I am soo excited!
Wildly creative, artistic deck. Love you enthusiasm.
The Mary-El Tarot is an amazing deck, I am so glad that you now have it. Thank you for sharing your first reactions to the deck.
Awesome!

I have a Schiffer deck and put a thin ribbon under the cards (stuck down) that is long enough to stick out and help pull them out. :-)

+Kelly-Ann Maddox Ooh that would be awesome.
So the Queen of Pentacles in this deck makes me think of the Darren Aronofski film Mother.
Thanks! 😘😊
I've been using The Mary-El tarot since last year and it is just amazing! Highly recommend it! And as always, much love
Wow. Saw it today and something called me to buy it and this video pops up. Incredible
When you go to absorb a new deck do you start a new journal for your thoughts and interpretations on that new deck?
+Brianna Vesper No, not a new journal - I just stick a new divider in my ring binder. I use a ring binder to record my thoughts on decks. That way I can keep everything together and, of course, keep adding to the notes as I go into more depth. Hope this helps. :)
What is your risings and moon sign ? You really inspire me four Queen ? You just feel so familiar you inspire my center my core you open me up more and I've been watching you for awhile and you need to know thank you
0:21 you have the box upside down, miss
ææ I just placed an order for the first edition and I am soooo excited 🤩😍🤩😍
Did they explain in the book why they chose different images?
I own 3 of Baba Studios deck all of them have an extra Lovers card :)
Mary El.. it will come to me sometime.. :)
One of my top 5.
OOOOH!!! I've been eyeing this deck FOREVER :P
Where is your wish list?
+Mirrors of Consciousness I read some of it out in my last Cardslinger video :D x
Yes, I remember... I thought you might also have an Amazon wishlist or something too :P
(and how generous are your fans?? so cool!)
How are you going with Merry El deck now?
Looooove this! K. I did an I boxing video (I actually have a handful) then got timid and never posted it. Maybe I'll post as a video response. Would that be cool with you?
I love your videos (and follow you on IG)and loved your thoughts on this deck. I have had it since last year and there are some images I adore and others I struggle with. I'm doing the #withinwithoutadvice challenge on Instagram and would LOVE seeing your perspective. I think this deck came to you just in time. 😄
The sticky gloss. How do you handle it?!
I very lightly sanded mine
What a beautiful beck.
