This video was super helpful! It's been a long time since I owned a horse and I was curious about the cost. Thank you so much for all the time and effort in putting this information together for us! You are amazing! Also, I just checked out your Etsy Shop! Wow! I absolutely love the shirts, especially the Christian-themed ones! God and horses! Nothin' better! ✝️
Thank you! I’m glad you like the shirts and the content ☺️
This was very good information but, would have been nice if at the end you could give a rough approximate total cost from the low side to the high side of monthly cost in owning say, an average size horse. Of course this would be with the understanding that those average costs can be more or less depending on where one is located and the horse it self. You have great videos. Keep up the great work!
Yes, sorry about that. Low side, I would say around $400; this is probably more feasible if you have your own property. High end is exponential, and really depends on the area.
I loveeeee your hair!!!❤
Thank you!
@ of course it suits you so well❤️
this will be helpful as i’m looking for my first horse/about how much it costs yearly! i usually look at your videos if i’m looking for something on horse owning😂
love the videos!❤
Thanks for your support! The state/region you live in will also influence a lot of these costs. The more expensive it is to live somewhere, the more expensive it will be to keep a horse. If you live in one of the midwestern or southern states, it’s a lot more reasonable to
Boarding stable 300 euro per month, every six weeks 55 farrier, ones a year a injection 95 euro, dentist 200 a year, dewormer 40 a year, saddle man 200 a year. Fysiotherapy 200a year, pellets 300 a year, so this is more fair , i give you my numbers too 😁 1 horse, the Netherlands p.s. forgetting all the saddle pads, bling bling, new thingies ... 500 a year 😮
It’s interesting hearing the numbers from Europe!
Carmella, this was really useful. I am looking for a Quarter Horse but, not guaranteed that I will get it but, it is just something that I am looking for. I love you all so much. It is still expensive owning a horse. I have never known this because I am a cow owner and owning a cow is also as same as owning a horse. I have more than 13 cows and I don't think I have space to keep a horse but I will see, wish me luck. I will support you all forever!
My cow named Swasthi is not looking good a little bit. She had a big, big wound. She was atleast walking, laying down and standing up before she went to the hospital. But, now that she went to the hospital, she cannot even stand up. She had a premature birth and the baby died in the hospital. And her old calf is fine but, I think that she has not seen her calf so, that is why I think she is getting weak. Thay are having to lift her using a machine for 2 hours. But, now she is doing good. All the best, be safe, be very careful and good luck. God bless to you and everyone ❤❤💙💙🐴🐴🐎🐎!!!!!! Before, were you keeping your horses at Self-board or what?
This was super helpful, thank you!
My horse at my property overall in the Midwest is around $225 a month (hay, vet, teeth, feet) assuming you have equipement for pasture maintenance. Pasture maintance around 150 a month. I also save 50 a month for insurance in a fund I never touch in case of an emergency vet situation.
Thats crazy! In Canada (BC) it costs around $730 for feed alone.
These seems more like how it is in Virginia too!
The video was so informative! Best advice ever! Thank you so much Carmella!
Love your videos every Friday morning when I get ready!
Hi! Can you do how much it costs to pre lease a horse in 2025?❤ I’m looking to pre lease one maybe in a couple months so❤
“Easy keepers” can actually cost you more, if they are insulin resistant, they can not have too much grass…..so you end up buying more hay.
Trims are a minimum of $50 where I live
Mares need to be checked too, they can accumulate “beans” inside their vagina so it costs the equivalent of a sheath cleaning if you pay someone to do it
Yes, this is true too!
After the calcul it’s 21% cheaper to have your horse at home, but that doesn’tinclude All the knowledge that you’ll probable for, that forant include training or the initial cost of the buying before anything else because That to variable. The standard deviation is about 10 000 for 20 years, that disent incluse thé mental stress or the routine from work that youll need to nail from having it at home, so you pay more or less 20% for a boarding stable for 20 years (the Time evaluation ) but that disent consider buying the home and Space for it etc.
I got one your sweatshirts for Christmas I’m asking my hubby for another for my birthday in March!! I’m also checking out a Quarter horse to buy tomorrow!!! ❤ 😅
Thank you for your support! I hope the horse shopping goes well!
Horses are more expensive than I thought
Living in AZ I pay approximately $16.00 a bale ..and been $ 65-40 for trims no shoes . every 6 weeks .getting a good ferrier is so hard . But be moving to Northern California hopefully things will be better . Paying $300 a year for shots vet comes once a year but hasn’t had sheath cleaning or floating.
I have read prices can get high in Arizona. I am interested to see what it’s like once we get there!
I use leafs for bedding, Ritchie automatic waterer the best
I’ve heard about this! I will have to look into that!
This will be interesting to watch! (first)
we need arabic subtitles!! love u 💗
Eastern Canada: bought my western school horse (trained to level 2) when he got retired 5000$. A 19 year old quarter horse. Bought his second-hand saddle and bit 250$. Annual vet check (all shots, xrays, teeth) 660$. 60$/month for feed and supplements. Basic outdoor board 400$ to 700$ including hay.
Fly mask and spray 400$ a year 😅
Those prices seem pretty standard with some parts of America!
I'm moving my 23 yr old horse to pasture board, I live in Ohio. The place checks all the boxes but I'm used to having a stall, I hope I'm doing the right thing..
Best wishes! Pasture board may help your horse maintain soundness and flexibility in their older age. I hope it all goes well!
I paid 85 dollars 💸 a month to board my thourobred in 1979. That included feed stall and pasture and trails. It's insane how much board has gone up. Horse's were for poor people, now of course they took that away as well 🙄 😠 😡 😤 😣
All the prices you stated are FAR MORE in Florida!
I pay over $1000/month to board and it’s not a nice place, no indoor nothing fancy and very little turnout and no access to trails
I noticed that when we were staying there this winter; much more expensive than Virginia, and I consider Virginia in the middle finance wise
Round bales average 750-1000 lbs. They are not 2000lb.
Prices vary a lot depending on quality and variety. Round bales may not be recommended if you don’t have enough horses to go through the bake quickly. Mold is an issue. I live in Louisiana and would never feed round anything to my 3 mares. They go through 1 50 lb square bale of high quality jiggs Bermuda each day. They each get 4 lbs pellets each day. They are not in work.
Bottom line…. Horses aren’t cheap but they are priceless!!!!
Oops, my bad 🤪, and ain’t that the truth!
Yeah I spend nearly $300/month for one horse's feed and supplements to keep her healthy. Hay is in cost of board (outside 24/7) at $400/month. EASILY spending $15k/year on basic care (adding basic vet, farrier, blanketing). No horse shows, no fancy tack... that's all extra.
Out of curiosity, where are you located?
@CarmellaAbel upper midwest USA .
My horse is insulin-resistant and needs very expensive feed and medicine.
People who board with stalls are easily $700/month. So I save money by pasture board fulltime (with grazing muzzle).
Wow, your costs are very low. I live in southern WI. & most things are a lot more expensive. For example, a sheath cleaning is $91 & a hoof trims are $60. I probably spend more like $6000 a year to own my horse & I’m not at all lavish!
My costs are an average of the USA; it differs by region. It’s a lot more affordable in some states than others; pretty crazy!
Same, a trim here in Central IL is 65. I think fronts are 150 and full is 180 for shoes. It ranges so much!
Take away. Let’s ditch our cars and go back to horses. 😉
Very very very expensive, guys get a dog
