Shell used to sell seashells before oil.
Dominoes, Ready for You by Ren.
Aesop Rock - Jazz Hands or Dorks
Day 8 of requesting trapped in a nightmare by neffex
Knox, att 8:44 you picked-up on 'ladder' in the money game, with the "Who Wants to be a Millionaire" visual, but you missed a UK-centric bombshell. The guy portrayed on the still cheated on set to win the million Pounds, by having someone in the audiance coughing the answers. What makes it even more scandalous is that the guy was an Officer in the British Army -- a class of person oft regarded as beyond reproach!
Edit to add: At 13:57, "tell lies out the gate", most certainly refers to Watergate, and the multitude of ****gate's that we have experienced since Tricky Dicky made it a political norm.
Fun fact: Shell Oil literally sold sea shells for years before expanding to oil.
Yes! This fact blew my mind when someone pointed it out somewhere, I think it was under the music video Knox is watching here. Well, kinda. I had googled where the name comes from, but it had been a while and I had forgotten.
Something I found out recently, the tounge twister she sells sea shells is about an actual person. Mary Anning sold shells and fossils to make end meet in the south of England but went on to become probably the top expert of fossils but because she was a woman she didn't get the recognition she deserved but even the top academics of the time would go to her for advice
Some of the largest corporations and conglomerates have the craziest origin stories. The Food/Toys That Built America is a great series.
I never knew that, ren did though id say
Came to comment exactly this! Lol
Just noticed one more thing: "why just shells? Why limit your self? She sells seashells, sell oil as well!" ...
The Shell oil company started as a seller for decorative seashells... Ren is such a smart lyrical genius!
As Ren has said: "I love this guy - he gets EVERYTHING."
Nailed it again - respect.
252 likes and no comments? Let me fix that
Oui il est vraiment excellent decripte chaque mots qu'elle culture Knox 2 genies Ren est un extraterrestre 😮👍👏🙏💖
Money game part 2 is a low key masterpiece
Yeah! And he mentions it in his other masterpiece, Hi Ren. The "bad" side mocking the "good" side, saying "We've heard it all before / Oh, 'She sells sea shells on the sea shore'".
Shame it majorly ended up as a meme and never got the sincere appreciation for how much of a great song it really is
@Zinetha also in Sick Boii, talking about comoditizing everything, including ourselves.
Part one is better imo
High key IMHO. ❤
I am suprised no one has noticed Charlie Chaplin's The Great Dictator. It is one of his best roles and has one of the greatest monologues in film history. I highly recommend everyone watch it.
I did. But looks too much like the inspiration(s) behind it for that many people to notice or point it out 😏
I absolutely love "The greatest speech ever made" from The Dictator. I share it on my FB page every year or so because the message is so relevant and rousing even after all these years
I think this song was one of the first ones that made him more popular and that's why in "Hi Ren" the "evil" Ren is mocking him with the line "She sells sea shells at the sea shore".
When this song came out was the first time I discovered Ren too
💥🤯🔥
Which is a segway to 8. Mile movie with Eminem
@@marusak72 this is exactly how i found both of these things. i found a video of this song over the top of the last rap battle in 8 mile. it was sick
Fun fact: during the "money is the game and the ladder we climb" part where it has the Who Wants to be a Millionaire also connects with the "turns a saint in to a sinner" part because that particular contestant was the first one to cheat their way to the million pound mark. It was a big ol' thing over here in the UK, i'm sure you can google the whole thing
*cough*
@@nickharrison1604 *cough* NO!
The Who Wants to be a Millionaire scene 8:44 features Charles Ingram who cheated his way to the £1 million prize. A former British army major, he was prosecuted for deception and forced to resign his military commission.
Wow. You really get the picture of what happened when you read these comments.
Knox, it's pretty impressive how informed about British culture and politics you are. Most Americans barely seem to know what's going on in their own state. Plus your breakdowns are always on point. You earned a Limey's sub.👍
Same! He's done it with some of Ren's other songs too. Like knowing that "trainers" are "sneakers" in hungry. Lots of the American reactors miss some of the British slang that often really make ren's bars hit even harder. He hasn't missed a thing in any of his Ren reactions yet! 👏
This!!!
oui il est très cultivé tout comme REN wouahhhh impressionnant je me suis abonnée 💖🙏👏👍🇫🇷
If I’m correct, he spent some time living in the U.K., which is why he knows as much as he does
Don't make the mistake of assuming people in America are like minded as social media or media in general would have you believe lol
Dawg!!! from an old Hip Hop Head from 80's Boston I can not find a bad song from this kid!!!!!!!!!!!!! Dominates my play list right now.
Same! And I'm a metalhead from Finland in my early 30s! He has such a diverse fan base it's insane.
Same. Metal head 38 years old from Ohio. I fucking love Ren.
I'll jump on this bandwagon. Forty-seven-year-old (boy it hurts to see that typed there!) metal head here are this dude has got me excited about future music. I even put myself on his waiting list for his CDs and snapped up the full collection when it came available. A great talent that needs to inspire artists to get back to true music making without all the fakery and posturing.
Mate, a Rock / Metal old fart here from across the" Pond", totally agree! Music is so emotive, Ren is awesome!
There's a nice cross-reference to "She sells sea shells" in 'Hi Ren', as well. Most folks probably missed it if they heard Hi Ren before Money Game, Part 2.
I think most heard it but didn't get the connection to this song and just assumed it was a reference to the tongue twister.
I noticed this as well the first time I heard lol❤😂 this guy 🤯🤯🤯
This channel is so great and rap is not my favorite but Knox is so intelligent and interesting to listen to. And he’s respectful of all types of music I’m discovering. This is a GREAT song, I love Ren.
(The only American reactor I’ve heard who knew 10 Downing Street, Bronson, etc.)
Yes! My husband and I picked up the Bronson, and I've waited for someone to get it, and no other reactor has.
+
Literally had no idea there was a Charles Bronson film.
Agreed! I got here via Metal Mondays and because of this channel and Hi Ren, I'm starting to love rap (almost) as much as metal.
💯💯💯💯💯💯💯
So, I'm listening to Ren thinking "God, he's smart!" Then Knox pops in with analysis and I think "God, HE'S smart!" I used to think I was smart... well, I guess, if I'm still learning from you guys I AM smart, right? Thanks for another great one, Knox. I hope you had a good date with the missus.
Yeah, I knew Knox could analyse a song, but didn't expect him to be aware of UK politics or understand the communist/socialist arguments against capitalism.
I really need to actually dig in to his music at some point since he claims he's had political themes in his songs.
@@nathandts3401 Know knows a lot about a lot. I don't know his educational background, but he clearly is a reader.
I get it. But I'll bet there is at least one topic that you could be "the smart one" about, right? :Maybe not in a room of experts (or maybe so), but with the right audience and the right messaging, you could be the one that makes me say, "God she's smart." That's what's so cool about people; everyone has something to share, none of us know everything, but mash us all together and we know an unimaginable amount of stuff.
@@icudbNE1 Wibbly wobbly timey wimey stuff? 🙂
Ren has made it up the ladder to being in my top three favorite artists currently.
Thank you for giving him the love and respect that he deserves and as always thanks for breaking down the bars better than anyone
who are the other two?
@@TheInnerSession Yeah, I can't think of anyone in the past 70 years who has impacted me more than Ren. If there are two others comparable I want to know.
Who is better than Ren? I haven't seen anyone touch him as far as talent in any form. I like Tom.Mac , but he would have to step a side to reign in a man that blows him away. Tom is a yr or 2 older but Ren's stuff goes way back as well. He was out with his band busking and doing videos's while singing top notch, guitar monster and rapping when he felt like it and crushed it.
@@patrickquinlan3056Eyedea is a rapper that's still my favourite artist and I'm a rock/metal guy mainly.
The purest emotion you're going to hear from any musician and his life was cut tragically short. Seeing a man pour out his soul on a track about having to euthanise his dog is something that changes your entire view on what art is.
@@nathandts3401 Before Ren I hated rap so another rapper is not going to really impress me especially when he sounds to me like most other rappers. The beauty of Ren is that he is incomparable. The only artist who impacted me in any way remotely like Ren was Syd Barrett but he fell victim to extreme mental health issues so his potential was never realized except through what Pink Floyd became without him.
I don't know rap well enough to judge Eyedea's music but the two tracks I listened to of his did not really impact me. I shall have to reserve any judgement until I become more acquainted with this genre.
Brilliant reaction Knox 👍 The father of the Shell Oil corporation started selling shells in the late 1800s. Conch shells you could hear the sea held to your ear. Everyone wanted them and the bigger the more expensive. By 1930 his sons started buying oil and selling petroleum and made a fortune.
Have a great weekend with the wife and Happy birthday 🎂 to her.
Best reactor on RUclips 👍👍👍👍
Great breakdown as always, just wanted to add because I don't know if you realized it: the 'she sells seashells' bit is referenced in Hi Ren when 'dark Ren' is mocking the other one by referencing one of his songs.
Was about to post this 😊
I thought he would spot that too. x
Yes! Couple weeks after digesting Hi Ren, I listened to all his other discography and noticed this as well.
'Ren we heard it all before...'
There are so many reactors out there who never get all the economic and political connections in this song. I love your amazing, educated breakdowns! Hope your wife has a great Birthday!
Just want to share this.... The most beautiful thing I've seen here on RUclips is the moment and feeling you shared about feeling so happy that you made Ren smile on his birthday! That moment was so honest and genuine. 💙
I came to and subscribed to your channel due to the Ren videos. Since then I have come to realize you are one of the smartest reactors out there. Your knowledge of history, culture, music, language, economics, psychology, sociology, global and current events, among other topics is very impressive. The world needs more smart and insightful people like you and Ren.
As an aside, "She sells sea shells" nursery rhyme was apparently a reference to Mary Anning, a female fossil collector from the 1800s. Ren also calls back to it in Hi Ren when his shadow/dark side is telling him he's not original.
Dinos be rare, next step when?
Rens range is unmatched. He's the most creative and diverse artist I've heard in a while. Knox your a legend for catching every single damn thing!
My dude! Thank you for being an artist that isn't a money grubbing ass hat. Charismatic Voice led me to Ren, which led me to your content. Don't sell yourself short my brother. You are a lyrical monster. Stay political. Make your voice heard. Independent artists and thinkers will change our world for the better!
I love Charismatic Voice but for me Justin Hawkins led me to Ren which led me here 😊 the Web of RUclips reactions can be very interwoven and I'm here for it
🔥🔥🔥👌🏼 Your general & cultural knowledge makes your reactions sooo good!!! Do you EVER forget anything? 😂🤣 Great Ren tune, been waiting for you to react to this and didn’t disappoint. Cheers!
The whole she sells sea shells scheme is honestly one of the finest lyrical acrobatics i've ever heard, i genuinely think it's massively slept on. It's so clever not only in the scheme itself, but the message behind it, i think its possibly one of Ren's most brilliant verses.
Yes
Q. You want Ren? You want the best breakdown humanly possible?
A. You want Knox Hill
Impressed how aware you are of UK politics.
You are so good describing Ren's videos because he is deep and it takes a real, trurhful, deep observer to translate. Your awesome dude for being clean and also educated yourself. Thanks man! Love you Ren!!!
Have a great birthday with your wife 🎉
Thanks for yet another great Ren reaction 🫶🏻
It thrills me to watch you reacting to Ren!!!!! Not that I don't enjoy watching reactions to others. It's the excitement & awe that we all feel about his work. He's authentic! I think when you are reacting you seem completely authentic in your excitement! Love seeing ppl completely invested in anything that they love.
Fun fact #2: Knox is the shit!
Undeniable break down skills and spitting true knowledge!
Ren did his research with this one. Shell Oil Co. started out selling shells.
The way Ren's lyrics blend with the visuals of his video are a masterwork. Beauty. Facts.
Excellent reaction. Loved your analysis and commentary. Sometimes I learn things from you. Most times you just confirm my own beliefs 🫶🏻.
This is the song that introduced me to Ren. My 14yr old son shared it with me (proud mom moment 😉). Then I heard Hi Ren and I was completely hooked on this artist. Have not been disappointed with anything I have seen from Ren. I have nothing but respect and prayers for him. ✌🏻🙏🏻❤️
Happy Birthday to your wife! And thanks for yall you do man!
Shell started out selling sea shells before diversifying into oil. Ren knows his shit.
I reckon knox could breakdown the phone book and I'd still watch it and love it 😂 😂
😂 rite.
Holy shit! Not only do I agree, I just realized that I cannot remember the last time I actually saw a physical phone book.
Ren taught us history in money game pt 1 and economics in pt 2 and in the Hunger, he said he teaches over beats. :-)
Knox’s reactions amaze me with the depth of his knowledge and his attention to detail-his breakdowns are unmatched imho ❤
This is where the lyric from Hi Ren comes from: Ren, mate, we've heard it all before. (mockingly) "Ugh, she sells seashells by the seashore."
Love this one!! And yes, Ren is special 🥰
Fantastic reaction. Your knowledge of pop culture, world history and economics is impressive. You really found everything in this song.
Mary Anning (1799-1847) was an English paleontologist, fossil collector, and dealer who became known around the world for the discoveries she made in Jurassic marine fossil beds along the English Channel at Lyme Regis in Dorset, Southwest England.0 Her contributions to paleontology are now receiving their due and she is now remembered for her schoolyard tongue twister "She Sells Seashells".
I love the consistency on Ren's work, constantly referencing Great Britain, his home country. I thought I already knew a bunch of stuff about the country, since British authors are my favourite, my favourite tv show ever is The Skins, etc, but he's constantly proving me wrong. I love it.
Here it is, the song with which I discovered Ren. Been waiting for this ever since Knox started reacting to him! 🤩
Comment for the algo. You know we love the kid. 🔥
What a thoughtful and intelligent reaction and breakdown. I love Ren because he is so talented and inventive but so thought provoking. You always do such a wonderful job of not only noticing the little things in the music but in the lyrics and meaning as well. One of my favorite reactors for this very reason. Love it.
Yo man, hope you missus has an awesome bday, big love to the knox family ♥, so excited for you to break down his sea shell analogy
The "sell time to a clock" line is deep as well as funny. There's a saying with some truth in it that 'man is the measure of all things' and in a certain sense we don't have time, we are time, yet taking time for ourselves/ away from work is an opportunity cost, hence selling time to a clock.
There's a false scarcity of time. That is the very root of the problem.
Love your UK knowledge man, you’re clearly well educated and not just another copy and paste RUclipsr, keep up the good work
Thank you ! I absolutely love watching you! Happy birthday to you're wife .. Ren certainly is opening the minds isn't he.. I hope Ren can keep growing he deserves it.. much love and respect knox
The breadth of your knowledge never ceases to amaze me, Knox, keep it up, chap, much needed!
Trip this: Ren is following a lot of the elements he mentions in pushing his own music, BUT he's also turning it on it's head because he's intentionally doing it in a way that doesn't exploit others--he's created a symbiotic relationship between himself and reactors with the goal of raising *all* boats, not just his own. And it is working admirably.
God, this song was used for so many memes, the part of "She sells sea shells on the seafloor" there're many videos of Luigi rapping that part 😂
But yeah, this song it's really good and great analysis Knox
Well that explains all the comments under the music video...
I was waiting for the second part for a while now ❤️❤️🔥🔥
Was waiting for this one. "sell water to a fish, sell time to a clock"
it amazes me how you get literally every reference and bar. makes the reactions really entertaining and insightful. keep it up man you're killing it.
Yes! It's one of my favorites of his! I've been waiting for your reaction!
You missed Charley Chaplin at the end.. It's a scene from the movie "The Great Dictator". The speech he holds is epic...
Great reaction,Thanks Knox ❤
It’s so refreshing how informed and knowledgeable you are! I found your channel via Ren and watching your content is totally worth my time.
Oh, man-I have been so eagerly awaiting this reaction! Knox, you’re my absolute favorite because you understand and explain the music production aspect, catch all the lyrics and visuals, and are well-read and well-rounded enough to understand the references.
Watching your channel has opened up and deepened my appreciation of different artists (like yourself!) and genres, and I am so grateful for your time and content.
Yo, I am really starting to feel Ren.
Legit haven't found a bad Ren song yet
Welcome to the cult 😊😎🤪
Welcome to the genre fluid Renaissance.
@@vegasviking86 With the way he switches genres, you're bound to find something you don't like, but he pretty much caters to everyone by being so eclectic.
@@jhoop842 I mean bad and good are subjective either way so if you personally don't like something then it's bad to you.
That being said, I've not heard a song I don't like from Ren. I'm not a huge fan of braggy rap so Illest isn't one of my favourites, but he still had all the interesting subtext about his literal illnesses so I still like it.
Thank you that was amazing reaction ❤❤
You're one of the few reactors I click the like button before it's started, just in case I forget at the end! And Knox plus Ren - it's a no-brainer! You and your wife have a good weekend man.
You really do catch everything. Lyrics, production, and even the visuals too. Your brain is working fast for this! Very impressive. And lovely to see how much you like Ren too. He really is special.
Holy !@#$, Knox you are a savage on breaking these songs down! I’ve been watching now since I went down the Ren rabbit hole of music. this kid is something special, also throwing you some love as I’ve been watch your content also. Keep doing want your doing lifting each other up and not each other tearing down! Faith, Hope & Love will bering us together if we let it!
Hit em like bronson- also bronson was, I believe, a hit man, performing 'hits' (I just rewatched that part and knox does say that). A dictator would also want to hire hitmen to take out people who opposed them, which becomes more relevant the further into the song you get
Happy birthday to your wife, enjoy with your family Knox, love your reactions and your music, just listened to INNER CIRCLE, it's absolute 🔥🔥🔥, much love from India❤️❤️
Finally a reaction on part 2 been waiting this for a long time now
You nailed it, man. Best reaction to this song so far!
Always love your reactions - you always point out things I haven't noticed e.g. the gun being cocked (around the American Dad/America reference) and the coins falling (UK Govt). I also like the fact that you and Ren both referenced ladders while all the time there was a ladder behind you. Are you subliminally advertising your ladder sales business ??
😂 I was curious about the ladder too.
@@ianhislop6782 it's been there for a while. And that cool hat, too, which I lowkey want for myself, even though I hate caps (on myself. They suit Knox, though).
Knox, over last few weeks I've been investigating loads of RUclips reactionists to see how his art & craft is being received on both sides of the pond. Your reactions to Money Game prt 1 & 2 have been "the most accurately incitefull & eloquently explained" of them all! Nobody else has studied the lyrics of these songs in such depth & explained them so well 😊. I will be exploring your posts again as & when I have the time & also checking out some of your own work ok 🙂
Best breakdowns in the business with great knowledge. KNOX ROCKS 💯🤘
Just want to thank you for what you do. Love how well you can break down meanings, concepts, and metaphors to better understand the artist’s message.
Happy birthday to your wife!
And nice work on your new songs, both you and Ren! Listened to both on my way to work this morning. 😊
Brilliant reaction! Thank you. This was my first intro to Ren and It’s so great to see someone else ‘get it’ as much :-) I can see why Ren agreed to an interview with you. Gonna search your reaction to sick boi now ;-)
Yes! Love your Ren breakdowns ❤
Your reactions are always top Tier. Keep doing what you do!
As always - LOVE your reaction/breakdown; I definitely listen to things differently after having watched a few of your reaction videos. However.......I've been waiting for you to do Money Game part 2 to see if you'd catch one specific thing. This video came out some time ago, before Ren talked (sang?) about "She sells sea shells..." in Hi Ren. Love the way he references his other stuff in each song.
I found this channel bc Knox Hill was doing reaction videos to Ren and subscribed because of Knox Hill’s deep dives and intelligent commentary of so many topics. Ren’s music helped me through some dark times last year. Now I can’t wait to tap into the music Knox Hill is making as well. Thanks so much for putting out this content.
Knox - thanks for being one of the most thoughtful and intelligent reactors out there. Love it!
I have to say, your reactions are made so much more wonderful and insightful by your cultural knowledge and understanding. So many people dont know a thing about any history or news outside of the us and your understanding and knowledge is fantastic. Incredibly insightful
I know that this is an old video, and you probably don't check it anymore. Thank you for what you do. You're one of my top people I come to when I want to see how people react to music. It's not just that, but the way that you really SEE things, what most people miss. For you it's not just about listening, but the layers and WHY of something. You think quick, have no problem looking at something again, and give your honest opinion on something. So thank you again, I love watching your videos. Through you I've not only found new people with amazing music, but have someone to go to when I want to see if anyone else catches something most people don't. Keep being amazing and doing what you love. That includes your music!
Was waiting for this ☝️!!!love it!
I just love when you go in full analysis mode. Those are the best reactions. 😊
Love your reactions and how you never miss a bar. I need to hear you break down Ren love music parts 1, 2 and 3 😂
Your breakdowns are superb, always interesting and informative and never condescending. I found your channel with your first REN react and subbed right away. No plans to go anywhere this channel is 🔥
As Ren himself said "Knox catches everything"
Knox, I entered your rabbit hole (ooh-err) about a week ago and I've since watched loads of your vids. Music is a huge part of my life, but I've got zero skill in being able to dissect and analyse it. I know what I love but I have no idea of the why... I'm in my late 30s and thanks to watching your videos, I'm finally starting to undersrand the 'why'. Not only that but you blow my mind with your scope of knowledge. Im a brit and your references to british music/politics is amazing. Im now a subscriber and life-long fan. Thanks mate!
👏 another brilliant reaction!❤
you sir are the best reaction creator sending love from the UK ❤
FANTASTIC reaction. Knox, you're amazing.
Great reaction video! Loved your insights and observations - thank you for sharing.
Insightful and technically-fascinating as always. I've listened to this one so many times and hadn't noticed some of the little vocal/beats that you pointed out. Love your reactions for teaching me to listen more attentively and understand the mechanics of the music and choices made to create it. We're all pupils at the school of hard Knox, and this year's curriculum is Ren!
Knox, This is my favorite breakdown you've done...
Happy Birthday to the Missus!!! Loving your content today thank you.
Well said Knox. I really appreciate your perspective, always find things to learn from. Money game series is Ren's best work, just amazing
Ren is right - you do catch everything! !!! ! I've seen this video so many times and still missed so much - the connection between American and British Apprentice - that was great! Great reaction and thoughts on the issues!
The "She sells seashells by the sea shore" is also a callback in "Hi Ren"
incredible review very impressed by your British knowledge as a Brit who visited the US every 6 months for 20 years -masterful Knox!
