1984 is one of the most entertaining years for cinema: Footloose, Ghostbusters, Terminator, Karate Kid, Gremlins, NeverEnding Story, Temple of Doom, Beverly Hills Cop, This Is Spinal Tap, Romancing the Stone, Nightmare on Elm Street, Splash, The Natural, Red Dawn, Last Starfighter, Sixteen Candles, Top Secret, Purple Rain, Amadeus, Once Upon a Time in America, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, etc...

I vote for her to watch Red Dawn, 16 Candles, Pretty in Pink, and since she loved Footloose, I think Girls Just Want To Have Fun with Sarah Jessica Parker and Helen Hunt as two Catholic school girls who want to be on an MTV-like music countdown show as dancers. It's got it all - strict military father, wild best friend, an I Hate You romance, fun 80s music, a dance competition, everything. Not sure if The Last Starfighter is her cuppa, but if it's not, she could sub it with Valley Girl with Nicholas Cage or something 90s like Buffy the Vampire Slayer

@2:54 leg warmers were originally meant for dancers and gymnasts. They are meant to keep the leg muscles warm to prevent cramping and muscle injuries. However, they became a huge fashion trend in the 80's once the movies _Fame_ and _Flashdance_ came out.

This movie was based on a true story about the small town of Elmore City here in Oklahoma. There was an city ordinance that banned dancing in the city limits. The high school seniors wanted a prom so they got the city to change the ordinance to allow dancing in 1980.

One interpretation of Ariel's character is that she's passively suicidal. She's not at a point where she's actively trying to kill herself, but she puts herself in dangerous situations when she feels depressed or isolated because she doesn't really care if she dies.

I was in middle school when this movie came out and it was *massively* popular. The soundtrack was the number one album for about twelve weeks and the songs were on the charts for most of the year. Two number one songs, three top ten songs, and another three top 40 songs. This was the same year that Purple Rain came out, and it spent 24 weeks at number one-along with spawning multiple number one singles. So this was a big year for soundtracks.
I attended a private Christian K-12 school in the south that made you sign a form saying you wouldn't listen to pop music, dance (including ballet), play video games, etc. If anyone from the school caught you doing any of that, even off school property on weekends, you would be expelled. The same applied to their college as well-and still does to this day.

John Lithgow elevated this material. He's always been great at making his performance sync perfectly with the type of show he's in. And he can play absolutely anything: drama, comedy, villains. Usually, a religious antagonist in the movies is just hissable and despicable, like in _The Mist_ or _Red State._ But Lithgow's performance in this movie makes Reverend Moore human and relatable. He's just one of the greatest actors ever, and I hope you check out more of his work, like _Cliffhanger, Ricochet, Harry and the Hendersons, Twilight Zone: The Movie, Bombshell,_ etc.

Ashleigh: "What was the purpose of legwarmers? I need y'all from the 80s to explain that to me."
Me: Okay, 80s guy here, graduated high school the same year FOOTLOOSE came out (1984). The purpose of legwarmers was... well, um... warming the legs.
    **crickets**
Originally, legwarmers were worn by dancers to keep their muscles from cramping after stretching. In the early 1980s legwarmers became a fad after David Lee and Trisha Kate opened a dancewear shop in the East Village, New York. They mainly sold legwarmers. Wearing them was fashionable among teenage girls; later to be an adopted fashion by boys in the city of Berkeley in the San Francisco Bay Area. Their popularity was partly due to the influence of the films FAME (1980), XANADU (1979), and FLASHDANCE (1983), as well as the concurrent aerobics exercise craze. They were worn with leggings, jeans, and tights or as part of aerobic wear.

@@86forever Actually professional dancers (and dance students) were the first to wear them, and still do, since they serve a practical purpose for them. But the aerobics craze of the 80s also had a lot to do with it, since they're helpful after a vigorous aerobics workout, and aerobics classes had exploded in popularity during that period.

23:25 the guy doing the “robot” is actually breakdancing. We called it “Poppin’-n-Lockin” back in the day. Breakdancing became big in the early 80’s and fizzled out in the mid 80’s. Breaking never truly went away. It just went back underground and slowly re-emerged slowly over time but without the hype.

There was a game called The Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon. It basically says that any actor you can name can be connected to Kevin Bacon through their co-stars. For instance let say Gene Wilder.
Gene Wilder was in The Frisco Kid with Harrison Ford.
Harrison Ford was in Presumed Innocent with Bonnie Bedelia.
Bonnie Bedelia was in Die Hard with Bruce Willis.
Bruce Willis was in Death Becomes Her with Meryl Streep.

_Footloose_ was one of my mother’s favorite movies. I kind of feel like she’s here with me again when I see it these days.
One of the reasons why _Footloose_ is great is because it reminds us of what an all-around awesome actor John Lithgow is. Now, he’s known for his comedy, but he’s a pretty damn good dramatic actor.
Here’s what I’ve heard about male friendships vs. female friendships. Men disagree, then get into a knock-down, drag-out fight. Five minutes later, they’re chums and planning prime hang-out time. Women disagree, say mean things about each other, and they hang onto those slights for decades. Of course, I can only speak from the male perspective.
Yes, Ashleigh, there were places (and I suspect there still are) that forbade dancing because they viewed it as the gateway to sin and damnation.
I love the tractor chicken scene. It’s all the more funny because Ren would’ve bailed out a lot sooner had his shoelace not been caught on the accelerator.
Nice Freudian slip there with “palm,” Ashleigh.
Ariel’s mother is played by Dianne Wiest. You might remember her as the mother of the main characters in _The Lost Boys._
The reason why Ariel does all these crazy things is she’s still dealing with her trauma. Much like the Reverend, she can’t come to terms with what happened, so she’s acting out by rebelling and putting her own life on the line to figure out how she feels.
Ren teaching Willard how to dance is another great montage set to a catchy 80s tune.
This movie has some heavy religious and family overtones. It’s interesting to watch it with someone who’s been through similar experiences.
Yeah, the kids all of the sudden being fantastic dancers came out of left field.
I also love this one a lot more than _Dirty Dancing._
If you want to see more young SJP, look up the TV show _Square Pegs._ I think it only ran one season, and she was one of the leads. I’ll leave the twist of the series regarding SJP up to you to find out.

So funny story, my hubby saw your Dirty Dancing reaction a few weeks ago and laughed so hard he sent it to me. We have since been on a Millennial Movie Ashleigh reaction marathon. Hubby hopped around, but I went and started watching in upload order (for full/proper effect). My top three so far are Exorcist, Fried Green Tomatoes and The Hubbins Vids (Pretty Woman/Titanic tied for 3rd). We have watched almost your ENTIRE catalog and had a full circle moment when watching Guardians of the Galaxy and you mentioned you would be reacting to Dirty Dancing in the next upload. Its hard to believe its only been a few weeks, as we feel we got to spend a few years with you, one upload at a time. You are SO much fun to watch and hang out with. This was IT for me and my sister when it came out. We watched it daily and wore out the soundtrack cassette. We loved how dramatic Ariel was and often imitated her- especially the shoulders up/shoulders down on the dress. As for the legwarmers, I was a ballerina and wore them to keep my ankles warm for dance class. How that translated to an 80's trend? Who knows, probably influenced by all these dance movies and TV shows like Fame and Flashdance. Sidenote Ren's mom was also the mom in Gremlins and Scream, the Rev's wife was in Lost Boys and Birdcage, and Willard is Sean Penn's brother who really couldn't dance but he was a wrestler so they tried to work with that. Lithgow is always amazing and references many of his movies in 3rd Rock from the Sun.

Now that you have seen Dirty Dancing and Footloose, you need to see Flashdance to complete the 80s dance movie trifecta.
There is also Fame, but that really is a different animal than the other three. Those three are more crowdpleasing and accessible. Fame is a gritter, more realistic look on the uphill battle that young people who want to get into the performing arts face. It's not all dancing the streets (although there is the one iconic scene with the title song), but a lot of it is downbeat and depressing. Having said that, it is a great movie and one that is really worth watching. Just know that you won't walk away with the same "I wanna get out and dance" feeling as the other three. It's more of a "wow! You gotta respect the people who take this chance and put themselves through such an ordeal" feeling.

Chris Penn, Lori Singer, Dianne Wiest, Sarah Jessica Parker, and John Lithgow all give incredible performances. I'm an 80's baby and I love 80's movies and 90's.
I always come back to them and re-watch.
Some of them that are my favorite just never get old.
But I have a large appreciation for evwn older classic films back in my mothers and Grandmothers time.
Even several black and white films.
And I prefer Olde musicals than any of today's musicals.
My top 3 favorites are 7 brides for 7 brothers, Oklahoma, Sound of Music.
I would live to see you do a reaction to all 3 of these movies in that order.
I grew up in theater and took dance classes, jazz, tap, ballet, ballroom dancing.
I'm also a Southern belle from Alabama.
And I grew up in a Baptist Church and the music I grew up on was alot of Southern Gospel and Country music.
Bit my mother also loved some rock n roll and so did her brother and my Grandmother also liked some of it.
We were all big Elvis Presley fans as well.
Everyone in my family is singers and musicians.
I even have some family who got into the music buisness.
Some of them singers song writers.
Even both my grandparents and great grandmother was also a singer song writer and she played the piano and sang in church.
And I'm into many genres of music.
So I cannot relate to what it was like for this girl in this movie growing up in a town where you can't dance or listen to certain kind of music.
Because my family often through parties with live bands.
And sometime my Uncles band would play and I would sing.
We just had alot of fun.
    Alot of good clean fun.
We all had Christian values and lived within God's boundaries.
Bit it's not like we were a bunch of stiff necks so to speak like the girls father.
My mama and Gran even knew how to have a good time.
    No matter their age.
And sometimes some of the family who had motorcycles got together for motorcycle trips.
Even my mother and Uncle had a motorcycle.
And sometimes I rode with my mother on her motorcycle and my Grandmother ride with Uncle or sometimes with her brother on either of theirs.
Mama, Uncle Billy and I also had horses.
And mama and I for fun use to compete against each other in barrel racing.
I had a very cool mother and family.
I did not live a sheltered life.
But bad thing did happen to me as a child that forced me to grow up fast so I was always very mature even when I was a child.
Also, one thing my mother wanted to do was raise me to be street wise and not be so naive. She didn't sugar coat anything. Or beat around the bush.
She told me the truth in well detail about everything.
I had alot more freedom than some kids because I was so obedient and well behaved and never got into any trouble and I made good grades.
And one thing Mama always said to me was she would trust me until I gave her a reason NOT to trust me.
Well I highky valued that trust and I never once broke it.
And because of my strong love for God and my strong Will to please him and make him and mama proud, I stayed out of trouble, and I devoted alot of my time to helping others.
God later called me into the ministry when I was in my 20's.
    I'm now I'm in my later 30's.
I think its very important to make that full commitment to God.
    He doesn't like lukewarmness.
God said he would rather you be HOT or COLD, but not lukewarm.
So many people overlook Jesus' warning in the Parable of the Sower. Where he illustrates 4 different groups of people in this world who hear the word of God, but each respond differently too it.
Pay close attention to the group of people who are like SEEDS SOWN ON ROCKY GROUND.
Jesus said when they first Hear God's word they are filled with joy and gladness. But their relationship with God is not a ETERNAL relationship. It's actually a TEMPORARY relationship with no REAL DEEP ROOT in it.
Jesus says tribulations come and they get offended in God and turn away from him.
Basically these people are like Judas who betrayed Jesus.
They have knowledge of who God is. They know his son Jesus Died on the cross. But in their hearts they have chosen to NOT FULL COMMITT to him.
They have NO REAL ROOT IN THE VINE OF LIFE which is Jesus.
So those little plants that are grow on rocky ground have no deep root. The sun comes up and scratches and burns their leaves. They wither and die.
Out of all 4 groups of people who hear the word of God.
Only the seeds sown in GOOD RICH SOIL survive eternally.
God has offered us all the free gift of salvation.
But uif we don't believe, and if we do not committ to God, than any relationship we form with him is lukewarm and fickle.
That is the warning Jesus gave us in the Parable of the Sower.
So until you believe and accept Jesus as Lord and Savior.
And you make the choice to commit to him and do what the Bible says to and ENDURE UNTIL THE VERY END. Then you cannot benefit from this free gift of salvation.
There is only one way for us to be redeemed for all our sins.
Jesus already paid the debt and the price of our sins.
We just have to accept him and be faithful to Him.
And if we fail to do this we have nobody but ourselves to blame for being so blind and ignorant for not accepting the truth.
    God has offered us salvation.
But he has given us all FREE WILL.
So our choices Will determine our fate after we leave this world.
But for God's faithful Children. We know that to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord.
Now I realize not everybody loves God and is his child.
Regardless I try to show them love and friendship.
They may live a life that offends God. All I can do is love them and pray for them.
And God has used me to help some of them find their way to Him.
God is my reason to live.
In him my life has a true and deeper meaning.
The cares of this world will one day perish and no longer be of any importance. It's better to be of service to God because God's children will each be granted rank and titles in Heaven.
The better things will be for you if you fulfill God's Will in your life and live your life in service to him and helping other lost souls find Jesus. That is one of the greatest things we can do for God.
But just because somebody lives for God doesn't mean they are stiff necks.
We can dance and have a great time and do so within God's boundaries.
I hold God's values very high.
They truly mean something too me.
Without him I would be lost and without a calling or purpose.
God's Word tells us he knew us as he formed us in our mothers womb. He knows the number of hairs on our heads.
He also says he knows the plan he has for each of us.
And my goal in life is to surrender to God's Will and plan in my life.
Share the gospel and help others in need.
I also am a part of a ministry that together we help the homeless.
We are sharing God's love and trying to meet the needs of those who need it.
I can think of no other better way to live, than to be a vessel for God to use to help others.

11:46 - As a matter of fact, Ashleigh, there were so many of us waiting to release our angst while blaring music and dancing in seemingly abandoned structures that there was usually a line outside. This one time I waited so long that by the time I was aloud in, I forgot what I was angry about, so I wound up doing an interpretive dance routine to Asia's "The Smile Has Left Your Eyes." NOT my finest hour.

I remember watching this at a cinema in (randomly) Germany, when I was about 11 years old. And it was an experience I’ll never forget and have never experienced again. The whole cinema was cheering and were up on their feet dancing and singing in the aisles. Everyone! There wasn’t one person complaining. It was the most joyous and most connected cinema experience ever! This movie always immediately makes me think of how I felt that day and I love it for that 😁
Side note: is the ‘dislike’ button closer to the ‘👍’ button, more than it normally is?? (Mobile/cell) Cos I keep accidentally hitting it all of a sudden.😬 unless I’ve gained weight on my fingers alone.

From Wikipedia about towns banning dancing:
    Film inspiration
Footloose is loosely based on the town of Elmore City, Oklahoma. The town had banned dancing since its founding in 1898 in an attempt to decrease the amount of heavy drinking. One advocate of the dancing ban was the Reverend from the nearby town of Hennepin, F.R. Johnson. He said, "No good has ever come from a dance. If you have a dance somebody will crash it and they'll be looking for only two things - women and booze. When boys and girls hold each other, they get sexually aroused. You can believe what you want, but one thing leads to another." Because of the ban on dancing, the town never held a prom. In February 1980, the junior class of Elmore City's high school made national news when they requested permission to hold a junior prom and it was granted. The request to overturn the ban in order to hold the prom was met with a 2-2 decision from the school board when school board president Raymond Lee broke the tie with the words, "Let 'em dance."[13]
In 1981, Lynden, a small town in Washington State, passed an ordinance that banned the practice of dancing at events and locations where alcohol would be served. This incident received national attention. And since this event happened only years before Footloose was released, the local residents believe that these two things are not a coincidence.

I have such clear memories of seeing this in the theater as a little kid. I would have been about 10, and I was an Episcopal priest's kid living in rural Michigan. This was the first I'd heard of minister's kids being "bad", but it was huge culturally and certainly reinforced the stereotype. I think I saw it as a challenge. I've had an affection for Kevin Bacon ever since, although as an adult I totally agree John Lithgow could get it. Mostly in his third rock role, though. His wife is Dianne Wiest, who's in so many iconic 80s movies. She was also in The Birdcage. Also, I thought that warehouse dance/gymnastics scene was the most intense thing my little pre-teen brain had ever processed, and I felt so personally betrayed when I learned about body doubles, and that Kevin Bacon couldn't actually do that. I have never stopped loving this soundtrack beyond all reason.
