Academic vs non-academics is generally a more appropriate description. Most specialties don't have a large "private practice" presence. Radiology is unique in that there are still a lot of private gigs. I think this can be misleading to those who have no idea what private practice vs hospital based practice is.
I know he isn’t in academic practice plus from what I’m aware of is that not all positions at prestigious hospitals are “academic positions” and they also offer clinical positions. Plus in some cases being at a hospital pays far better then that of a private practice position because of the incentive bonuses they receive and the huge salary raises they get as they progress in their department each year and become better.
