Regardless of the reason they had to fight each others to death, there's no winner in that kind of fights, they still both lose something seriously valuable, many can only turn to the bottle...

The conflict of "Who would win between X and Zero" is pointless. Anything you multiply by Zero is 0. On the other hand, X as an infinite potential of evolution. What do you obtain when you multiply 0 by infinity? Well, it depends on the "0" and on the "infinity", but to be general, the result is unknown. What we can say is that Zero would destroy a brand new X. But we don't know who would win between a ultimate X and Zero.
While the successor indeed does have better spritework and a greater action-to-cutscene ratio, I must say I prefer this one more largely due to the outcome. The outcome of the successor seems more like a means to appease both sides of the fans with neither side winning, but this one handles the outcome in a more believable way. The ending makes the viewer feel good that X won and that Dr. Wily's dark legacy was put to an end before it could fulfill its purpose, but at the same time, seeing X
Quite frankly, I don't understand why people hate that X won. While I understand that Zero was meant to destroy X, remember that he lost to Vile in the first game. X could destroy Vile and his Ride Armors in X3 and X8 (yeah you can't blow it up in the boss battle, but it's pouring smoke afterwards). It's entirely possible X could have upgraded his stock body just as Zero did in X2. Statistically, X's abilities have the advantage here because of their range. Zero, while having the Z-buster, still relies primarily on the Z-saber.

Eventually X and Zero defeated Omega together. Since Omega is Zero's original body, that means he has Zero's original power. X couldn't beat Omega by himself which proves that Zero is much stronger than X.
The Dark Elf came from Zero. It was extracted from him, which means he had the power all along. Using something that came from you to strengthen yourself isn't considered outside help.
