This was a fantastic podcast. I have both of his books. The latest Albala Workbook I pre-ordered and am only halfway through reading and studying. He speaks about all the things I have been studying for years and gives great insight. The questions and the banter between you and Michell are great. I have subscribed to your podcast. This was the second one I have seen, the other being Scott Christensen. I look forward to seeing more of them. And, I will be visiting Mitchell Albala's website for more of what he has to offer. From what I can tell from the last hour and one-half, he is a very giving person. His love of art and teaching shows!
I thoroughly enjoyed listening to Mitchell Albala! Having his first book, I was excited to hear him talk about landscape painting even more. It was very kind of Mitchell to share so much of valuable information with us. It felt like sitting in his workshop. I ended up making helpful notes throughout. I thought I knew about Notan, but his clarification on using Notan as a shape tool only, and not as a value tool, was a realization. Will surely get his new book! Thanks a lot for hosting him Mr. Olson. I look forward to seeing you interview more such great artists! Also, I liked hearing your thoughts on challenges of photography and outdoor painting which is a struggle for most amateurs. But what was encouraging to hear from you was, this struggle is essential to get to the next level of art! :) So true! I'm fairly new to your channel and loving it already. Thanks again, from India. :)
I’m most of the way through this episode. Wonderful as always. I was laughing as you talked about cropping photos. I nearly always crop my photos, I would say 99% of the time. Even those that are a simple panorama shot. I prefer going wide then deciding on the ultimate composition. I really hope that helps me when I get to the point of painting something other than still life. I shall have to look for Mitchell’s book, I know it will be very useful!
Carl, you certainly are not alone in struggling with the Plein Air painting experience:) I think it's great you shared your experience with it. I too am a more solitary painter and person in general. With today's videos and social media, we can get an inaccurate impression about others painting progress and experiences. I too paint in oils and like you paint in plein air sometimes. I find I get the most out of it when I am easy on myself and don't try to accomplish it all and my main focus is color and observation so I grow in my studio work. Thank you for your very well-done interviews! - Julie Dobson Miner Michell Albala's first book is probably the best laid out and most valuable information in a book in an oil painting I have ever seen!!! I have now ordered his new book:)
I can't thank you enough for this presentation...I have ordered both your books at the library. I will decide which book is best for me to purchase fr Amazon.
Aww Carl, thank you so much - I'm glad you shared my letter to you. Perhaps it has helped some other artist as they go through similar struggles in their lives. This is such an important community, and I'm grateful to be part of it. All my best! Cheryl.
COMPOSITION & DESIGN, the backbone of all great fine art paintings.!

It would be good for Mitchell to show us examples of each of his concepts..Painting is a VISUAL art.!!
He shows several examples in both of his books.

Thank you !
Mitchells smile and the way his eyeglasses sit on his face reminds me of Ken Auster. ☺
What is Notan ? I’m completely in the dark here
