  • Today we are introduced to the new Display Panel coming in the Factorio Expansion. It is part of the Circuit Network suite of items and acts as a "sign post" to display information for the player! It can of course also be connected to the circuit network and used dynamically. Plus some inserter pickup fixes and slight buff as well!

    Factorio is a game in which you build and maintain factories.
    You will be mining resources, researching technologies, building infrastructure, automating production and fighting enemies.       Idk if you guys understood what they wrote in the description of that but they said that they added an option (in each individual Display Panel) to always show if you have alt mode on, not that alt mode showed all Display Panel texts everywhere.

      I think that is good idea to just make an alt mode 3 stable, like off, on without displays, on with displays

      @@sedivh0 that implementation doesn't fix the issue. all 4 states should be possible. alt on and displays on, alt off and displays of alt on and displays off and alt off and displays off.

    The fix for burner inserters may not be too important, but I seem to recall the same issue exists for yellow inserters picking up from yellow belt corners - which is a completely matching technology level. Not to mention any other legit tech level combinations picking up from corners.

    Well, this one was great.
    Blue belts are not needed everywhere but I only use blue belts to reduce the number of items I need in my inventory. 3 instead of 9 is a big difference.

      inventory woes have LONG made me feel like we need a personal equipment item that adds inventory space, or additional (infinite??) levels of toolbelt tech.

      @@rhueoflandorin Agreed. Oddly Factorio is one of the rare games where your inventory gets better the further you go. Once your in the late game with Robots, Trains, and Spidertron I don't often find inventory a problem. Maybe when landfilling or concreting a large area.

    i want a 2x2 and/or 3x3 display.
    (1x1 in alt-mode looks to similiar to box with one type of item in it.)

      Will be easy to mod in, once the 1x1 entity is in the base game.

    The inserter improvements are great. As had noticed the burner issue. On big bases def see the display panel's being a good addition and glad they look like the rest of the circuit network stuff

    curious: what are some of the use cases / ways you see yourself using the display panel? What I thought of was a way to debug / inform players what the heck a bank of comparators is doing.
    so far all we've gotten in terms of circuit network are variables....now we have a way to display messages based on those variables....to me this is akin to "commenting your code"
    With the new ability to set circuit recipes, it can also be used at a "dashboard" to inform the player what different sections of a variable-controlled assembler set up is currently doing......without having to travel to each place...
    OR: with the introduction of cross-planetary logistics and multi-planet bases....a means of informing the player what certain locations are low on....but we can kinda already do this.
    Wondering if there are any "obvious" or novel ways such a thing can be useful.

    I would like display panel to be able to show numbers.. like the nixie tubes mod but better.. And I wonder if inserter ups can also be improved, or just having dedicated loaders/unloaders?

    I thought earlier inserters couldn't grab from faster belts by design so you had to upgrade. The fix makes sense for the green belts, and I guess I'm glad burner inserters got a buff.

    Them calling it chart instead of map is very unintuitive. An immediate thought was that it might just be a translation thing, but then again, I don't really think so. I do think it was an intentional choice, probably because a few things we don't fully know about yet changed ...
    well, just speculation from my side.

    It would be so cool to be able to link rows of adjacent displays to show the message text, and use a scrolling marquee if the text is longer than the number of linked screens. I know you can do this with tons of combinators, essentially making your own computer chip logic, but that's way too involved usually. Also, I don't know how it would look, but it would be neat if the displays were interlaced or had a subtle glow to get that old CRT effect.

      @@DeronMeranda great ideas! I agree with both for sure. Having a subtle glow would be cool, especially at night. Oh! Maybe the glow only turns on at night, like when the lamps do. That'd be perfect in my opinion.

    inserters "missing" less often means they are idle more often, so perhaps a minor ups improvement - less active objects per tick with fast belts?

    I don't know about them getting into a FFF but the first pass display plates managed to make it into the steam store screenshots for the expansion (there's one next to the landing pad in screenshot 11)

    It will be awesom, if we be able to create custom icons that can be displayed. Just imagine, that will be added a sprite graphic mode to the customs matrix displays, and was very helpful to guys who created a animations/games/arts and other things in factorio by logic.

    I just downloaded Nixie Tubes yesterday. Such a handy mod and the idea is very similar to this but I kind of miss the ability to display item icons in the Nixie Tubes mod, and this panel cover that and more. hope you can display numbers or signal values in it just like NT does.
    Btw, they changed the map icon for the fluid wagon? i guess i didn't noticed this in the previous fff

    Those display panels just are not large enough. Anything but near medium to close ranged viewing in a clustered build it'll be near impossible to see.
    The whole point of these panels is for very quick & easy to find reference this is none of those. I'll stick with better sign mods...

    I think chart meant the zoomed out map vs map view I guess? As in if you zoom in, it disappears. Where as the other option is always show which means it shows when zoomed in. I think thats what they were trying to convey but I also agree that chart is weird since not used anywhere else.

    Where is the faster stack long handed inserters? Or a Tier 4 or 5 assembler? Advanced 4 way belt sorting splitter that operates at Blue belt speed? Rocket artillery? Super electric furnace with higher output with a higher power draw? Larger train cargo wagons? Chemical weapon missles?

      I assume at least some of these things are coming up in a future FFF, all logical updates too I like them all

      The foundry is the super furnace. Other things are practically just a useless bloat and/or simplifiers.

    jup. should not be bound to alt mode, and should absolutely have [...] or something if there's additional mouse-over text.

    I have a build design that means building my base to launch a rocket took 21:22:46, which is well past 15 hours, but it isn't terrible but that was without biters, so I plan to run some more tests after I get a new updated time on my previous run, I never saved the game so I had a load that left me in a base with extremely low power and all kinds of trouble in the outlook, but I had a little bit of solar power in place not enough, but some so I disconnected my steam power from the base so the steam power could get a load of our stockpiled in the belts that feed the 4 lanes of steam engines. Then I turned back on the steam to the base and headed into the base, I also told the base to try and recall all the bots and I verified I was not adding any more bots to the base, but it is unlikely the construction bots will get disabled since they have a huge backlog of work to do, oh well if I get some off the chargers that will free up more power for the machines :) Anyway, after that I'm going to try and build my base with biters set to start far away and not evolve first and see how many hours that costs me :) Anyway, I hope it isn't to much of a disaster :) Yes, some of my delay is I build roads and line both sides of the road with power poles, etc... and when I try and do my run in sub 15 hours I do not build roads and I build a thing, then I build the next thing a few squares over and repeat and repeat, I should maybe try making a clean new build that eliminates a lot of the double effort I waste on power and light and shit with this design, it wouldn't need to change much, but I would lose my side roads that make find things easier, oh well, I probably need to think more, and try more :)

    The inserter buff is massive for the weird modded inserters where you can set it to pick up at range 1 and drop at range 2: it would always take forever to extend/retract.

    Thanks for making these videos each week! I'm one of those people who read the FFF every week at 6am, but its always nice to hear your take on things or if I missed anything from it.

    I do like these displays but I will also keep useing nixie tubes mod along with them, because they are stylish

    Personally, I think the inserter changes are horrible! As a self-identified factory building, I loved working with the puzzle of inserters not grabbing objects when needed, it was a crucial element of the puzzle that has been boiled down to yet another casual logistics minigame. I seriously hope Wube reconsiders this option, or at least gives us the option to set it back to the older mechanic. /s
