The story is he was playing a concert that night, or the next, staying in a nearby hotel, and went out for a walk and came upon this guy playing some of his songs. He asked, "mind if I join you?" Thankfully somebody had a little 8mm camera.
He apparently wasn't carrying money, but had someone go back later and give this guy a "substantial" tip, and tickets to the concert. The guy appears in the documentary film, "Springsteen and I" (2013), and fills in some of the details. Twenty-five years later it was still a thrill of a lifetime.

Very Nice initiative of Bruce. He was walking down the big commercial Street of Copenhagen called Ströget and sees this Springsteen inpersinator. He joints him. The next day he plays his regular Tunnel of Love Express tour concert at the old Idraets Park Stadium in front of 58 000 paying people.

What I can't grasp about Springsteen is his ability to keep astounding the audience throughout his career, always pulling off something entirely unpredictable and mesmerizing...I saw him three times this summer and each show had completely surreal moments during which you had to pinch yourself... I came to Milan expecting a three hour show that would blow me away, and what I got was a show verging on four hours during which both Bruce and The Band exuded sheer prowess...

No, Bruce is the Boss, because he's paying his touring bandmembers and crew's paycheck. One of them called him 'the boss' once in the early days of his career. "Ask the boss" someone said once, he answered another man's question. After that, everybody (bandmembers for touring (not E-street band) /crew/fans and media) called Bruce The Boss.

My dad got sober a year before he died and we became best friends and friends for the first time.

Then walked over borrowed the guitar from one of the street musicians and the rest is a beautiful story.. I saw it in the news that night. Never forgot it. The first time I saw how generous he is. @@sanookaus1334 1988...........No cellphones (huge wired car phones we had back then) no social media, only photo- and video camera's. When ppl went to town for shopping in 1988, nobody took their photo- or video camera with them. Only tourists.
Also, the most Northern European ppl are very down to earth ppl. These folks and streetsinger enjoyed Bruce's spontaneous street performance in the streets of Copenhagen very much. Spontaneous playing 3 of his songs and the street singer joining Bruce. Why would anybody want to desturb that for an autograph. I wouldn't. In my country the boss can walk the streets, we are very down to earth and remember that Bruce is a human too. He can sing, write and perform and is very famous, but that's what he does for a living. He is just a person Ike we all are. I don't ask my doctor for an autograph, why would I ask Bruce for one? I am a huge fan for over 40 years, but I wouldn't bother him if I saw him walking our streets.

THIS was possible in the great 80's. A spontaneous performance on the streets. Bruce asking that guy if he may join him when he heard him playing his songs. In the 80's, famous ppl still could walk the streets and later, at night, perform for thousands of fans in a foreign country. If I could, I would go back to the 80's. Great music, a lot of genres, no cellphones and social media. Ppl realy talked and looked eachother in the eyes. Now, everyone is looking on their cell phones, is social media more important than a eye to eye conversation and the selfies. .... behhh. Fake world, fake news, fake pictures. Bruce won't do this today is my guess. How it all changed for him in his long long music career. No privacy at all anymore. I remember his first website, before there was social media. I subscribed immidiatly. Getting updates by Email of the touring places and dates and new records.
This performance in Copenhagen was so spontaneous. That streetsinger won't ever forget what happened that day. Bruce was well known and famous world wide because of him singing on the record 'USA for Africa' and the record 'Born in the USA'. Before that, not everybody around the world heard about him. I bought 'the River' record in 1980 and was a fan since then.
We'll done Bruce and streetsinger, something to remember for ever.

I remember seeing this on the News. A guy was out testing a new Video Camera from a nearby store and spotted The Boss who was in Copenhagen to give a concert.. It was a totally spontaneous act on his behalf

Simply amazing. I've seen this video elsewhere, but the audio quality is better with your version. This just proves that for some artists, it's still about making music whenever the urge hits them. BRAVO Ithcy Knee ...
