Australian dancer Steven McRae is a Principal of The Royal Ballet. He joined The Royal Ballet School on a Prix de Lausanne scholarship in 2003. He graduated into The Royal Ballet in 2004 and was promoted to First Artist in 2005, Soloist in 2006, First Soloist in 2008 and Principal in 2009. His classical and dramatic roles with the Company include Romeo, Des Grieux (Manon), Prince Siegfried (Swan Lake), Prince Florimund (The Sleeping Beauty), Prince (The Nutcracker and Cinderella), the Chosen One (The Rite of Spring) and Colas (La Fille mal gardée). McRae has created roles for Kim Brandstrup, Alastair Marriott, Wayne McGregor, Alexei Ratmansky, Liam Scarlett and Christopher Wheeldon, among others.
McRae was born and raised in Sydney. His father was a drag racer and McRae shares his passion for motor racing. He began dancing at the age of seven after becoming interested in his older sister’s dance classes. McRae performs tap alongside ballet, a dual ability he displayed in his Prix de Lausanne entry and often used by choreographers in new roles created on McRae, such as the Mad Hatter in Wheeldon’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.
Prizes include the 2002 Adeline Genée Gold Medal, the 2003 Prix de Lausanne, the 2007 Emerging Male Artist (Classical) and the 2012 Best Male Dancer Awards at the Critics’ Circle Dance Awards, and in 2014 he was named Young Australian Achiever in the UK by the Australia Day Foundation. He has performed as a guest artist with ballet companies all over the world, including American Ballet Theater (as part of a dance exchange programme), National Ballet of Canada, the Australian Ballet, Tokyo Ballet and numerous international galas.

The uses of the ankle in ballet and tap are profoundly different - one is stiff and the other is loose. I have never seen a dancer be so proficient in both. Almost impossible and wonderfully so.
Steven is so lovely inside and out. Beautiful spirit and attitude.

My god. McCrae is something between a dance superhero and, seemingly, the nicest goddamn guy Australia has ever offered besides that old man who knit sweaters for penguins ( I think he was Australian at least). Steven McRae, despite being basically a god-emperor in the ballet world, plasters his Instagram with pictures of his sinfully adorable little kids and how over the moon he is to be a husband and father. Who just happens to be a god-emperor as well.
Special people are born everywhere; but the parents put in the time and money so he could have the training. Not to diminish his work, tenacity etc, but his mum had to ferry him to the lessons many times a week. His training was also somewhat alien to them in the beginning; his father being a drag racer.
That's Australia for you. Think of some other countries where there are no teachers for this and certainly no parents who could afford it or ferry the child.

I love Steven McRae's dances and performances. Here's a little info: Csárdás, often seen with the archaic spelling Czárdás, is a traditional Hungarian folk dance, the name derived from csárda (old Hungarian term for tavern). It originated in Hungary and was popularized by Romani music bands in Hungary and neighboring lands. (I am Hungarian btw so this is extra special).
No. It is based on the hungarian csárdás genre, but this piece was composed in 1904 by Vittorio Monti. This composition is not a traditional hungarian folk dance, even if is inspired by them.
@@violetta7853 Yes, Czárdás is indeed the original Hungarian folk dance @That'sSoBeki is speaking about. Vittorio Monti drew inspiration from it and composed a piece to which he gave the same name in its honour. If I compose a piece that I choose to call 'Tarantella', it will be my interpretation of it, but Tarantella, the original, will still be the traditional Italian dance.
And it is NEVER danced in tap-shoes....

The combination of ballet and tap at the beginning before moving to include influences of what felt like multiple styles of ballroom dancing, like tango and waltz throughout, and that absolutely sinful ending of the body wave into the “draw me like one of your French girls” pose, as well as the playfulness from the violinist. This is such a masterpiece.
If you love this combo of ballet and tap, you should definitely check out his performance as the Mad Hatter in the Alice in Wonderland ballet! It's amazing!

Is anyone else here because he was the only good part of the Cats movie?
I hated every moment of it except his performance as Skimbleshanks, and I wanted to see more of what he could do without being smothered in horrific CGI.
Vice versa I only watched the Cats film for Steven and Francesca Hayward. So many talented people in that film. Such a shame it was so rushed. Skimbleshanks was definitely the best part of that film.
same, I'm thankful to the film for introducing me to a bunch of great dancers I knew nothing about.
Between Skimbleshanks, Rum Tum Tugger and Grizabella they made the movie bare able for me.

Absolutely amazing! Well done dancer, violinist and pianist. Why criticise something so wonderful done for such a wonderful reason in such a generous way? Actually violinist and pianist should both be following the dancer. So what if the pianist got a little behind at one point? He soon gets back on track and it was obviously recorded live and not edited. So well done all I say! (I'm a dance teacher by the way.)

I would LOVE to see him go against a classical Irish step dancer (i.g. Colin Dunne or others). His speed and precision are incredible, and he has such grace. Love the blended genres at play here.
There is utterly no blended genre of Irish step dancing and what McRae performs here, you silly girl.

Oh but there are "blended" forms of Irish dance. See Prodijig & Fusion Fighters for a start. Both influences on more conventional Irish dance too. (Depends on definition of "blended", of course.)

Goodness! I’ve heard this song countless times all my life but had never seen a piece of choreography that properly honored its energy and tempo (because frankly it’s almost humanly impossible) until today... I’m speechless, and in awe!

Wow, that was a superb performance! Art has no boundaries - Steven the dancer is Australian, Vasko the violinist is Bulgarian (as I am), Czardash is a Hungarian folk dance and the composer Vittorio Monti is Italian. And tapping is Irish. :D

The pianist as the accompaniment for the violinist always accomodates the violinist, not the other way around. And i have played czardas before, the song is supposed to lead into a very fast pace exactly like how the violinist played. perhaps they didnt have time to rehearse between the violinist and the pianist.

That's extraordinary. Very much praise. I was born in Hungary. The csárdás is our national dance, but it is danced quite differently. This fusion of dance styles is wonderful.

It's a shame, the violinist was going a bit too fast. They should take cues from the pianist, who sets the tempo. In this case the pianist had to rush to keep up with him. The music is so beautiful I can't understand why this would happen. You would think professionally trained musicians could keep time but apparently not.
Maybe the violinist is used more to working alone

It's a perfect hybrid of Hungarian, Roma, Irish, and Argentinian choreography. Steven is amazing, both on TV and on stage. Saw him dance live, loved him to bits.

As a Hungarian folkdancer it's interesting to see this "remake". He is a great and creative artist and he made a amazing coreography. Altough as the Csárdás is danced by couples this is a bit hollow for me. The woman energy is missing. The name Verbunk would be more appropiate because of the similarities in the movements and in the violin variation. The meaning and the feelings are really close too! Again, beautiful! Thanks for taking inspiration from my culture❤

Good to the males expressing themselves creatively. More men should try expressing themselves creatively, not necessarily in dance, could be anything. It would be good for their spirits. He is very good, in how he has managed to combine steps from classical ballet with tap dancing and add a touch of the Flamenco gyspy folkloric element to suit the music. But, one must also acknowledge the brilliant musician. This instrument and that type of music is virtuosic, fiendishly difficult to play so well. And all they had to create such a brilliant performance were just two real artists in ordinary simple clothes, no glittery costumes, no fancy scene setting. Just the two of them, their passion for their art and the space to express it. Sometimes, that is all real artists need to do their thing, creatively.
