On June 7th, 2024 we received a request from an 'owner' to surrender, Chai, their two-year old blind French Bulldog. The form stated they had recently gotten Chai back from their daughter, who was moving out of town. The current owner said they were also moving and could not take Chai with them (a blessing in disguise).
Chai was being forced to live in a San Bernardino backyard in the extreme summer heat. His only form of protection from the heat and sun was a kennel. If you know anything about a Frenchie, they cannot survive long in the heat.
We knew we needed to get Chai out of that horrific heat fast; unfortunately, it took us until 6/25/24 to find an available foster home. What we didn't know, is Chai should have been rescued even before the owner completed the surrender form😢
A photo of Chai was emailed to us at the time his surrender form was submitted (see original photo). When we received him into our care, he looked NOTHING like his photo. It was shocking! We expected to see his left eye swollen and needing medical attention; what we didn't expect was to see his left eye bulging so far out of his head it looked to burst at any moment. His right eye was completely sunken in and appeared to have had already some sort of trauma.
We also knew Chai's skin would be irritated from his living conditions; again... we where shocked how bad his skin and fur looked. His skin is thickened, dry, scaly, scabby, and itchy. Why he was allowed to live like this is just horrifying.
And if his eyes and skin were not enough, we were told he had an 'ear infection'. Well, an ear infection is the understatement of the century. Chai's ears have been infected, and untreated, for so long he has scar tissue that has formed inside of his inner ear and starting to grow outside of his canals. Again...something his original photo did not depict accurately at all!!
Chai is being fostered by one of our more experienced homes and he has already received a medicated bath, eye drops, and pain meds. We know he is in extreme pain because he cannot stop panting or get comfortable. It is absolutely heart-breaking to see a Frenchie come to us in this condition.
Chai is scheduled for his first vet visit on 6/27/24. We already know he will need at least one eye removed, his ears treated (hopefully no surgery), neutered, medications for his skin/ears/eyes, dewormed, and his vaccinations. He has a VERY long road ahead of him. Thankfully, we have Chai in our care to make sure he gets all he needs AND deserves! (He is already sleeping in bed with his foster mom😍 )
If you can make a donation towards his care, you will be helping Chai get every necessary treatment much faster. We never have a 'reserve' and must fundraise for each dog we take into our rescue. Every dollar donated goes to Chai's medical care, we do not take a penny for ourselves.
As Chai's journey begins, we will bring you updates along the way. We appreciate your support of Chai, we know his life will only get better from this moment and beyond.
    Thank you for your support
