I absolutely agree with you! Making GB Studio content is so much fun, but it can be quite a challenge to keep everything organized. I'll have to make more for sure! Have a great week!
Rapidly becoming one of my favorite channels. Got here from your Flipper videos and have been consuming just about everything you put out. Thanks for all you do!
You're very welcome! I know I need to make more videos, I just get overwhelmed when I hit record and start talking about topic "X" then that fades into topic "S" which leads to topic "O" next thing I know I have a mess of information Lmao.
this video really made it seem so easy and it was concise and straight to the point, I've been reluctant to dive into GB Studio but I think today I am going to give it another try! thanks!
That's awesome! I hope it helped and I want to make more GB Videos just a bit daunting at times lol. But stay persistent and before you know it you got something.
a free alternative (which i use) is krita. it's not really a pixel art program but if you make your image small enough you can make pixel art with it. they even have a special pixel art pen for that case!
planning more GB Studio tutorials ? an transition effect between scenes (useful to visual novel like game), there is noting tutorial about in the internet
No, visual novel games is an history game with scenes like pages in comic HQ book - one type of classic transition effect in games is FADE-IN and FADE-OUT between scenes (pages), another effects they are welcome too (like transitions in Microsoft power point manner)
Thanks BenLogan I want to make more but always get overwhelmed because part A connects to part F but to show part F I need to show how to do part C and B in that order the. You have parts D and E just waiting at the train stop late for work. But yeah I’d love to do more GB Studio videos :D
Question! I want to put objects in my world the character can interact with that will display a dialogue box. Like, clicking on a sign post, or trash can, or statue in Pokémon. Do I need to make them actors? Or can I set up events to trigger on the background?
Thanks for the video!! Im confused though can you only use those 3 colors for the map? Cause you said you can only use those 3 colors but your houses were different colors?
@PeterMilko I’m actually live right now on Twitch finishing up tomorrow’s video related to GB Studio. Also I know exactly who you are! You actually got me into GB Studio creation! Absolute legend!
That is a great question and I'm not sure I have the technical know how. I'd recommend you ask @RobertDoman as they have WAY more knowledge about GB Studio.
I have a problem with my gb studio, i am running it on version 3.1.0. When I choose the dialog button my game gets freaky, one of 2 things happen: 1. There is a dupe of the text in the middle of the screen that wont go away + the text box just isnt there. 2. The dialog just doesnt show up. How do I fix this?
@ModernBroadcast you are the best, thank you. I really want dialog in my game, but it isn't possible now. Maybe I could use a previous version. But I have it installed on 2 devices and both have the same glitch so I think it is something in this version
@@DracoTheNinja I found the following on a form. They state your exact situation so hopefully this is your issue as well? “I've been wrestling with this graphical error for a few months and I think may have just found a fix. For all affected scenes that had the text issue, I made sure that none of them had the "Logo" scene type (I changed any affected scene that did), I changed the backgrounds, ran the build, closed it, then changed the backgrounds to whatever they were supposed to be. This fixed the issue in my project, hopefully this solution works for you guys as well.”
@ModernBroadcast thank you for the solution, the only weird thing is: I dont use the logo scene, i just use the background and the text go brrrrrrr! But i will try the rest
With the blank map selected on the right in the inspector there’s a map drop down where you can change the map. Also when saving from Aesprite be sure to save as .png in the background folder
@@BladeReynolds hmmm what colors did you use for the house? Sometimes if you use rgb lighting gb studio will relate that to the closest color? Maybe somehow you managed to get all the same color? Can you open the background folder and see your house.png? Is it blank there?
@@BladeReynolds open the image in aesprite and try changing the colors to something like black, blue, red, and green then save as house2.png and try that
So are we only a few steps away from having user-friendly software that will allow us to color existing palletes of our favourite monochrome DMG games?
@@ModernBroadcast I guess I didn't word this correctly haha. What I meant was have an interface like this where you can load up an existing Gameboy monochrome game and add/tweak Color pallets to make it playable on Gameboy Color. Which has 56 Colors. Do you see this as something possible? I know some people have already done dx hacks of a handful of games already (like metroid 2 and super mario land) but there probably aren't more than 10 in total. This could be a game changer..
@@jonnyblanka oh I see what you mean. Yeah really the only way for that currently is rom hacks and idk if someone will develop something mainlined for that as it’s messing with the big N’s intellectual properties. But who knows, it would be cool to have a program do this.
@@ModernBroadcast Yeah that's disappointing. I'm trying to teach myself this and see if there are any guides online but the community seems very cryptic about it's implementation other than saying it's very complicated. Is there an equivalent to GB studio for Color games or is this something yet to he released? Perhaps then it could be backwards engineered and you could access a games code/pallets..

Haha, listen this is great because its plug play simple, for me personally its always fascinating understanding what's going on in the background. When I mess with any game studio I try the programming side first then switch to nodes, plug play, drag drop, etc.
I'm going to become a professional game designer for a party of one! ME! Thanks Modern Broadcast!

This is the most beginner-friendly tutorial I've seen on GB Studio, please do more!

Question!
I want to put objects in my world the character can interact with that will display a dialogue box.
Like, clicking on a sign post, or trash can, or statue in Pokémon.
Do I need to make them actors? Or can I set up events to trigger on the background?
So you can make them actors OR set them up as triggers. It's easier to set them as actors but then your limiting your npc count.
About the 192 unique tiles, is that in general for the whole game? or is it a 192 tiles per scene?
192 per scene.
Great video
Thank you Zachariah, I look forward to making more in the future
Hi how do you if you don’t by the pocket RBG thing? Just wondering
thing I don't get is, why did the reverse b and a to a and b?
That is odd.
Check settings > Top Down 2D and make sure that the Interact Button is what you want it to be (should be A)
@@JustinKocian Thanks!
Thanks for the video!! Im confused though can you only use those 3 colors for the map? Cause you said you can only use those 3 colors but your houses were different colors?
So in "color mode" you can have 8 pallets then paint them on the screen to make different colors. Same with actors you can have upto 8 pallets.
@@ModernBroadcast oh okay thank you!
Around 14:08, is green the only color we can use to make sprites?
i think you can also use color if you want to make a GBC/GBA game

Very basic, non complex physics, I’m sure. And most likely a whole lot of “if statements”
