I'm retired but used to be an NPS member and I can't believe they left you without your tools of the trade for 5 months. Someone needs a kick up the backside in both service and PR departments...🙈🙈🙈
You should not have to be an NPS member to get quality customer service. This is nothing new with Nikon, they are starting to revert back to the days where they where full of themselves.
@@jfphotography69I agree with you totally but working photographers should get fast turnaround on repairs, especially under warranty and get a loan camera... That's the whole point of "professional Services".
It's great to see your Z8 up and running again. After watching this video, I decided to disable the shutter shield feature on my Z8, although I'm quite fond of it. I plan to keep it turned off until there's a recall, hopefully. It’s very odd that a NPS member would have such a long turnaround time. I’m a NPS member also and have never seen anything longer than 2 weeks which includes shipping.
Well done guys. I enjoy watching your chats. I've had my own fair share of faults and poor performance issues with Nikon cameras and lenses. Here's the list. D1H: AF focus issue and rubber replacement -warranty repair; D800 faulty focus peripheral focus points, 10 pin connector fell into camera - warranty repairs, D810 with 24mm f/1.4 lens - inconsistent focus accuracy - never really fixed.
I think it also has a lot to do with where you are. How is customer service in the UK? Rubbish as I experienced. In China, last week I sent a 6+ year old out of warranty lens in for assessment as I wasn't happy with the sharpness. 3 days later they called me with someone that can speak english. He explained about the lens, that they had made some software configuration changes and it's improved and within expected performance. They did it for free and sent it back the next day. Different situation, but great service! Thanks Tamron! Nikon needs global service KPIs within 48 hours for their pro cameras and lenses.
It’s simply not good enough from Nikon. To be left in the cold with a failed camera. I cancelled buying a 70 200 based on your faults. Not made in Japan anymore is almost certainly meant a drop in quality. If this was a car you wouldn’t be happy chasing and waiting five months. Simply unacceptable. I have working faultless cameras decades old, Z8 couldn’t even do a year, pathetic frankly.
We had a bad experience. Seems like others have too. But it also seems rare. The 70-200 is an amazing lens and so is the z8. It wouldn’t stop me buying. But I hope Nikon realise it loses them customers.
Congrats on having your Z8 back, and what a nightmare of poor service from Nikon! I can relate because I had my Z f in for a leatherette change a couple of weeks before Christmas, and I was told that if I dropped it in person at the official service centre I would get it back within two weeks... The reality is that I got it back on January 24th, which was waaaaaay beyond what was promised and throughout the entire duration, they never even once picked up my calls! The only thing that was preventing me from going there to make a scene was that the service centre is too far of a drive from where I live. When I finally got it back, I was much less motivated to shoot, and I had lost the opportunity to go on a photoshoot during the holiday. Terrible service!
This is what I am saying all the times: If your repair takes longer for whatever reason, just tell me. I had problems with my PC some 10 years ago as university student. Absolutely needed it. "Repair takes 2 weeks" and it was gone for almost 8 weeks. If they told me it will take 8 weeks upfront, I could have dealt with it better. But like that, no... Or do it like Apple does it. Tell me it takes 2 weeks and it arrives after 7 days 🤣
I own the same combo as you, z8 and zf, and I the zf has been experiencing issues with the camera that gets stuck with a black background with the information around the frame but without any image (it is like having the curtain closed) and not even turning it off will solve the issue. Just taking out the battery helps, but shutter has to be pressed to use it. Sending ot back to Nikon and hopes they send it back in due time.
I had my issues with Nikon, had a faulty Z9. The communication was very poor, none existent for months… don’t take me wrong, I like Nikon files, the cameras and lenses specifically Z mount. But fed up with the service, absolutely terrible service. I am considering selling all my gear and buy Sony, a few of my friends say that never had issues with Sony service, so I will try Sony system and see…
Ive had something similar in the past but other than once instance of a 3 day send off and return its always taken months via the shop NPS keep you pretty well updated with their system but it did take a while for my z6II's to get back to me last winter, hence me buying the Z8 to cover work till then! @@russandloz
Z8 production was probably at full speed, and Z6II parts are plentiful because Z6II production isn't! Though honesty is the best policy in customer relations!
Yes I think it was me that made the comment ages ago about the contacts you need to keep them clean. It is common with Nikon on cameras. It even happens on the D850. I've had it happen so it's another thing that goes wrong with Nikon cameras, but it's something you need... You get a lot of grease and oil smudge on the end of the lens and contact points as well.
Can I make a suggestion and I've commented on your videos before you should send them a bill for your lost income seriously and attach a legal letterhead to it estimating the loss of income from not having that camera for five months seriously and send the bill to them and they may not pay it, but they may get the message back it up with the legal letterhead as well. Seriously that's exactly what I would do. If I had that situation which I do rely on my income for Photography and I had a camera that broke that was essentially brand-new, and still under warranty. I would be actually billing them for lost income five months is ridiculous. It's great that you've got it back. I've heard a few people who've had the problem with the Z8 and it's one of the reasons why I did not get that camera. I know it seems crazy not to buy a camera based on one things, but I was never a fan of the shutter curtain. I've don't feel like you need it. I have a GFX camera now and it doesn't have a shutter curtain. It's one less thing that can break. Yes, it does mean that you have to keep your sensor clean, but that's a good thing, I'm just really glad it's back in your hands and hopefully all is good again
I haven’t lost income as I had older spare cameras but it sure was frustrating. But I do wonder how or if we are supposed to clean the shutter guard? Surely cleaning a sensor is easier?
you would like to think they would have had good contacts at Nikon being a main supplier in the UK. Small consolation but glad you have you camera back though@@russandloz
You MUST switch the camera Off in order to switch lenses. This locks moving lens internals like AF & VR. That way transport of your lenses is not a risk in itself.
@@Ben_Stewart - neither did I. But if you have more complex lenses, with VR, and travel less than fluid roads, then Nikon's advice will help you. I only learnt this a couple weeks ago.
The more electronics and gizmos they pack into these imaging computers masquerading as cameras, the more chance of this sort of thing. They also don't keep spares anymore, since on the new manufacturing philosophy, inventory is considered a waste. I work in manufacturing so I know what I am talking about. Nikon of today is not the Nikon of 40 years ago.
@@russandloz I don't think Canon or Sony are any different. This lack of support and spares is a leaf out of Toyota's production philosophy. Any part produced must result in the manufacture of a whole unit. If and when the production lines were light on orders then they might let them produce spares for a short run. All Jap, US and even British manufacturing follow the same philosophy these days.
It seems Nikon learned nothing from the D600 days. They have a tinny advantage against Canon on this moment but Canon is coming with a new camera. If they know the shield is fragile they should have the parts in volume at all the repair centers. With such an experience I will not be surprised if they move to Sony.
