Wow, dude, this is the one of the best reviews on SS I've ever seen! I have been a fan of the series (especially Classics) for 15 YEARS (I'm 20 lol), and I've absolutely pleasured by this one vid! Not mindless shooter at all, as you've said - it's all about tactics, movement, rhythm and... One-liners also :) Great job!
Very nice and informative review, man! Feelings mutual about Sam, it's one of my favourite games. I'm glad some people like you devote your time to it!
Yeah, for some reason the newer serious sam version dont have the same fun factor as the originals. Playing coop with my brother and half my class from high school. Serious good times
Great video! Even though you didn't click with it, thanks for mentioning the network deathmatch. The community and competition back in the day was exciting and vibrant. Fond memories with the Complete Finishers!
Yeah, I also bought the Second Encounter first, that was actually my first own game. Though I tried TFE before that on the friend's PC and was blown away instantly by the scale of things happening on screen. After Doom and Quake 2 the graphics and the amount of enemies were just unbelievable. I somewhat regret sending this jewel case into dumpster along with the other hardcopies almost ten years ago.
26:45 this is probably my main reason why i love TSE even more than TFE. Even the reason why i love serious sam. Once their represent middle east theme. Croteam would never dissapointed me. Always magnificent!
this two games made me buy a PC, I was simply astonished back in the days when I saw it at one on my friends, I could not believe what was in front of my eyes
My childhood game, one of the very first games i've played when I got my first PC back in ~2001-2002ish and got First Encounter original disc at christmas, it was amazing and scary game at that time (now 24 years old). Played many hours, many many times replayed, numerous times with the 16 player multiplayer, the game didn't get boring at all. And ofcourse I was lucky to get the Second Encounter cheap so i've played the hell out of it and enjoyed it extremely aswell as the first one. Ah serious sam, such nostalgia, such a shame it didn't get much attention back then or now. Thanks for the informative review, I even learnt some new things after all these years haha (especially the part that at the second encounter there were 3 seperate time periods, i was quite shocked :D)
Honestly I think Serious was never even meant to be possible without knowing most secrets. Metropolis on Serious when you know where the secret cannon is isn't much worse than hard difficulty and in some parts is easier given your double ammo count but without the secret weapons I could see it being extremely difficult to beat the game. I much prefer serious difficulty over hard, if you know the game and are good with its mechanics and secrets then you can breeze through most of the game (the final gauntlet of the first game is a joke on serious because of insane amounts of cannon balls). But very, very good video. I always need more Serious Sam content in my life.
Yeah, you are right. Serious Sam games are very hardcore. While it looks like another mindless shooter, it actually isn't. The knowledge of ups and downs of your weapons is crucial. All enemies are unique and require their own strategy. And if you want to survive the large masses of different enemies, you have to quickly analyze your situation and set priorities to which enemies to kill first. Let's look at classic DooM. It IS a mindless shooter. You run around insanely fast, meaning that enemies will NEVER ever get dangerously close to you. You can use pretty much any weapon against pretty much any enemy. I haven't played much of Duke Nukem, but seeing as how similar to DooM it is, I'm pretty sure it is just as mindless. That's why I don't like it when people put SS as just another clone of those two. Serious Sam requires not only sharp shooting and fast reflexes, but also quick thinking, weapons management and control over the environment. Since in Serious Sam you CAN NOT run away.
I won't comment on the structural integrity of Duke Nukem's combat system, but DOOM is just more of a simple action shooter upon retrospect. I can't in good faith agree that it's mindless, as it laid the foundation of enemy balancing and prioritization even with its (initial, referring to DOOM 1) small enemy variety. Combat elements such as mixing projectile enemies with hitscan enemies, or balancing the weapons so that the player must deduct which weapon works best in the given situation. Serious Sam serves to accentuate these fundamentals of gameplay, albeit, in such a frantically difficult (and repetitive) manner, which is easy to see why it sits in more of a niche market. Nevertheless, the comparison to games such as DOOM or Duke Nukem are somewhat thinly-veiled, as made evident by the sheer scale and unrelenting pacing of the battles that take place.
Well, yeah, I guess it's just my poor choice of words. DOOM is very simplistic in terms of combat. Sure, the levels can be complex in terms of "Where the hell do I need to go?". And enemy prioritization is still there, but the main difference in gameplay is the moving speed. In DOOM you are superfast and enemies are very slow. In Serious Sam you have somewhat realistic movement speed, but the enemies are very quick. You have to kill things that approach you very quickly. And if you fail, then you are playing a dangerous game of circle strafing. In DOOM (and any other shooter with crazy-fast movement speed) circle strafing is not dangerous at all. Enemies like barons of hell or cyberdemons possess no threat whatsoever if you keep running around them. So yeah, it is simplistic. Which is not bad, it's just different.
@@BrickManLive It's not simplistic, what the hell are you talking about? DooM just isn't sadisticaly tiresome and cheaply hard. Since when the constant backpedaling back to the begining of the level become a complex game design? I love Serious Sam series and I know, that it requires a certain amount of skill and mostly patience, but calling it a shooter with clever design or putting it near the classics like DooM or Quake is a big stretch. Serious Sam is more like a parody of DooM, where everything is over the top and ridiculous, where devs just make fun of the players by being a total dicks, and that where the charm of this games is.
Ohey, quite a nice video I found here. Will be showing it to the rest of the team. :P Can't wait for the next, because SS2 is a thing. Also, I do play SS for the story. :P
+SolaisYosei Oh hai! Thanks for your input, currently in the process of writing the script for the next one. I'm waiting for the Serious Sam novel to be written at this point. Maybe get Jonas to do it.
I'm kind of late to gaming and Serious Sam classic the first encounter did become my introduction to first person shooters. I totally suck at it even playing on tourist but I don't care it's so much fun and so satisfying! I also downloaded some classic Doom games when steam had a sale but I haven't played him yet. I don't need a modern fancy expensive game that my computer couldn't even run it even if I could afford it I don't care if the graphics are good or any of that stuff I just want to murderize some monsters even if I'm really bad at it because no matter how lame I really am the structure of the game makes you feel like a badass! This might sound corny as hell and I'll probably get some hate for it but I'm FTM transgender and games like this really helped me cope with dysphoria!
I personally prefere Sam to Doom even if its a Doom clone. Its basically Doom gameplay wise but on steroids which make it really high on the arena shooter scale. I consider it even a parody of shooters because its so stupid and extreme on the meter. Thing is I never strafed, killed, switched weapons so much in my life and never a game gave me literally the world to fight against until Sam. There is so much a one man army can handle but serious sam still work without being too frustrating and the trolling the player moments just put a smile on my face. Seriously :p the ending levels from serious sam are my most epic moments in gaming and will probably still be. Seeing enemies far away and counting your kills ratio, trying to keep your kill ratio as good and fast as possible before they overwhelm you in sheer numbers, and just killing as fast as possible will not do it and then you need to actually start thinking what is the fastest way to kill more than they spawn and switch weapons, choose specific enemies, dont waste ammos on those or them, spacial awareness of who is behind and where, keep moving, all that in realtime and fast paced and the game is simple enough so you can do it. It keeps me awake way better than a coffee, Its so gud.
TSE always invokes strange feeling in my book. It's refreshing, bigger and better than TFE in pretty much every aspect, yet TFE is still my favorite in the series.
while sniper rifle is a good weapon, I think it cheapens the gameplay, especially considering how many fights are designed around it. it's not only more powerful than the rocket launcher, it's also hitscan. plus a lot of the enemies are spawned so far away as to make up for the inclusion of the sniper rifle that even trying to kill them with anything else is a recipe for disaster. same kind of goes for the powerups. sometimes TSE just throws the whole tension and "dancing with the enemies" away because of these inclusions. as for level variety, I feel that because TFE was so limited in its setting, that Croteam actually tried harder to make each level distinct. it creates a sort of paradox where, while there are three times as many settings in TSE, the levels within the first two eras all blend together, and the worst offender to me is the Persian episode. each level is so similar, and each one overstays its welcome. this is however made up for tenfold with the final three levels, which are perhaps the best Serious Sam has to offer, especially the Grand Cathedral
U know I rly liked SS in the old days when I was 13-15... Now I'm 31... And thanks to u bud I pushed myself to replay it. Long ago I played SS:FE HD and now Im ant SS:SE HD. And Im seriously pleased. The only thing I never liked about SS is the weapon sounds. For me they just lack the punch...
I know this has probably been said before, but your issue wasn't finding a working "rom" for an emulator, but the fact that there doesn't exist a definitive XBOX emulator yet. I know, it's hard to believe no one has put together a reliable emulator in the likes of Dolphin and PCSX2 for it yet, but that's why I eventually caved and bought an Original XBOX.
I like both serious Sam 1 and 2 My fevorite part for the first game is the split screen for same reason meny people forgaten in the order to play split the need go in the option and make the buttons in the first game but serious Sam 3 is not that great Ss 2 and ssHD don't have split screen The truth is my fevorite game of the series is serious Sam 2

I am so glad I found another person that loves both soundtracks for Dunes! Easily my favourite with only Great Pyramid coming close.
3:33 I think that's supposed to be a Biomech Minor.
FrameRater *major
Very nice and informative review, man! Feelings mutual about Sam, it's one of my favourite games. I'm glad some people like you devote your time to it!
I started playing Serious Sam when I was around 8 years old
Same
The intro for the 2nd encounter was so original. I bet they made that up on a fridaynight in the bar.
I'm still offended that they didn't remaster it for the HD remake.
Yeah, for some reason the newer serious sam version dont have the same fun factor as the originals. Playing coop with my brother and half my class from high school. Serious good times
Nothing wrong with that really...
Great video! Even though you didn't click with it, thanks for mentioning the network deathmatch. The community and competition back in the day was exciting and vibrant. Fond memories with the Complete Finishers!
this critique is solid

It's crazy how good lighting the classic Serious Sam games got!
Such a great video. I just love thease games, my childhood...
Always nice to see Serious Sam get some YT love. :)
this two games made me buy a PC, I was simply astonished back in the days when I saw it at one on my friends, I could not believe what was in front of my eyes
And you didn't even have to care about specs, the games ran on literally everything.
Great review, very professionally made :)

Too bad that it's too underrated....
You clearly explained almost everything about this game!
Great job!

I play Doom for the story

I agree on the coffee part
Pretty much anything that involves quick thinking+adrenaline is better than coffee
You can also play serious Sam 1st and 2nd encounter on android and iOS device.
16:57 never would have imagined that’s how you spell his name
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA Dune is my favorite song in the entire series
Just wanted to mention this is only single one review of any Serious Sam which tells you how small Croteam is
You always sound like you're on the brink of laughter, lol.
serious sam xbox is my favourite

can you do crysis?
I played serious sam on the playstation 2.

I like both serious Sam 1 and 2
My fevorite part for the first game is the split screen for same reason meny people forgaten in the order to play split the need go in the option and make the buttons in the first game but serious Sam 3 is not that great
Ss 2 and ssHD don't have split screen

Serious sam 2
Can you review Serious Sam XBOX
If there's a reliable method of emulating Serious Sam Xbox, maybe.
Serious Sacor
Ok unless you could use some footage but eh i dont know
serious sam starts of entertaining then gets really boring. Im hoping ss4 changes things up
Splendid video, buddy. Loved it.
