    An excellent ' Antonia' scene with three wonderful singers. Ileana Cotrubas had one of her greatest successes in this role and she sang it so beautifully.
    Some folks have suggested in the comments that she is over - acting, but I suspect that in the opera house her gestures were of the right size. When the camera shows some distance you can see how petite she appeared on the stage, also the scene was played in semi darkness to create a menacing atmosphere. In close up it may look exaggerated , but this was a performance that was filmed , rather than a film of an opera . Cotrubas is totally engaged and sincere in the role.

      I think the comments on her overacting are misplaced-Schlesinger seems to be basing this whole act on being influenced by the old silent horror movie "The Cabinet of Dr Caligari' and this suggest an hommage to that style

    The synch fault is not on the dvd, and, since this is being acted in a theatre, not for a movie or TV production, bigger expression and gestures are called for in a big house like Covent Garden ... Cotrubus had a stunning soprano, full of warmth and expressiveness.

    Roles (some of which are categorized together, having the same theme):
    E.T.A Hoffmann (lyric tenor)
    The Muse of Poetry (alto)
    Nicklausse (mezzo-soprano)
    The Four Villains - Lindorf, Coppelius, Miracle & Dappertutto (bass-baritone)
    The Four Servants - Andres, Cochenille, Frantz & Pittichinaccio (comic tenor)
    The Four Heroines - Stella (soprano), Olimpia (coloratura soprano), Antonia (lyric soprano) & Giulietta (dramatic soprano)
    The Four Additional Characters - Luther, Crespel, Schlemil (baritone) & Spallanzani (tenor)
    The Four Students - Nathanael (tenor), Hermann (baritone), Wilhelm (bass) & Wolfram (tenor)

      semiramide1945. Cotrubas retired when she no longer had her beautiful High E. In her prime she's had no equal in regards to La Boheme, Traviata Antonia Etc. My wife bought Traviata for me as a special gift on vinyl. Unfortunately there is NO DVD for Traviata. When DVDs were released with Cotrubas my wife would purchase those as well. My daughter loved her voice as well. MY only regret is that I never saw her perform live. She came to United States towards the latter part of her career. The common occurrence 4 great European singers. Ask any European that loves Opera if they liked Cotrubas and their answer will be absolutely. She performed in all the great Opera houses in Europe in her prime. That Beautiful lyric soprano voice that was so telling and true to the music. Only her Gilda was recorded for DVD in 1977 At the Met. By the early 80s her voice was already declining. But in the 70s she ruled in regards to her repertoire. Sincerely Arnold Bourbon Amaral

      I have the DVD my friend. Cotrubas is supreme . The ideal Antonia but she is the ideal everything after she sings her carefully chosen roles. I would highly recommend Cotrubas Gilda on DVD live from the MET. 1977. After 1982 Cotrubas had lost her High E or it was not as fluid as it was in the 70s.And she was seriously considered retiring by 1983. But like she herself said Her phone keep ringing etc. Cotrubas herself stated that her Boheme in 1977 at LA Scala was one of the better performances of Boheme & is on DVD as well with Pavarotti. Her Traviata is the most beautiful artistic portrayal of Violeta next to Callas.But unfortunately not on DVD sad to say. As you can see Cotrubas is my ideal lyric Soprano. LOL. Enjoy her Antonia. Covent Garden , Vienna, LA Scala were her favorite houses in Europe. Take care 😷 my friend. Arnold Bourbon Amaral

    IMO there should be no camerawork.
    This is an opera not a movie /film and close ups are an anachronism.
    Operas are meant to be viewed so that the entire stage can be seen at all time

    I completely disagree.

  • @clamdip2
    @clamdip2 12 лет назад

    I was forced to vote negatively on this because, despite my love for the scene, the sync between voice and acting was uncomfortably off and Antonia way overacted in the opening of the scene. She seemed to be in a silent film. But I don't blame her so much as the director. Too bad that the scene was so poorly presented.

  • @bergsygmail
    @bergsygmail 12 лет назад +1

    I agree with the negative views of clamdip2. The lack of sync was bad but Cotrubas' acting was worse -- chewing the scenery To add a nitpick, imho Cotrubas' voice is too strong for Antonia -- this is an ill woman, very conflicted, on the verge of death. I could see opening the scene with a weaker affect and maybe strengthening as she makes the decision to sing -- but not so strong throughout.
    It's not a role for Callas but she would know how to do it...
