John Stewart & Stevie Nicks - Gold

- Опубликовано: 13 окт 2024
- Gold was the first and most successful single of John Stewart's solo recording career (though he had other hits as a writer and as part of The Kingston Trio). On Gold, Stevie Nicks lends her terrific vocals to make the song distinctive and stand out. Lindsay Buckingham of Fleetwood Mac also played guitar on the track.
Lyrics:
When the lights go down in the California town
People are in for the evening
I jump into my car and I throw in my guitar
My heart beatin' time with my breathin'
Drivin' over Kanan, singin' to my soul
There's people out there turnin' music into gold
Well my buddy Jim Bass past he's a-workin' pumpin gas
And he makes two fifty for an hour
He's got rhythm in his hands as he's tappin' on the cans
Sings rock and roll in the shower
Drivin' over Kanan, singin' to my soul
There's people out there turnin' music into gold
Ah the California girls are the greatest in the world
Each one's a song in the making
Singin' back to me I can hear the melody
The story is there for the takin'
Drivin' over Kanan, singin' to my soul
There's people out there turnin' music into gold
Drivin' over Kanan, singin' to my soul
There's people out there turnin' music into gold
When the lights go down in the California town
People are in for the evening
I jump into my car and I throw in my guitar
My heart beatin' time with my breathin'
Drivin' over Kanan, singin' to my soul
There's people out there turnin' music into gold
Flyin' over Kanan, singin' to my soul
People out there turnin' music into gold
People out there turnin' music into gold
People out there turnin' music into gold
People out there turnin' music into gold, gold
People out there turnin' music into gold, gold
People out there turnin' music into gold, gold
People out there turnin' music into gold, gold
People out there turnin' music into gold, gold
People out there turnin' music into gold, gold
People out there turnin' music into gold, gold
Graduated in ‘79 rode the Kannan Agora pass on my Kawasaki Z1 most Sunday’s had to have my older girlfriend by my Margaritas at the Sagebrush Cantina as I was still 17. A lots changed since then but this song is still like nailing that long sweeper before the tunnel with a perfect apex.
I grew up, literally, on The Kingston Trio featuring John Stewart. Much love. He’s a legend.
Hey stevie I really am feeling a bit sad today listening to this song I'm dancing and singing this cool as song you rock I like your voice too thank you for cheering me up stevie you are my idol 4 life 🎉
Que vibe super positiva tem essa musica ✌🏻✌🏻
Loved this when it came out. I think their voices complement each other very well. It’s a shame that they didn’t collaborate more.
Stevie could harmonize with anyone she's just that talented. But yeah it would have been nice to hear more from these two.
There is Don Henley and Tom Petty of course...I agree this song is so well done.
As someone who has been a SICKLY OBSESSED Stevie fan for decades now (lol), sometimes I get sad to think that in the next 20 years I’ll sit down to listen these old jams and Stevie will have moved on to the next life. But so glad she got to grace the world with her voice on this go around.
Not anytime soon. She takes pretty good care of herself now
I wonder if there's video of them singing this live, It would sound awesome.
I like Stevie as well as the next guy, but do you think you could have placed a few pictures of the author and singer, John Stewart?? RIP ,John
It's a fair point but if you look at my channel, it's fairly Stevie-dominated/focused. I was highlighting her contribution to the song, because I love her voice. That said, most of the YT videos for the song that I have seen do not seem to have pictures of John Stewart, usually just lyrics. I may have to do a John Stewart video at some point.
@@MusicFan1977 awe absolutely love these pics of her . Stevie was out there turning music into GOLD.
The only reason this song was big because Stevie Knicks is in it and Lindsey Buckingham's playing lead guitar
@@johntoomey357 Now that's a stretch . Stewart was an accomplished singer/ songwriter /guitarist before anyone ever heard of Buckingham / Nicks. Do you think they would want to work with some beginner schmuck?
@@markyac I know that he was also in the Kingston trio But Buckingham played lead and Nick's did back up vocals on that album and they had Nick's background vocals loud so you could clearly hear her Stewart knew putting these two on this album would give him a hit and it did I don't understand how he got Buckingham and Nick's to work on that album together seen there was some bad blood between them at the time This album was after the rumors album I also think Mick Fleetwood Made a guest appearance on this album I could be wrong but you had Stewart lead Vocals guitars Lindsey Buckingham guitars Stevie Nick's background vocals I don't know who played bass or who played drums But I'm not knocking John Stewart at all he actually made a smart move adding Buckingham and Nick's to this album Gold was the biggest tune on it and you can hear Buckingham's lead guitar and Nick's voice on it and yes Stewart also played some lead guitar on the album too as well as lead vocals sorry I rambled but I just wanted to let you know about these sessions I don't know everything and you probably know more about Mr Stewart but I figure I would tell you what I know anyways Have A Great Day Sir
loved this one when it 1st came out & still do. Saw John on Solid Gold performing this song. Never realized Stevie was singing on this. Man, time flies so fast.
As a long time fan of Johnny Stew l do appreciate the attention he is getting.. ..but shouldn't he at least be pictured at least once.???..All hail Stevie????..I love her work..but this is in fact Stewart's song ...so how about a little love for him
OMG this brings back memories: Late 1970s, WBLM (107.5, Maine) on the car stereo and hearing that same haunting voice I'd heard in "Rhiannon," but back then I was a child and didn't know I was hearing Stevie Nicks. Love Stevie still.
Too bad John didn't get a few pictures thrown in, its his song
Their attempt to make him "disappear"
Great Song!
Awsome tune!
I loved this song when it first came out. Still do. I didn't realize Stevie sang on the song. I remember watching John on Solid Gold singing the song.
Happened to be working overnights at a local grocery store the other night, when this song came on. I have never heard it before. But man had me hooked!
And then Stevie comes in...... adore this 40 year old gem 💎
Me too!

How about Magnet and Steel .

yes a very great song,,,glad it soothes your soul
Great set of pictures. Super

I loved Fleetwood Mac and Stevie Nicks my whole life, but I had never heard this song until I was in the grocery store over the weekend lol. I recognized Stevie’s amazing voice
better late than never
What, you didn’t recognise Lindsey Buckingham’s guitar as well?
The same! My daughter and I were in Lowe’s last month and this came on. We recognized Stevie Nick’s voice and thought it had a little Fleetwood Mac influence but had no idea what song it was so we shazamed it. Such a great song.
Omg I heard this in the grocery store too!!!! Just last night. I have loved Stevie forever and never heard this. I stood there and thought this is Stevie! I know it! Stevie is trending!!!! 😂
@@davidsteer8142 It's not Buckingham.
Haven't heard this song in it's entirety in since it was on the radio. Every once in a while it just pops in my mind for some odd reason. Bever knew who the actual artist was until now. I still hear Stevie Nick's voice. She has true passion for music and you could hear it in the voice. Glad I looked the up the song
"Californian girls are the greatest in the world,
Each one a song in the making ".
One of my all time fav lyrics !
I liked the one about the guy working in the gas station.
John Stewart wrote one of the best songs!--Daydream Believer!💗
KOOL 😎
Great times. Great music. What the hell has happened to this world.? 'They' sucked the fun out of it!

I can relate...where is the fun indeed!
Was this Stevies first big thing, I think I was listning to this before I was 12, in the car in Colorado. I was born in 58. Loved the song, turns out the music was priceless.
ONE BIG ANSWER: GREED! Instead of a president, we now elect a Financial Leader... someone to decide how our tax dollars are to be wasted! Prices began to skyrocket in the late 70s and 1980s, bacause workers wanted paid more, investors wanted more return on the money and CEOs were suddenly being paid MILLIONS of dollars per year!
.... Instead of putting the USA First in everything, our tax dollars began going overseas! Foreign Workers began pouring into the US and senring 95% of their earningd home, instead of spending it Here! That's why the US Dollar is now the world's main currency!
.... GREED sent millions of good paying US Jobs to countries where workers are paid in pennies! I remember how sad I felt when I saw a photo of "The LAST U.S. Made Television", at the Zenith Electronics plant! The US now has few "true manufacturing" jobs that don't involve the harvesting of our Natural Resources! We now cut our trees and send the lumber to other countries to be made into furniture, which is sold back to us! HOW can it be cheaper to send lumber around the world, than to make furniture here? The same ideal applies to metals, glass and plastics! These and others ideals have changed our country and not for the better!
..... Immorality has been a mainstream issue for several decades! Remembering when you couldn't say "Damn" on TV? Now you can say nearly anything you want, EXCEPT for "God snd Jesus"! I often see movie scenes where those two words are bleeped or silenced! We WORRY about offending those whom hate us.... how stupid is that?
.... Let's BUY U.S. and bring our jobs home! Let's worry more about us, instead of the poor people of Country X! Let's stop bleeding our economy by allowing Billions to be sent overseas every year! Let's stop the flood of illegals, pouring across our border and stop supporting those that are here already! Let's make the USA Number One on our list again!
@@jamesbaird8574 This was well after Stevie was established. It came out after the white Fleetwood Mac album and Rumours in the same year as Tusk (1979). Unless you are talking outside of Fleetwood Mac. Even then, Walter Egan's Magnet and Steel with Stevie was a hit prior to this song. It does predate her solo albums though.
globalism takeover mate
Wow...listening to these great songs during the pandemic, always loved this tune! Stevie's vocals added so much on this. So many good memories. Used to play it down in California when it came out. A friend of mine's band did a cover of it as well and had added an extended jam in the middle. Decided to add it to our version too-Am-F for awhile (ha ha) , just nice and tasteful in the beginning and built it into a nice climax. The audiences always seemed to dig it and it didn't detract from the song.
John used to do extended jams live . . .
I did that during the pandemic too ❤️. I binged on ABBA!
@@imoldgreggboosh3467 Oh really? Cool-"Gold" does lend itself to doing a good jam. As I recall this was a pivotal song for John Stewart, he told his wife if the song didn't chart well he'd quit the music business. We know how that turned out!
I was in high school when this came out . It was a HUGE AM Radio hit here in Chicago (really one of the last ones on WLS).
I was about 9 but I remember it.
That story is soo hetero.
Yes, it was. Grew up listening to WLS.
This song came out at the end of my 8th-grade school year, and was popular that summer before my freshman year in high school. What an exciting time to come of age --- truly.
I was nearing the end of 7th grade myself.
@@MusicFan1977 Actually, I messed up in my calculation --- I was at the end of 7th grade too. I didn't begin high school until fall of 1980.
@@issues9828 me too; high school same year.
You really can’t sleep on Lindsay’s production on this either.
It’s a masterpiece.
There will never be a Decade like The 70's, unbelievable....
Listened to this about a week ago and it was the first time I heard it in many years now I can't get out of my head love it
Where's John Stewart in the picture show? It's his song after all. lol
It's my version of Where's Waldo. If you take a look at my channel, you will see it features Stevie Nicks, hence the focus. In subsequent Stevie duets (like WheneverI Call You Friend), I have been more even with the photos selected.
The puppet masters want him to "disappear"
I been listening to GOLD for two days running now . There are people out there turning music 🎶 into GOLD. I absolutely love this beat ♥️♥️🎼🎼
1979 and I just got my license. This was on the radio; KZEW and KTXQ, Dallas Fort Worth
Had this in my head for 2 days running now. GAWD I MISS THE GOOD OLD DAYS when music had SOUL!!!!!!!
Back when there WAS music ay ? Oooof they think hitting play and rewind makes an artist these days I see.......lol
Hell yeah that's where it's at brother!🤟
It has been in my head 7 days now~ glad not to be alone on this.
It is so true !!!! And this is such a great song!!!
Yea and that was just one of the run of the mill pop songs that we took for granted back then. Like they were going to keep coming and getting better. By the late 70s analogue was sounding so damn good.
Holy crap this was in my recommendations, and for once they hit gold!! Literally. Haven't heard this song in decades...65 yrs. old now. But I remember hearing it on the old FM car radio. Excellent song for the times, I miss them so. Still have the music and the memories. Memories fade but the music lives on.
Heard this song all the time when I was 6 years old. When I first heard it at 6, I really loved it and still do to this day as an adult. I also love Stevie Nicks and fleetwood mac and how Stevie does back up in this song with her awesome voice. I enjoy all the Stevie Nicks pictures as well. Awesome photos.
But she's not doing backup she's actually a guest star on this track it's different than doing back up
For no particular reason I decided to look for this song. Didn't know the title, only that it was done by one of the Stewarts, but didn't know which one, just that it wasn't Al or Rod.
Finally found it by searching for the only thing about it that I remembered, the opening lyrics.
Well, here it is. Used to be a staple of Top 40 radio back in the day, which, as far as my memory goes, was just yesterday. Somehow, the song just disappeared, haven't heard literally in decades, not even on Oldies radio.
Thanks to the internet and YT, I and millions of others, can indulge in these musical trips down memory lane. Just a little sobering that the idols of your youth are now in their seventies, some pushing eighty, the hot birds you lusted after as a high schooler are either grandmas or dead (RIP Farah Fawcett). Not sure how this is even possible, when I am still so young, and not sixty at all!
Maybe all this nostalgia is not altogether healthy, but at least we'll always have the music.
I am sorry to hear that John Stewart has passed from our lifeline,if it is TRUE thanks John for the Music. DOBIE WAN KANOBIE❤
Love all the Stevie pics! Thank You!
there's no two that look exactly alike.
Love this song, hadn't heard it in a long time, just heard it on radio and looked it up here!
amazing been buzzing around my head for a week too!!!!!!!!!
Great song with a great beat to it and having the beautiful and talented Stevie Nicks singing back up with Lindsay Buckingham on guitar makes it a classic.
Buckingham on rthymn guitar, John Stewart lead.
Been listening to this song since it first came out and my Dad loved it- I was around six years old! Really good music never gets old and I’m still jamming on this in late 2023!
Ya can't argue that this song is just plain happy as all Hell. I can be pissed off as shit, and put this on and I smile. 😏😂🤭😎🤓😉🤫
Wow! I liked this song so much back when it was released, but never knew the artist, nor the Buckingham/Nicks connection. Hearing it again (2024) was like unlocking part of my brain; sure am glad you posted this!
Same here! I loved it but had not a clue as to who sang it. I'm 57 and am a total classic rock lover. Stevie has always mesmerized me! Thank God for this collaboration! They were turning music into Gold!❤❤❤
💯
A big hit for John reached number 4 on Billboard pop singles chart in 1979 Stevie backup vocals RIP John
Thank You!
Stevie Nicks is one of my favorite female singers LOVE HER VOICE
RASPY VOICE BEFORE IT WAS THE NORM!
Same with me! Always loved her voice since i first heard of her since I was a child. Stevie is a favorite singer of mine also.
Some of the greatest Stevie photos of all time.
And Lindsey's guitar is murder.
That's Dean L. Adds the photos in time with the music, don't know where he gets them...Subscribe he does an incredible job!.
She gives Tom Petty a look in the video for Stop Dragging My Heart Around that is one of the sexiest things I've ever seen.

John Stewart wrote Daydream believer, which was a number one hit for the Monkees in 1967 and a number three hit for Anne Murray in 1979. He also wrote Runaway train, a number one county hit for Roseanne Cash in 1988.

I've no heard this in many years I had forgotten just how good it is wot a great song
I don't like this post because it makes others think it was all about Stevie Nicks, when in fact she only provided background vocals.
Give Stevie her due. She turned a good song into a great song - one of the best voices in all of rock and roll.
Very true but it's Stevie nicks even though she's well-loved always gets the limelight.
I heard he wrote the song about Stevie and Buckingham?
The person that posted this video has posted her disclaimer on why only Stevie pics. 😂

@@MusicFan1977 I was in First. Still makes me feel old though.
Just found out that John Stewart wrote, 'Daydream Believer'...you learn something new everyday.
I agree with you Mark Yac!! For real.....and Stevie is my girl! Love her to pieces but she's not the only one singing this one!!
It is very difficult to find this earlier recording on a music platform. It was lost in a re-recording of this song after the original record label failed. They used a different singer than Stevie Nicks. Both Stevie Nicks and Lyndsey Buckingham had a big role in making this record. They discovered John Stewart and were celebrity patrons at the beginning of Stewart’s career.
What!? They discovered John Stewart!? He was a star well before they were.
John Stewart wrote Day Dream believer for the monkeys. His songs were well known but recorded by others. He put out Al ins in the early 70’s.
Are you stoned??? Stevie and Lindsey "discovered" John Stewart??? Gimme a break! Much as I like both Stevie and Lindsey, the fact is John was already a well-established artist - the lead singer for the Kingston Trio, no less - clear back in the early 60s, when both Stevie and Lindsey weren't much more than 12 years old!
Man, I haven't heard this since it was originally a big hit in summer '79. I was eighteen, that final year of fun before the real world starts to close in on ya.
Kanan is also a road in the Agoura Hills California
To the beach!!! Grew up in Ventura Cty.
Is there any significance to that particular road in the theme of this song? I thought I read that wealthier people and certain night spots were located on the other side of Kanan Rd and that not-as-well-off people lived in the side of Kanan Stewart was driving over. Just curious.
Thanks for enlightening me,
Always wondered about that.CB

Lucky to have had a chance to hear him in a small club in Toronto in the 1980s with a pathetically small audience on a cold December night close to Xmas. Of course he did this as his encore
Where did he play? The El Mo? I'm from Toronto too.
@@MusicFan1977 It was some club west on College St that I had never been to before or since. Never heard of it before, Perhaps why no one went. He was sure shocked when he saw the small crowd! But he played like a pro despite his obvious disappointment.
I heard this song on Fishcenter Live. Badass song. CHEERS
I always loved the "ooh yeah!" at 3:16

This is by far the best display of Stevie pics I've seen ever. And I don't think any pics are repeated. Thanks man!
Flashback to 79 when I graduated from Wildwood High School and cruised the beach and boardwalk.
John Stewart, Sniff 'n' the Tears, Flash in the Pan...at the time all presumably one hit wonders got me through high school....turn it up and break off the knob.
Flash In The Pan is a name that I haven't heard since high school. Came right back to me though. Wow.
John Stewart made over 30 albums and wrote way over 300 songs. One hit wonder? He wrote "Daydream Believer" (no. 1 for Monkees), "Runnaway Train" (no. 1 for Roseanne Cash), and had 2 other top 40 hits himself. Also Billboard put his album "California Bloodlines" on one of their top 100 lists.
He had (and still does) a loyal 'cult' following. I went to 23 of his concerts in the 70s cause I couldn't get enough of his guitar work (in concert he would do long complex guitar solos that never appeared on his albums). He was a total axemaster.
How I miss him . . .

This song is such a classic that I will always enjoy. As bad as Stevie Nick's is, John Stewart makes this song, stevie is the beautiful ribbon on the cake, just beautiful together!!! 😊
Fabulous video. Very creatively done. Been a fan of Stevie Nicks since I was around 12/13 years old. I'm middle aged now.
I am from a different perspective. Being a vocalist in my younger days, and she was such a prolific writer, with so much work to hear. If you go by her immense catalogue of music (not her lifestyle choices), she was a wonderful influence for teenage girls like myself back then. We hadn't seen someone like her before, who was so talented, wrote everything herself, and made the music world stand up and take a look.
Sure women like the Wilson sisters in Heart were good. But they were not nearly as huge as song writers, as Nicks' was back in their heyday. Plus for several years, Stevie had a successful solo career, along with FWM. And her sense of style I've always loved. Stevie Nicks was the complete package. Beautiful, talented, and hard working...🎶💜🎵🎼
