Joan Ussher Sharkey wrote a fantastic book on the Guinness estate in St Annes, very much worth a read.

Thank you, Robert. Informative and entertaining as always.
JF Fuller was the architect behind many ‘Guinness’ works- many know that in addition to Ashford Castle he remodeled the interior of Iveagh House, re-worked St. Anne’s in the Italianate style, remodeled and extended Farmleigh and a Guinness home at Lower Leeson St. The Superintendent’s Lodge and the SE entrance gates & railings in St. Stephen’s Green also are Fuller’s work.
Family succession - Arthur did not work well with his younger brother, Edward Cecil who had been his father’s p.a. for years and as a result between 1877- 1880 sold him his share in the business in tranches for £680,000. That allowed Arthur/Ardilaun (title taken from an island in the lake) to concentrate on making Ashford the best woodcock shoot in the country in its day - the grounds were laid out and managed specifically for woodcock. Peter Bacon’s book ‘Land, Lust & Gun Smoke’ has great detail on the shooting and social life at Ashford.

Dear Bob, Yes Fuller's memoirs Omniana are well worth reading, not least because he writes disparagingly of Ld Ardilaun (his former client) without actually giving his name!

I saw the guestbook for St Anne’s and it was poignant to see my ancestors (parents and children) as week guests in 1903. They appear later in photographs from Farmleigh in the 1930’s.

Saddening that we can't preserve beautiful things in Ireland.
