  • The Mercedes-Benz G-Class, or G-Wagon has been in production since 1979 and the basic mechanics remain unchanged. With three locking differentials, this body-on-frame truck is capable of climbing almost anything. It's known as a status symbol but at its core, it still loves the mud.
    Competitors to the Mercedes G-Class are the Range Rover, Range Rover Sport,Land Rover Defender, Land Rover LR4, Land Rover Discovery, Jeep Rubicon, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Porsche Cayenne, VW Touareg, Toyota FJ Cruiser, Ford Raptor, Toyota Tacoma TRDpro, Nissan Xterra, Toyota Land Cruiser, Lexus LX470

    And this year Mercedes made absolute record , sold 20 000 vehicles.
    It looks like G will live forever. Which means today prices will be nothing compared to the one tomorrow :)

    How capable a vehicle is, ultimately comes down to how skilled the driver behind the wheel is. The only G wagons you will see out on the trails are 20-10 year old ones. By all means great truck all around. I'll say the closest competitor to this truck would be the 76 series Land Cruiser but we don't get it in North America, Australians love it.

    You can diff lock most 4x4's, so a Suzuki vitara front and rear diff locked with decent tyres could do that incline I would imagine.

    The G Class combines elements of Mercedes Benz cars throughout the decades. The body is solid like a W123. The interior is light and airy like an R129. The gadgets are straight out of the latest Benz models with the fancy screens and buttons. Spec it with the 5.5 L V8 and you got a symphony to match. For those in the comments section complaining about the price tag and comparing it to other cars, please read this comment to educate yourselves.

    Cars were narrower and wheel width also closer than what is now. So, roads out there are still narrow due to those roads were trotted by these earlier day vehicles, and that gives them additional advantage besides being light and manageable.

  • @canto_v12

    If you wanted to off-road, you wouldn't do it to a $100,000 luxury car. But you still know that it could, and that's what this car is selling. Call it image, call it a poseur's car, but that's the reality of something so expensive.
    Want to off-road for real, buy a Wrangler and save the G-wagen for the ski resort.

    I can't wait to get my G63 in april. You bet i'm going to take it off road plus towing my wake boat. The frame rails and 3 locking diffs are what sold me. I wouldn't dare tow my 6000lb boat with a unibody suv. It sickens me that the G wagon is associated with the Kardashians and others who don't really know what this vehicle can do. Next for me after the G wagon is the Unimog.

    You're talking all about the fancy high end G-classes. But the line starts with 80,000€ for the 350d professional which has already 245 hp and all the stuff you need for real off roading.
    Maybe this version is not on the north american market because of it's diesel engine.

    don't know why so many get excited about having front & rear lockers. most 4wd's have rear lockers as standard and it takes less than $1,000 to add a front locker. All genuine 4wd's have a center locker. Don't get me wrong, the G is a nice 4wd but you can usually tell someome has no idea about true offroading (not climbing kerbs in the carpark) when they say this is the most capable 4wd

    was great but the buyers who made it more a status symbol made Mercedes-Benz rethink over it. They lowered it due to the sports lovers in the G63 and G65 flavors. Trust me Mercedes-Benz can make the best off road vehicles and if you don't believe me the G63 6x6 and the G500 4x4 is answer

    Many people say that this car is built like a tank. But one accident in London, a G500 squared flipped over just 1 roll, and the roof to A pillar started to bend. I look at Volvo XC90 roll over test, the XC90 actually flipped like 4-5 rolls, and there was no bend at all to the roof or any pillar. Is it a lemon tank?

    • @charles-davidberube1174
      @charles-davidberube1174 7 лет назад +4

      V.C. Well to be honest, a fully loaded golf is miles ahead competition.
      The g wagon is also much more capable than the competition. It has 3 locking differentials, nobody has that. It's narrow and it's basically a tank for the common people. Having tried both a modded jeep and a g class, the g is much more capable and will crawl anywhere you want it to. The only problem is that i was scared of breaking it considering the price tag.
      But at work, one of our clients has a g 63 wagon and goes in heavy off roading, every panels on his truck are damaged but he has the money and is changing for a g 65 amg.
      I guess the g class is off roader for the rich. Saying it's a bad truck, its being jealous

    • @gogutzy
      @gogutzy 7 лет назад

      1. a fully loaded golf is actually a fully loaded skoda octavia.
      2. a tank for common people? - land cruiser prado or v8.
      3. heck, if you have the money to throw away after each off road session everything is a good offroader. simply because it's expensive doesn't make it good, it just makes it a status symbol. and the price tag definitely does not reflect any improvements compared to a land cruiser, that also has 3 locking diffs, and crawl control for that matter - talk about technology and reliability.

    • @charles-davidberube1174
      @charles-davidberube1174 7 лет назад +3

      V.C. Well they don't do the land cruiser anymore. It must mean something.
      I can't talk about the skoda. In canada we don't have it so the golf is our only german small car and it destroys the competition(mazda 3, honda civic, ford focus, etc)
      Talking about reliability, the g wagon is 30 years old, mechanically there is nothing to break so during a session of off roading, nothing will stop you.
      You're just jealous and probably British.

    • @gogutzy
      @gogutzy 7 лет назад

      well, not british, eastern european, and while canada may have treacherous winters, eastern europe has bad streets, bad fuels, bad maintenance products, bad traffic conditions, worse drivers and a hell of a smaller wallet than other countries. So when we think about buying a car, you can bet it's a documented decision.
      about building land cruisers, in eastern europe we get the 150 and the V8, both matching the G in terms of luxury. Australians also get the 70 series, because heck, they actually need it.
      I've been driving german cars my whole life and honestly, i've become used to the fact that they will start eating up your wallet after 120.000 km. I currently drive a german car, and the only reason i keep it is for the japanese engine in it.

    G-Class is the ONLY kind of luxury 4x4 or non-luxury G-Professional 4x4 aka military version of the G-Class could drive up and down the Schockl Mountain in Graz Austria at speeds of 50 mph without falling apart. Yet the G-Class test drivers are driving these Gwagons on the Schockl Mountain 3 times a day up to 6 months on the same vehicles. That's a tough vehicle! The G-Class is overpriced? Well if they removed all the military parts underneath the luxury G-Class then sure the vehicle will be as cheap as a GL-Class or an ML-Class. These luxury Gs are built on the same factory production line as the military Gs with the same military parts as the military Gs underneath which makes them expensive. GWAGONS ARE ALSO HAND BUILT FROM THE GROUND UP. :)

    30+ year-old car with few facelifts along the way. Still sells for 150k. Madness.

      So? The dodge challenger hellcat is a car built on a 30 years old chassis (1990 Mercedes E class) and they sell it for 100k.

    • @kmier2000
      @kmier2000 7 лет назад

      Just so you know, you are comparing a new car built built on an old chassis with an old car with new headlights.

    • @Erich2142
      @Erich2142 7 лет назад +5

      Kris Mier Its not an old car with new headlights! Go to any Mercedes dealer and look at the new G class, and compare it to the old G class. Just because the shape is the same, doesn't mean the body panels are 100% exactly the same.

      billcounterstrike I live in LA and I always see women driving g wagons.Can you explain why a lot of people refer to soccer moms?

    • @billcounterstrike
      @billcounterstrike 7 лет назад +1

      Հովհաննես Հովհաննիսյան alright, so the stereotype is that white rich moms in LA take their kids to soccer games (soccer BC it's one of the more popular child team sports, baseball is another sport too, but the stereotype is soccer) in these G wagons to show off their wealth and status in society, competing with the other rich young moms in LA. Hope this clears things up for you.

    A Jeep would literally do all the same things, for literally a 1/8 or less price. Get a stock Cherokee, get locking diff's, and your set, for a fraction of the cost.

      had a stock cherokee, spent more time at dealers repair shop; changed body style, which made it obsolete.
      G wagon body style holds value, while engine/interior changes. where is jeep cherokee in 2018? obsolete.
