  • Cecylia Maria Roszak was a nun belonging to the Congregation of the Sisters of Saint Dominic. She was acknowledged as the world's oldest, cloistered nun in the last years of her life. During World War II, she helped a dozen or so Jews who had come to the convent in Kolonia Wileńska (which is today in Lithuania) together withother Dominican nuns.

My professor at a state university almost 50 years ago invited me to lunch when he learned I was a devout Catholic. He told me that his life was saved because his Jewish parents entrusted him to Catholic Nuns in France during World War Two. He said that I should do whatever I could for the Church because it is a great religion. I will never forget that.

This is a beautiful story of sacrifice. It's what love looks like in action.
My grandmother's sister and cousin were Dominican teaching nuns in the US. My great-aunt only lived to be about 80 or so, but her cousin died shortly before she would have been 105 or 106, I forget now. She died in about 2008. She was in the news a year before her death because she went to the movie theater for the first time in her life at age 104. She had poor eyesight and didn't have any interest in trying to watch a movie on the big screen for most of her life, but that was the year that a movie about the Nativity of Jesus came out at Christmas, and she was convinced to go listen to it, even if she couldn't see it very well. I used to go look at that news video once in a while for years, but it's been taken down for a long time. It was somewhere in Michigan. Her name was Sister Leonita Noetzel. I can't find any information on her now. Another news story about her said she was one of two nuns in the order who tried different teaching methods for reading, and they had the most success with the phonics approach. So they designed a phonics reading program, and then gave away the copyright so it could be implemented in all schools.

Thank you for promoting these wonderful Polish people! Sister Boniszewska, Alicja Kotowska and now Maria Roszak. By the way, Sister Cecylia wasn't exactly the oldest nun. Lucile Randon (1904-2023) was. Anyway, you're doing a great job! May all those Saints you show in your videos remember about you in their heavenly prayers ❤ Sister Cecylia, pray for us 🙏✝

My grandmother's sister and cousin were both Dominican teaching nuns. Aunt Sister Norbert was uncomfortable when her traditional habit was shortened to reveal her legs. Some time after she died at the age of about 80, the teaching Dominicans of her order switched to pantsuits. Then they no longer took teaching positions in Catholic schools, as so many Catholic schools closed. The Dominican nuns switched focus to social justice work funded largely by the nuns working in secular jobs while living in community, wearing pantsuits. I followed them on Instagram, and when they posted about hashtag Meatless Mondays, I responded, "We're Catholic. We observe meatless Fridays." They didn't reply. The order that was full when my great-aunt and her cousin were wearing their traditional habit is struggling to remain in business. Most of the nuns are in retirement homes. They were so thrilled to get a new nun about 8 years ago. The first to make vows in at least a decade. And the reason she wanted to join the order is so she can do social justice work, advocating for (not actually assisting) "the poor and marginalized," and lobbying for efforts to combat global warming. @@carolynkimberly4021

I've read that during German occupation she was hiding not only Jewish children, whose parents were murdered, but also a group of 15 members of Jewish secret scaut organization, among whom there were also members of the resistance movements established in three Jewish ghettos (ghettos in Wilno, Warszawa and Białystok). For that, this Polish Dominican nun was also awarded in 1984 a title "Rightous Among the Nations" by the Israeli Yad Vashem institute. She died in 2018, being then the oldest Catholic nun in the world.

@@JeromeChong97 Yes, I really like history, indeed - not only of my country (which was for centuries very difficult), but generally as well. And even when reading about various saints of our Church, it's always good to know the context of their lives, to be able to understand better their sacrifices and hardships they went through in their lives. So history is connected with it also.
