I'm definitely voting Labour, but I have to admit I was hoping got a bit more substance from their manifesto on "closing tax loopholes and taxing non-dom". I feel like we hear on this all the time, with little on HOW to do it...
Agree totally.Britain has a myriad of loopholes or exemptionsfor both corporations and millionaires which is great for our Accountants but loses the nation billions in taxes. Taxing the poorest levels of society may be easier for HMRC but it is inequitable and needs urgent action.
@@schofield4836I know I’m not the person you asked but since it’s the point of this space, I’m going to contribute as someone who also plans to vote Labour but hopes they continue to improve as a party. Frankly, simply trying to “control” immigration doesn’t work. Historic trends show us that generally net migration into the UK goes up when things are going well and it goes down when things are going very badly. The reality is we’re experiencing a labour shortage and for whatever reason may be the case per individual job, not enough people already in the country can be found to fill those roles. The asylum system under the Tories has become an absolute shit show, so we can’t even find the people who don’t have legitimate claims and sort them from those who do. “Deterrents” like the Rwanda scheme don’t work because people will just come anyway and chances are we can’t even get any significant number of people sent there (even leaving aside the morality and the money it’s wasting). Funnily enough, for all the right hates the issue, if you’re worried about immigration, you should really be worried about climate change because as parts of the world become increasingly inhospitable because of floods, droughts, temperature extremes, etc, more people will be looking for somewhere to relocate to. We have to address the root causes of the multitude of problems we face as a nation and as a world. People like Sunak/Braverman/Farage are all about superficial proposals that don’t actually fix the real problems.
Great podcast. Thank you. One thing that concerns me is that you highlight the complexity and nuance of making manifesto commitments, yet dealing with existing commitments and that the reality will likely change what can be delivered. Makes me wonder how we the electorate are supposed to really use and trust the manifestos?! They're just a statement of intent yet they're delivered and promoted with such specificity!!
I Australia we pay a Medicare Levy (of 2% ? I think) on all taxpayers. It pays for our Universal Health care. Unfortunately Govt also fund Private Health funds which is a conservative legacy. Hard to wind back.
Labour have badly misjudged the mood of the people and have missed the opportunity to produce a radical and progressive manifesto and will find themselves restricted in what they can do moving forward.
Would really appreciate a segment on one show where you discuss some of the smaller parties, particularly those that aren't one-issue parties, think SDP, People Before Profit, CPA, etc.
I'm one of the rare people trying to read most of the manifestos. It's a rough job though, I wouldn't wish it on others. Labour's manifesto feels as sparse as they promised. Given that they are safe in my seat, I think I might have to vote for someone else. And they do have a standard, more traditional PDF of their manifesto, you just have to dig into the 'accessibility' section to find it.
As someone who voted remain it frustrates the life out of me that Alastair never takes any accountability for how his labour government contributed to the anti-immigration and distrust in politics that in my opinion decided brexit. It is as if he thinks politics exists in a vacuum. The sooner he understands his own role the better
Tax are high in UK now because of mismanagement of Tories if labour increases taxes it will mean that their is a problem in the economy rather than a problem with how Tories have ruled in the past 14 years
I should like to see an end to fossil-fuel subsidies, windfall taxes imposed on fossil-fuel company profits (nudging them to invest more in renewables), an increase in capital gains tax for higher earners, a reevaluation of council tax on large properties, and a proper withholding tax on overseas investors (if Kenya and Nigeria can do it, we can). Might be a good idea to start cleaning up tax havens, too.
Had a look at a few of the manifesto's. On my mobile I googled the Tory manifesto, and it went straight to a PDF with tiny text. When I searched for Labour it was mobile optimized with text large enough to read. Reform says there one is only a working draft and it won't be finalized till later this year. And the Reform tagline is "The Immigration Election".
The Tories manifesto is just more of the same: Higher mortgage costs if government borrowing drives up interest rates. Worse public services if civil service jobs are cut. Fewer job opportunities and higher costs for businesses if immigration is severely restricted. Slower progress on renewable energy and environmental goals. Public concensus suggests that improving underfunded public services like healthcare and getting timely hospital appointments is a major concern for voters, more so than tax policies being proposed. The Tories and their manifesto continue, as always, to ignore or fail to adequately address the need for improving struggling public services in areas like healthcare, education, criminal justice, and local government.
Lib dems should lean into voting reform much much much more. They should clearly state that they demand voting reform as a condition of being in any government. FPTP is the root cause all other governmental problems stem from. Things won't be perfect after reform of course, but politics will actually function well and therefore other reforms can be put through faster.
As above, this is exactly what happened in 2010. Unfortunately, the naïve LibDems thought that the Tory supporting media would actually publicise such a thing… Which of course, they didn’t. Meaning that most people didn’t even know it was happening, hence it had a tiny turnout.
I am an ordinary person and i have always read manifestos. I now live abroad and flirt around politics and I still read uk manifestos because i know it is read here and sometimes copied. Especially conservatives wedge policies.
No money? They both say that but they don’t say WHY there is no money and where it’s all gone. The answer to that is it’s in the pockets of the super wealthy elite. The Tories have presided over the biggest movement of wealth from ordinary people to the super wealthy in history. The solution? Twofold. 1. A wealth tax. 2. Proportional representation.

@@At0micFruitthey’re not really manifestos though, they’re just booklets of ideas that they know will never be implemented so they don’t worry about it making sense or being costed etc
I thought they were cooking pots!
Someone tell Alistair he isn’t being paid to campaign for labour anymore 😂
Loving the amount of content
Thanks for the insight and update on the manifestos!
I would love an episode digging into the smaller party manifestos in a little more detail and discussing the impact that they can potentially have. For example, could a popular LibDem policy provide any influence on the direction of the next Labour government?
How to eat an elephant -one mouthful at a time‼️ A journey of a lifetime begins with a single step. I think we need to give him his chance and we’ll see how radical he is carrying out his vision. I believe he will surprise us in a good way through the decisions he will make. KEEP THE FAITH‼️
You seriously think he'll get elected and then suddenly become a radical? Boy, you're in for a HUGE disappointment.
For god’s sake’s . Don’t mention elephants.( in the room or out ) . Fictional weapons of mass destruction don’t go away with mass hypnosis and any talk of that type ain’t helping any .
I work in public affairs. I’ve read all the manifestos. Not sure what that says about me !😂
Rory should take his pots to antiques roadshow
Is RS a borrower or is that a really big mug......
Where did Rory buy his mug from?
He borrowed it 😜
Rory’s pots have totally upstaged the manifestos! They’re huge 😲
Now those are some solid pots! Definitely not disappointed after all this suspense
Very nice pots. Well worth the wait.
Alistair has taunted Rory if he will vote Labour, but what about turning the question round? If Rory was Conservative leader, would Alistair vote Tory?
Fair play, that man clearly knows his pots!
Thank you
I'm definitely voting Labour, but I have to admit I was hoping got a bit more substance from their manifesto on "closing tax loopholes and taxing non-dom". I feel like we hear on this all the time, with little on HOW to do it...
Well this may be a more Budget announcement
@@adamgrimsley2900 Hope so! I feeling like both parties use this a 'black hole' for grabbing money out of nowhere all the time.
Agree totally.Britain has a myriad of loopholes or exemptionsfor both corporations and millionaires which is great for our Accountants but loses the nation billions in taxes. Taxing the poorest levels of society may be easier for HMRC but it is inequitable and needs urgent action.
Aren’t you worried about immigration?
Rory's coffee mug is bigger than his face.
New names Bill and Ben! Rory Pot men
Rory gets his mugs from the same place as James O'Brien
I listened to this on iTunes and then came here JUST to see the pots!
Is the Tory party the only group offering pensioners any guarantees on income - Labour keeps talking about ‘working people’
@Simbad.. they are only talking of State Pension. Not all the pensions this group may have earned.
I Australia we pay a Medicare Levy (of 2% ? I think) on all taxpayers. It pays for our Universal Health care. Unfortunately Govt also fund Private Health funds which is a conservative legacy. Hard to wind back.
How big is Rory’s mug! Forget the pots
Love the pots!!!
Rory illustrating the 'Ming vase' political theory, with props.
Labour have badly misjudged the mood of the people and have missed the opportunity to produce a radical and progressive manifesto and will find themselves restricted in what they can do moving forward.
Finally seen the pots
You wait all week for a TRIP and then three come along at once! 😊
I love Rory ! Look at those pots !
THE POTS !!!
Would really appreciate a segment on one show where you discuss some of the smaller parties, particularly those that aren't one-issue parties, think SDP, People Before Profit, CPA, etc.
Love Rory’s pots, he has such distinguished taste 🤤
Yes about healthy food being a priority. Savings outweigh costs long term…
Love those pots 😂
They are very nice pots but agree with Alastair that I wouldn't pay a grand for some pots.
Labour have become centre right ( purging the left) , tories have become right - right
As someone who voted remain it frustrates the life out of me that Alastair never takes any accountability for how his labour government contributed to the anti-immigration and distrust in politics that in my opinion decided brexit. It is as if he thinks politics exists in a vacuum. The sooner he understands his own role the better
Not me smirking when Rory told us we had behaved so we could see his pots 😏😉
Tax are high in UK now because of mismanagement of Tories if labour increases taxes it will mean that their is a problem in the economy rather than a problem with how Tories have ruled in the past 14 years
Were Rory’s pots ming vases? Then at 43 minutes he makes the joke for me!
I'm LibDem and very impressed by the manifesto, but will vote Labour tactically, as they can win.
You're my favourite potitician rory
The Labour manifesto in one word - conservative
💯
It's not that I'm tight...I'm a bit tight 😂
The Tories manifesto is just more of the same:
Higher mortgage costs if government borrowing drives up interest rates.
Lovely pots 💕
Came here from the podcast version just to see the pots
Lib dems should lean into voting reform much much much more. They should clearly state that they demand voting reform as a condition of being in any government. FPTP is the root cause all other governmental problems stem from. Things won't be perfect after reform of course, but politics will actually function well and therefore other reforms can be put through faster.
They did and lost the AV referendum vote
As above, this is exactly what happened in 2010. Unfortunately, the naïve LibDems thought that the Tory supporting media would actually publicise such a thing…
Which of course, they didn’t. Meaning that most people didn’t even know it was happening, hence it had a tiny turnout.
@@PhilAinsworth-qy4nsI'm starting to feel old. That was the irst referendum I voted in
It could just result in political stagnation where nothing gets done.
I love Rory's pots
I am an ordinary person and i have always read manifestos.
I now live abroad and flirt around politics and I still read uk manifestos because i know it is read here and sometimes copied. Especially conservatives wedge policies.
No money? They both say that but they don’t say WHY there is no money and where it’s all gone. The answer to that is it’s in the pockets of the super wealthy elite. The Tories have presided over the biggest movement of wealth from ordinary people to the super wealthy in history. The solution? Twofold. 1. A wealth tax. 2. Proportional representation.
