Nice overview! I have a 2004 2.7 manual similar to this, have had it about two years now and can say it's absolutely worth checking out for anyone at all interested in a sports car. Truly a fantastic, still fairly overlooked car
As an owner of an 02, 3.2 liter, 6 speed, 986 Porsche Boxster S with Fabspeed Exhaust, CAI, catless headers, IPD Plenum/TB, Numeric shifter, Bilstein performance struts, H&R lowering springs etc... I can tell you that the 986 "S" is the only way to go! Imo of course... It's almost a shame that so few people actually review it in S fashion while the vasr majority of reviews are on either a 2.5 or the 2.7. Again the Boxster S has a 3.2 liter flat 6 engine, brakes directly from a 911, a 6 speed transmission, a top speed of over 163 mph from the factory etc. It's one of the ultimate sports car platforms! (does technically include the base model) 😂 Just a phenomenal all around sports car!
Good review man, advice to everybody coming from a boxter S owner: If you're looking for a car that's fun shifting it isn't the best out there even though I swap my shifter for a Cayman S one. The problem is the gear ratios are high preety high, the second gear speed ends at almost a 115 km/h so shifting is not a thing in here.Besides that, the sound, grip and handling is outstanding👌
Yea my friend short shifter helps in these Porsche products. Gearing I’ve noticed is pretty tall in most sports cars probably optimized for track driving so will have to short shift out on the street
EVEN BETTER---Last summer, $15,000, well kept 986 Boxster S... UNDER 100,000 MILES. Keep your eyes open, bigger engine, 25% more power, tighter suspension and bigger brakes... Let's not forget the sport exhaust? ADD Stick shift, and you have the PERFECT budget sports car.
Nice car. Great video. I appreciate the Porsche Boxster. I have an order in for a 2022 Boxster GTS. Of course it is $118K fully optioned out, but I came to believe owning a true 25 year legend was what I wanted to do. I owned a 928 S4 about 35 years ago, and still own a Tesla M3 Performance with FSD. I would assume will get hate mail for going fossil but I appreciate the design and technology of one of the greatest cars in the world. BTW, I am keeping my Tesla which I love.
Great review once again, even though I sometimes get annoyed with all Porches looking the same I sometime forget that it makes the design timeless in a way. I'm looking forward to more of the used affordable cars like Porches, Caddy's, etc
find a car with higher mileage there's less chance of a ims issue with a car that has been driven, it has been blown out of proportion on the internet, find one that has been well maintained and drive the doors off it..like i do my 986 evey day
It’s nice seeing you interacting with your audience. You have good quality videos. Keep pumping them out. The views and subs will come. Great job dude! Cheers
Great review. Not so sure about the assumption you made about the suspension set up being the cheaper option though. Its virtually identical to the 996, later 997 and Cayman in terms of components and layout. The carbon fibre inserts on the steering wheel were Porsche options BTW and really expensive when new🙂
Thanks yes 911s also use a strut based suspension. Its the most simple and budget suspension setup possible and most importantly saves space. Multi Link and Double Wishbone is the best suspension geometry but costs more and takes up more space which wouldn't work in Porsches case for these models and is typically reserved for more high dollar luxury cars nowadays.
@@MeynMotorGroup I went on a tangent researching this and people were trying to figure out if they could swap a Bentley W12TT motor in there because it’s the same length as the H6 and dimensionally should fit.
Man that's crazy this tiny little car even comes with 2 trunks 😆 problem with turbo motors is the cooling but its nuts people even think about shoving a freaking bentley motor into this thing lol
Theres a channel called piston kirk this french guy with a 986 and he interviewed a guy who did an audi swap...but the results weren’t amazing bc the gearbox limits the power
i like how the interior changes colors with the top down. Ok LOL maybe that was just a bad funny. My coworker used to have the same car, yellow first gen Boxter and it was a cool
Nice review, Sir! First order of business, have a pre purchase inspection done by an independent Porsche mechanic! Second, IMS bearing should be exchanged as well.. someone told me before 60K miles... correct me if I’m wrong, ok? 👍🏻

The steering is shiny from all the wear. LOL. The new Boxster GTS 4.0 is sooooo nice, but priced beyond normal humans - actually, insanely priced. Wonder if this is 70% of the experience for 15% of the price. The big question is this or a Miata of a similar price? Thanks for answering with your thoughts - I personally want my roadster to have a lightweight airy feel.
Oh yea of course Boxster GTS is amazing lol 😆 but yes unfortunately way too much money. If you want that light feel, the ND 2 Miata I drove is amazing and better manual in my opinion. Many tend to swap the Porsche manual for a short shifter but def try this Porsche out its a fun car for sure

I don’t know if I’d say affordable, from what I’ve heard Porsche repair bills are extremely expensive. The MR2 is probably the most affordable mid engine car. I know there is also the fiero but that car is very old now. MR2s go up to 2005.

How’s the gearing? I ve heard that Porsche always neutered the boxster and caymans with tall gearing especially first gear.
Just know if you do have an IMS failure an Audi 4.2V8 fits nicely back there and I believe bolts right up to the stock transmission.
