Excellent presentation! Clear and to the point! Some info for you and your subscribers: I had a wrist injury due to "pushing through the pain" that would not heal no matter what I did. I went to MANY doctors that had no idea about the problem. THEN I finally met a Dr. who knew EXACTLY what was going on. It turns out that every human being has a DIFFERENT set of tendons and "sheaths" that the tendons are housed in. Sometimes we have 3 tendons with three different sheaths, sometimes two tendons in one sheath etc... Well, it turned out that I had three tendons going through one sheath and once the inflammation got to a point where the sheath was so BLASTED with swelling, there was NO WAY it would heal without surgery. I was in SO MUCH pain for so long that I immediately said, "Cut it open and release that pressure". So the next day, he gave me local anesthesia and cut that sucker open. I was in a great deal of pain for maybe one or two days after the surgery, but as he said, I would be pain-free within the week. AND I WAS! Moral to the story, if you feel pain DO NOT PUSH THROUGH! Do what Wanja did and STOP and assess the situation, relax and take a day or two to figure it out and adjust. 😉😉

Ok, storytime from my side. First of all: Join the Drum School, because in Extreme Metal you definitely need anybody to teach you the path. It's not like pop where you just play with the techniques you already know.
I am practising the Heel Toe Single Stroke Technique for about 3 years now. Everything was fine and I made some good progress compared to what I expected. About half a year ago I was stuck at 220pbm. I could go faster, by applying some high pressure and moving back on the footboard, so I thought: "well, now I just need to learn to apply more pressure and going even more back on the footboard", but everytime I did this my knees started hurting and my sitting position was horrible. I knew something is wrong but not what to do.
Luckily I joined the drum school about 1 month later, but for learning push pull. Then I thought why not checking out the Double Bass Course and this was the best thing that happened in my drumming career. There was even a video about exactly my problem, because Wanja had this problem too. He was able to fix it and that saved me so much pain and time. Now I am starting to get relaxed at 240bpm and able to push a bit until 250bpm.
I don't want to sound like a fanboy or an ad machine, but yes we are pushing out bodies to the limit in terms of muscle contraction, coordination, endurance etc.
and some advise about what and how to practise is in my oppinion indispensable.

I would like to add recovery. It is also important to allow the muscles to heal and grow. Some rest time can be as usefull for your progress as practicing 6 days a week IMO. great video.

SUPER helpful video man, thanks for this. This is something I've been worried about because you always want to avoid these issues pre-emptively before they ever even happen in the first place. It's hard to find information on this topic when it comes to metal drumming specifically, so it's great to hear your take since you have such an insane amount of experience.

Great stuff, my friend. I recently switched to ankle technique, and playing a lot lighter in the hands. Lifting the feet slightly before you ‘drop in’ for a burst, one should have plenty of power and kinetic energy in your pedals’ springs. Requires almost no physical effort, and frees you up mentally so you can concentrate and precision and also playing the different drums at the right levels and proper proportion to one another. You can hit at least 260-270 bpm and be relaxed enough to sip a cup of tea while you’re doing it.

beautiful (in some sort xD) information dear Wanja! im on this druming path also (pardon my english, LATAM - Chile here) im 27 now and back then i used to ignore all the "alerts" that the body-temple was sending to me; nowadays im into druming again (quit for like 6 years) and the issues with the body starts to show like right or left knee pain sometimes (love xtreme metal druming also) my elbows and the last one i've remembered was on my left wrist, how i overcome all of this? training mobility, flexibility and of course strenght training (not that focused on hypertrophy but in get stronger at least carrying my own body weight) people on youtube or instagram helped me alot and i really suggets all of you beauty ones that take care of our body-temple, its the only one we have and, a powerfull tool that can completly heal itself; i sugget looking on Instagram for: a master of mobility @vanja.moves / master of flexy @movementbydavid / for your knees @kneesovertoesguy / and for overall consciousness of the body @_attuned / for giving some of the masters that helpedme on this journey of self care and to enjoy at its max the things i love to do like drumming! take care of yourselves and if the own body pharmacy could do it then go to the doctor and please plase plase stay away from the Knees surgeries! cheers and love to y'all (Curicó - Chile)
