That’s weird because I’ve flown across the world a few times (in a plane much lower than this 🤣) and there are vast dark areas and the lights from the cities weren’t as bright as this 🤔
That makes no sense to me. If you were to zoom out (or up!), the cities would shrink and you would barely see the light. I stand by my opinion that this image is misleading.

This lets in more light to hit the sensor which records the image (like the cornea at the back of our eyes). Because of longer periods of light exposure on the sensor, the lights will turn out brighter due to overexposure. You can try the same experiment: light a candle in a dark room, take a long-exposure shot with a camera, then the result will be a completely brighter room in the photograph.
