851995STARGATE Oh, sure, but I suppose people are judged for the silliest of reasons. Including how white, or dark coloured you are, people will keep saying silly stuff if they do not like what´s happening.
+vermilion J He has a reputation worldwide as a uniquely gifted actor; a brilliant, courageous, and kind human being, and he's deeply admired and loved for it.....
+vermilion J one man doesn't excuse centuries of torture, murder, and brutality not to mention the disenfranchisement o half the human race...that's "So What". Why spend a lifetime working with lies, hypocritical illogic and political and economic agendas when you can separate from it and work with complete integrity.
+vermilion J I wasn't aware that Jimmy Saville had anything to with centuries of torture, murder, and brutality or the disenfranchisement of half the human race. He did a lot of damage in the way of molesting kids when he worked at the BBC but he wasn't at the BBC for centuries. Maybe Susan thinks that Jimmy Saville was the latest reincarnation of a series of people who grew up in different centuries.
I think I heard him say once or twice that he doesn't really care if people use the Sir or not. He said that it was great to get it but it didn't really matter or make him different. It may have been on The South Bank Show.
lwaves He's right. It really doesn't make him any different. He'd still be the actor and person that he is if he hadn't been knighted. It's the people who think of themselves as less who need to think of him as 'more'.
That makes me think a lot less of Ben Kingsley and a lot more of the knighted actors who ridicule him. Ben is taking the 'King' portion of his last name way too seriously.
..i agree..i am a 48 year old black male and in my experience when every single baby looked at me,all they would do was smile. Sometimes wave..better manners than the parents
Just want to say that having met the man twice, he really is this nice. Be prepared to discuss yourself and your doings rather than his if you have a chat, he really is interested in what other people doing far more than talking up his own accomplishments.
This is quite possible the most effective telling of this history ever because it wasn't preachy and it wasn't accusatory. This has and will continue to change minds. It deserves a broader audience. Good on you, Sir.
some strong stuff here. what a man. what a teacher, and an icon and leader. he is the least stereotypical homosexual i grew up thinking. he redefines it for a lot of heterosexuals. bloody brilliant..........i cannot comprehend how parents could kick their children out, for being open about sexuality. that is frightening.
Fastastic speech/Talk from 'Sir' Ian McKellen. Gripping all the way through. So honest, real and emotional. I don't suppose +OxfordUnion that you recorded the Q&A session which followed? If so, I for one would love to see it.
Being gay is another fundamental human right in a civilised community. I'm a Christian who does not practice sex but I don't harness any prejudice towards those that do. Decorum is required but one's private life is a life choice and does not impinge upon the freedom of heterosexual life. We should not need to label or segregate sexual proclivities as we should not discriminate against any social division. Being is living free of divisions which have no place in an intelligent debate. I agree that proclivities should be discreet in public but privacy is difficult within social media culture where victimisation has become a way of dividing us. Unity is procurement for rational discernment.
As a fan of the good Sir, listening to him was rather painful. At times you could really feel the pain in his voice as he spoke about this and that. And understand how he himself is affected of these acts of stupidity by homophobic assholes. Keep up the good work Sir Ian! You are bringing a brighter future for the next generations. The past can't be changed, but we can always do something about tomorrow.
Years ago we took in a Young gay man whose family threw him out, his father was a doctor and his mother a mayors assistant. When the same young man's brother came to a party I instinctively knew he also was gay and told him to come see me at home and for weeks we talked it out and I assured him that he would also have somewhere to go. He said that if his parents knew it would 'kill' them !! really !! their CHILD ! When the Younger boy finally found a job I told him that one of the first things that would come up is the question 'do you have a girlfriend ( he was really handsome) and I said do not let it pass, do not lie, just say no that you are gay if not your lie will get you in deeper and deeper and when it will 'come out' they will think you are ashamed of being gay. He listened to me and told them in the canteen on his forst day that he was gay but didn't have a boyfriend. They said oh ! cool ! and that was that !! I was able to be there for them but there are so many more that feel that they have no where to turn.
Native American tribes were well aware of gay people, often referred to as " two - spirit" people. Spiritual sanction. In many tribes, two-spirit people filled special religious roles as healers, shamans, and ceremonial leaders. They were often thought of as emissaries of the Most High.... organised religions are all going to eventually have epic face palm moments for getting things so wrong.
A fine man Ian. And a fantastic actor and understanding person. And by the way people are disgusting. Just because you are gay doesn’t mean you should leave your kid on the street or stomp at them till em die or anything like that. And I don’t see how that is different from isis. They both do what they belive in even though that hurts and kills people, scars them for life
I am from Iran and what he said about teenagers being hanged for homosexuality shocked me I looked it up in Google and it wasn't for being gay they were hanged for raping a little boy. I do not agree with such punishment for underage teens or execution in general .just saying it's very diffrent punishing for rape and being gay
Hehehehehehehe, “YOU SHALL NOT PASS!” I knew that was on the tip of his tongue right when I got here. Here in the United States, we should have addresses like these to the student bodies of every public school across the country. I am grateful that my own parents were the first people I told about being gay when I realized it of myself and that they have not disowned me. I still don’t underestimate that I’m one of the fortunate and that millions of teenagers are still being kicked out of their childhood homes for it.
a film popular in culture V for vendetta, his mask is used by many He survives in prison reading the note left by a lesbian woman ... a popular Opera "Peter Grimes" about... the difficulties of a Fisherman an and his assistants that die .... Wikipedia says ".... The work has been called "a powerful allegory of homosexual oppression"..."
I m rather compelled or propelled to mention this ... The British govt should watch this who send back LGBTQ people thinking it's alright to go back to colonial nations which they did recklessly in such an underhanded fashion
Of course I would never ever buy things they are advertising within his speech. Only ignorants would interrupt his talking with stupid toothpaste etc. etc. .... RUclips should learn to listen. People should learn to listen to each other.
In my country people are getting judged for being even..hetrosexual ...if u kiss eachother u should pay 80 dollar for breaking public shit or something so we cant freely do anything in public and ur complaining about gay people is even mire absurd i hope thinks get well for gays and hetrosexuals
scouse nofeyzulla what country? Well, if that's the case, you need to do some fighting of your own. Be inspired by Sir Ian. He is talking about The struggles in his own country.
Sure it's a nice piece of verse and well rendered by Sir McKellen. But what it does prove? One can adduce great poetry to defend just about any viewpoint! I am AGAINST mass immigration to the West, and thus hereby call upon RUDYARD KIPLING to make my case: "The Stranger Within My Gate" The Stranger within my gate, He may be true or kind, But he does not talk my talk- I cannot feel his mind. I see the face and the eyes and the mouth, But not the soul behind. The men of my own stock, They may do ill or well, But they tell the lies I am wanted to, They are used to the lies I tell; And we do not need interpreters When we go to buy or sell. The Stranger within my gates, He may be evil or good, But I cannot tell what powers control- What reasons sway his mood; Nor when the Gods of his far-off land Shall repossess his blood. The men of my own stock, Bitter bad they may be, But, at least, they hear the things I hear, And see the things I see; And whatever I think of them and their likes They think of the likes of me. This was my father’s belief And this is also mine: Let the corn be all one sheaf- And the grapes be all one vine, Ere our children’s teeth are set on edge By bitter bread and wine.
babayaga66 what are you talking about? Your comment makes no rhetorical sense. First of all, are you saying that Sir Ian's speech contains untruths? Which ones? Or is it some kind of blanketing fog of the lies? You will need to be more specific. Then you do this strange pivot to anti-immigration, a topic which is not discussed here. Or was this all some elaborate and bizarre set up so you could further disseminate your favourite poem?
My point is really very simple, even if a sophist like you would have it seem otherwise. But let me spell it out for you anyhow: Ian McKellen, like the bleeding-heart liberal he is, evinces a predictable soft spot for current mass immigration to the West. To buttress his case for "tolerance" of this phenomenon, he adduces a little-known verse piece by the Bard, which admonishes us to be kind to strangers. While the piece makes a good point, it does not necessarily apply to today's situation, nor prove McKellen's case. I myself would argue that mass immigration, esp. from Muslim countries, is in fact a clear and present danger to the West, as should become increasingly clear to anyone who has eyes to see and ears to hear.. So to give some added heft to my argument, I adduce a poem by Kipling that is every bit as incisive and trenchant as the piece by Shakespeare -- and that actually requires less verbiage to get the point across. Got it, Professor?
Would like to see Ian join with the LGB Alliance because he rightly recognises that more is still to be done to stand up for us Gays and Lesbians, and Stonewall UK is no longer a LGB-friendly group.
I'm not gay, but these stories about what some had to go through were truly abhorrent. Very strongly told by Ian too.
***** What do you mean by that?
I think he means people are still being judged by that
851995STARGATE Oh, sure, but I suppose people are judged for the silliest of reasons. Including how white, or dark coloured you are, people will keep saying silly stuff if they do not like what´s happening.

Some of the replies to your post show, as Sir Ian said, that the struggle for equality is not over.
This video has made a real impact on me. And I have to admit, it has changed the way I look at things.
"SIR" Ian Mckellen

That makes me think a lot less of Ben Kingsley and a lot more of the knighted actors who ridicule him. Ben is taking the 'King' portion of his last name way too seriously.

Fancy seeing you here! I love your videos!
1:20 I love it when he does this bit.. You can see his face change as he gets into character
He did that same gag way back when visiting my lowly comprehensive school. It was fucking brilliant.
He knows how to reach an audience. My spine shuddered when he stamped his foot.
What a lovely, lovely man. I really admire him.
I think I watched the first part five times LMAO
+Saruman The White With that name, i had to subscribe!
Planing your treacherous siding with the enemy were you?
STOP IT I've changed
SARUMAN, your staff is broken!
@Andro mache It's from Lord of the Rings.

A very deep message! Sir Ian McKellen is one of the best person in the Word!
Wasn’t expecting him to say his famous Gandalf line.. especially in the same vocal tone and manner...
omg what a time to be a live in sea of icons
a wonderful human being and a fabulous actor
Sir Ian is BRILLIANT!

Such a magnificent human being!

@Andro mache its his famous phrase from "Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring". He reenacts it every now and then for fun.

the great shakespearean actor Sir Ian :
好喜欢这个爷爷 啊,还有甘道夫爷爷,真的真的好喜欢
The murdered man in the case he was describing was actually also called Ian, not Michael.
Both Ian and Derek were the first gay double actors even though they were born a year apart from each other
Sorry where can I find the Q&A? Thx
+Hans Franz I will never ever unterstand why people wearing her "right sexuality" like a crown.
how is this considered the full address if it's cut short

Ironic isn’t it actor of Gandalph is gay and Dumbledore is gay in fiction. Maybe it isn’t ironic and I’m just too nerd I dunno.
He looks a lot like Tolkien did in his interviews from the 1960s. Funny coincidence.
Four words that have come to define his legend.
Magneto was right!
32 didn't appreciate this man? All done with no notes.
He’s a great legendary actor Ian mckellen is even though he’s a gay man just like his good friend derek Jacobi

I agree with McKellen that all people should enjoy equality. But, it seems the topic of gay rights is a monomania with him.
I’m gay myself but remain single
Not popular because... those "intellectual" elites of Oxford wouldn't understand Tolkien, right... (Lololol, but true. Modern times.)
😊
He's Gandalf the Gay 😀❤️
