I only knew Michel haneke from watching YMS reviews and that taught me to track down a copy of The piano teacher, Hidden and funny games. All were in their own genres, masterpieces, funny knowing a youtuber thousands of people watched would bring me here to realising Criterion are releasing one of those masterpieces.
I remember there was once that genius video on RUclips ( over 1 hour long ) on how Huppert was getting literally few lines right. They were recording postsynchrony in a studio and repeating over and over few lines of text. *La froideur, ça vous dit quelque chose?* She wasn't happy with the outcome, Haneke neither, so they were literally going through few lines of text for HOURS. Too bad that video got deleted later ... It really was great, I mean it has been 5 years or so since I watched it, I don't even speak French and still I remember that Froideur line. Haneke is very passionate director. So is Huppert when it comes to acting. Wonderful duo.
Manuel Gomez He's among them, but for me that will be between Godard, Béla Tarr, Yoshishige Yoshida, Pedro Costa, Terrence Malick, Philippe Garrel and Paul Thomas Anderson. There's also Lav Diaz, Nuri Bilge Ceylan, Aleksandr Sokurov, Asghar Fahardi, Leos Carax, Hou Hsiao-hsien, Tsai Ming-liang, Hirokazu Koreeda, Lee Chang-dong, Roy Andersson, Claire Denis, Lucrecia Martel, Lynne Ramsay, Frederik Wiseman, Jim Jarmusch, Agnes Varda, Terence Davies, Wang Bing, Carlos Reygadas and many more.
Well you also have to put the constant quality of his films, Philippe Garrel is not in his best moment, nor Roy Andersson, Godard or Sokurov, but with the rest i agree, though Tenebras Lux was total bullshit in my opinion..
I was about to add Chantal to the list myself. Unfortunately she's no more part of the greatest alive lists, and thinking about the fact that we lost two pillars like Chantal and Kiarostami in the last couple of years makes me incredibly sad...
i like his approach to long takes as we need more of that film instead of that chaotic style made famously by michael bay whose approach to editing and shooting gives me seizures.
Michael Bay actually plays out action without so much cutting. There's just always so much going on within the frame. You wanna see choppy editing watch Captain America Civil War. EXTREMELY seizure inducing.
He sorta overdoes it, in my opinion. It works well for scenes that are meant to be uncomfortable, such as this, but he uses them throughout the entire film.
It's running a risk I'd say. Especially if a director likes a certain actor and look, but the general audience doesn't and/or styles change. Good cut aways and/or angles fortify a story. Buys the actors a little more credibility whether they're skilled or not. And can build on suspense, reveals, and pinnacles more rewarding for the viewers subconscious I find. Be it sex, violence, horror, etc.
It's a well-shot scene, but for me, Haneke uses this technique far too often. It's fine to have certain scenes be filmed with long, uninterrupted takes, but he uses this for like,, 90% of the film. It makes the film feel really dragged out and slow at times. I'm not saying he should cut the whole thing like a music video instead, but a little bit of variety in the pacing would've been nice. It honestly comes off a bit lazy of him at times (probably saved him loads of time by not having to do coverage on set).

Yes. And then he said that he could only consider two films to have done that correctly: In the Realm of the Senses and Salo. Those are the only two films according to Haneke that show sexuality in a suitable way. It's his opinion sure but not only is his reasoning not really explained well, but the idea that there are two films that show sexuality well is just, as I said, ignorant.

I can't resonate with Reygadas somehow. Chantal Akerman would be the better alternative for me.
