If you in Australia get grants for your research and salary, why be connected to an university at all?
Would not spending all your time on your research be a better option?

Hi! Thanks for the question :) Scientists and academics would love to spend all their time doing research, but you need to be at a university because universities have a lot of facilities and equipment that you wouldn't be able to pay for by yourself, even with a big grant. Universities also cover a lot of the basic costs, like wifi and office space. Universities also pay for scientists to access research papers, which are kept behind a paywall and can cost A LOT of money read. But working at a university has a lot of benefits too. Being surrounded by other researchers and working on teams helps you come up with better ideas. Teaching is also a wonderful way to interact with the scientists of the future and stay up-to-date. But you don't have to work at a university to be a great scientist, you can work for the government or industry, which have completely different rules and requirements.
