First watched this 9 years ago when it came out. Watching it now because I'm starting up hockey again. Just as good now as it was back then. Take it from me you are never too old to learn to play hockey and to continue to improve.
I'm starting a beginner hockey skills and power skating academy a week from now for my first time ever @ 26 yrs old! My 17 year old bro won't skate circles around me for much longer...
Dude, I teach high school physical education in Ohio. I have been trying to find a video for stick handling that can challenge students. This gets it done, thanks man.
@@samanthamatautia9769 it's going great. I've watched all of Jeremy's how to hockey videos like 50 times to improve my game. It's all how much you want it. Put the time in and it will pay off
Thanks for the post. I've been a basketball player my whole life but have always loved hockey. Recently found out there are leagues that I could try. At 40 I'm still in pretty good shape and gliding is easier on the knees. Also, thanks for keeping your video clean. It's getting harder to find good clean info.
You have done a phenomenal job teaching this technique. You really have a special gift for teaching. If you were to do this video in an indoor environment with a professional video team you would have a wonderful product many players would study. Don't stop doing what you are doing - you are a natural!
@HockeyWarrior14 Yeah that's a given. I wouldn't say always, even though people say to always have your head up, even the best players take a peak the odd time
@nelsoncards They are Bauer something or another, I just bought them at the end of the season I think there might be a V in there somewhere with the XX's
Thank you for this video.... I wish you had made this video 10 years ago....... I started hockey with passion, but no teacher. Only friend told me a little bit about how to play, no formal knowledge...until now, I watch your video.....
These how to hockey vids are great!! Seriously helped me improve my shots and handling. Ive played soccer since I was 7 and I just now at 22 picked up a hockey stick lol. Ive been a fan for years but there wasnt a whole lot of hockey going around here in NC, U.S. But again thanks to these vids ive been able to step my game up and even join a team.
im glad finally somebodys know how to stick handle, bottom hand is all power, top is all control. people should also know why there so many rightys here in north america compared to europe players. if your right hand dominate, you should be a lefty, if you left hand dominate you should be a righty
Let's be honest here. I thoroughly enjoy teaching and coaching the game, I study the pro's, teach what the pro's are doing and break it down for everyone to understand, but I would get dusted by pro players. To make the NHL hockey must be an all encompassing aspect of your life from about age 13 and you need ridiculous talent. I'm happy just teaching it and playing a few times a week :) I do alright in the Men's leagues, haha
@netWorkGreEn Yeah you are right about that, for those who are just learning it is ok to take a peak while learning the move, but when you are trying to perfect the move do it with your head up, so you aren't skating around the ice with your head down, that's just dangerous!
@jrmanful Things will be a bit different when you get on the ice, but you just need to recognize what is different and adjust. My best advice is to make your off ice area as "ice like" as possible. That is why I use the shooting pad and green biscuit, I find that gives me the least amount of friction. You could also try using a shorter stick when practicing off ice, when you put skates on it makes you an inch or two taller and that messes some people up.
Hey Jeremy - great video! One trick I learned with the shooting board is to use vinyl/electrical tape to make an equilateral triangle shape on it, maybe about as long on one side as your hand, and try to stickhandle around it. Helped me with toe drags a ton.
This helped so much, my hands were somewhat quick (I thought so at least) but I was using the wrong hand to control the stick, then I used the toilet paper roll trick for around 30 minutes and I managed to only use the correct hand after removing the roll, and it definitely helps you learn how to do dirty toe drags properly. These videos are definitely super useful, thank you Jeremy!
Here is a tip I learned my self many people wont tell you and don't and it can really change your total game. It can be a pain to practice at first but its really worth it once you get it. Vision is so important, being able to see the opponent and react according to what hes doing as your approaching him. So what you have to do, is practice puck control with out looking at the puck or ball, look above at eye level, don't focus your eyes and look down at the puck or ball. Focus above you.
I'm just getting back into Hockey. My first pick up game is this Friday. It's been 8 years since I've played. This video is a great refresher. I like your stick a lot. I used a TPS Response when I played and it was my favorite. Unfortunately they are no longer in business anymore.
@aerosmithacdcbonjovi the roll wouldn't work as good, but it would work. Basically all you really need is something that fit's around the stick. I think Paul Kariya would use water bottles.
Coach Jeremy,,,, Thanks for this awesome video. However, Im surprised you didnt mention even once, if Im not wrong, that the most important thing in stick handling is ' Keeping Your Head Up '. So that new/young players can get used to watching the field, knowing where their teammates and opponents are. Keeping the head down and doing all these things in the video perfectly will be a big mistake.
he clearly has fairly slick hands, and stick size is all about preferences. I play with a stick that is past my eyes but i do a lot of long across the body deeks, so to achieve that reach i need would need longer stick.
My stick is just below my chin with skates on. I think the one I used in this video was a bit longer than my game sticks and I was wearing flip flops, haha
@howtohockeydotcom it's not to late to start if you try hard i'm 14 and i've been playing for about 6-7 years and i've seen people our age just start and don't want to play anymore because they get hit to much during the season, if you can keep your head up and can shake off a hit then go for it!
This helps a lot bc my hockey practice is a little over 30 mins away so I have to practice at home and as none of my friends as most of them are girls play hockey so this helps so much for helping me practice at home
Wow you know alot of stuff. I just started watching your videos today and I learned so much stuff already. I've never been in a team before or had anyone teach me anything. Great vids keep it up.
I love using the golf ball for stickhandling I didn't know you have soft hands to do that thats so sick I am a dangler but i'm not a superstarov. These videos are must watch videos they will teach you a lot.
Your not supposed to actually carry it there. The trick is to be able to CONTROL it there. It comes in handy when you get a bad pass and need to grab it while in stride and bring it in front of you, or if the puck gets knocked off your stick and you need to recover it.
I started playing hockey for the first time last year during the summer. While I was playing in a beginner league they did not teach stickhandling at all (well they only had one practice a month). All we practiced was skating, which was helpful, but I would like to do something during COVID since the rinks are closed. I want to learn more stickhandling and I saw that plastic snap-on thing and was wondering what it was called? I know I'm going to try to use my lower hand on the stick and I want to avoid starting to learn things the wrong way why I am learning how to do it. Thank you. Great video!
lower your bottom hand a bit and you'll have more control, quicker release & added power for passes/shots, faster movements, and you'll be harder to stick check. head up and knees bent like a game situation. also try using one of those steel balls both the softball size and small size. that teaches strength control (just don't use your game stick for that). kudos.
if you dont want to spend a whole lot of money on the hockey sites, you can pick up "smooth hdpe sheets" from a local plastics or signage company. this is the same material that's used in the official hockey pads, get 1/8" or 3/8" thick depending on how much you want to spend. a friend of mine also got white board paneling from home depot for $14, little bit of pledge and it pretty much does the same thing. gl!
Hey Jeremy What do you suggest for my situation: I can dangle and deke very well... While I'm looking down at the puck. Usually within 3 seconds of keeping my head up, I'll lose the puck. What do you reccomend I do to improve stickhandling while keeping my head up?
it will mess up new composite sticks for sure, wood blades are meant more for smooth cement. it will still gradually wear out but not nearly as fast as a composite blade would

i cant practice outdoors so i have to practice everything in the living room. i started using an old roll of painters tape because it slides really well and doesnt ruin the furniture if i miss my target. its not ideal but might be an idea for others who cant use anything hard that might destroy everything
I found out today there are two kinds of Green Biscuits, one for passing, the other for shooting (called a Snipe Green Biscuit). do you recommend practicing sniping on ice, or using it on a different surface like a smooth cement of some kind?
Well that's good to know. Top hand is WAY easier to use when going back and forth. Just started ice hockey but wow, thought I would have realized this before when playing floor hockey.
I'm 13, i took skating lessons a couple times but i have trouble with crossovers and backwards skating. I'm working on it. I love this guy, he is in it for passion not for the fame or likes and subscribers.
Instead of the snap-on thing to not grip your stick, you can also use a PVC pipe or even an empty toilet paper roll. It works the same.
Thanks bro!
Omg thanks
Thanks for the PVC Pipe idea, because I can't find this product anywhere
