- It's quick and easy! I'll show you how I mounted the beacon mounting plate. Unfortunately I can't actually mount the beacon until the airplane is painted.

Good video and cool plane. I was a Flight Engineer on Fat Albert 2001-2003
A 5 minute explanation with a 2 second demonstration! My God in Heaven - Tell me the time, don't build me a clock
I ..WAS.. going to just put this on for the dog while I put some clothes on to wash, but 8 minutes later, here we both sit watching this, much the wiser about beacon mounts.. never underestimate how interesting the smallest component install might be :)
Neat watch.
Id have thought best place would have been under fuselage beneath where you sit.
Thst would give lots of warning light!
Their nav/position/strobes also mount essentially the same way. Excellent products.
Those mounting screws for us older folk ---> AN507-8R8
I plan to do some kind of beacon on my RV build too.. I hate when people are on the ramp or taxiways with their strobes going.. it just seems more obnoxious to have the strobes on unless you’re taking the runway.
More great ideas to help get the job done. Keep up the good work and thanks for the time you invest in bringing these videos to us.
WOW! Got Trent , BrYan from Just Plane Silly and now Mr Mark all in one day!! Happy New Year to you and yours ! Thanks for the update and Blue Skies!
To date 244 likes and no dislike. That says alot about your video. Thanks for sharing and happy new year! 👍🏻✌🏻🇨🇦
Great to know option for the beacon mount and mounting location. I usually leave the beacon switch turn on so it helpful to see if you forget to turn off the master switch.
The red beacon is also less likely to blind someone while taxiing or in the runup area. Wingtip strobes are right at eye level.
Nice! So I've seen every video you've made including the other channel.
other channel??
@@stevew8614 Yes, Mark did start another RUclips channel about building kit planes. I guess only true fans of his work know about that... LOL
I enjoy watching you build your plane. I was wondering if you have ever considered using manual focus and wide depth of field so that the picture isn't constantly going in and out of focus. Thanks!
I probably should. The problem is where I place the camera. I point it at what I’m doing but them my arm or hand gets in front of it at a different focal point so the camera refocuses. I figure in another 50-60 years I’ll actually figure out what I’m doing!
Very informative and educational even for a 172 guy. I just purchased a AeroLED SunBeacon ll as a replacement for my old (1973) strobe on top of my vertical stabilizer, Have you/will you posted any info on using shielded cable ??? in replacing strobe and white position light also in the tail, AeroLED recommended using #18 shielded cable. Cant find 4 conductor so will two 2 conductor shielded installed side by side be ok ??? Thanks
Have you considered using weather pack style connectors? Is there a reason you would do a splice instead?
Are you purchasing pre-made 4- wire, 5-wire bundles for your lighting? Do you use shielded wire for the strobe/navigation light combo?
Don't forget the hole through the skin for the wires!! Before paint :-)
Yes! I realized I forgot to drill the hole in the middle after I uploaded the video!
@@KitplaneEnthusiast the wonders of the distraction that is making videos for RUclips.
I could have built the rudder in 2/3rds the time if I had not set up cameras and edited. I admire your efforts.
Mark, are you also putting in Landing / Wig Wag lights in both wings? They look cool when landing.
Yes. Both from AeroLEDs.
And do you add the hole for the wires now or do that later?
Hi, thank you for another very interesting video!
A question...will you use a back plate on the inside of the aircraft to sandwich the skin between the strobe light Mount plate or just use washers..?
Cheers,
Phil
No I don’t think that would be necessary. I’ll just use a washer and locking nuts.
Kitplane Enthusiast thank you Mark. 👍🏻
I believe it was EP4 you used the plastic snap in grommets. could you tell me where you got those and maybe a part #. My brother and i are building a super duty and your tips are very useful.
FWIW Steinair has a variety pack of those snap grommets. Mine just arrived couple days ago.
You mentioned that to change the beacon all you would have to do is go in the belly hatch and disconnect the wires and then remove the beacon. However, if you leave a service loop of your wiring inside the fuselage with connectors, you can change it totally from outside the plane as you'll have some slack to let you pull the connectors outside the fuselage. However, I doubt that you'll ever have to change the beacon unless it is damaged from striking something - those LED's will probably last longer than you do! LOL!
Yes you are 100% correct. As long as the connector is smaller than the hole in the skin, it would be much easier to do everything from outside the plane. I’ll have to make sure the connector can fit through the hole! Good observation.
Stager the quick connects , use moisture proof connectors.
Before you put the grub screw in get a small drill and make a dimple in the mounting plate so the grub screw fits better and cannot move and the light come off the plate from vibration
Excellent idea. I used to do that to the main shaft on my R/C helicopters!
Its something I was taught to do at work many years ago especially on pointed grub screws as they tend not to bite into the facing material
It would have been nice to see the light illuminated.
What brand is your bench hardware drawer system? If you don’t mind me asking.
I’m not sure. Got all three from Amazon.
Why wouldn’t you use a doubler or a plate with threaded holes on the inside? Why is there no water seal?
Why would I?
Do you know the part # for the adapter you used?
You can get that info from AeroLEDs
I think every plane should have a beacon. I always get annoyed by planes taxing around with their strobes on.
I'd lose the screw in the long grass.
Lol I prob will too!
pst, pst, you forgot the hole in the center for the wires to come through. Just saying.
I know!! I noticed that after I posted the video lol. Luckily that hole can be drilled anytime.
