Always thought Jeff Tweedy's speaking and singing voice sounded like Jerry so it gives me joy to see this collab.
Jeff sounds so much like Jerry in this video! Great to see a Grateful Dead/Wilco crossover :).
Cheminti is everywhere! What a legend! The man knows where the good stuff is and he chose them all
Wow Jeff is such a good Jerry!! More of this please!!!
Hell yeah !…. Nels please grant us more of these divine gifts….. Jeff sounds awesome too. Drummer in the pocket , key boards raging along …. Sax man tickling the groove. Yes please !….
4 or 5 guitar players
I’d rather have 1 Jerry
Cool to hear Nels Cline’s sound integrated into a Dead song. Not two things I would have put together but it works! Tweedy sounds great.
Great to see Phil Smiling. Last time I saw him was in 1994 , Fall Tour , Boston Mass. He had His Tye Died On. Miss those days.
Great to see Jeff doing this with Phil. I dug his stuff since 'being there', and happy to see him pull this off!The whole band is great!
Jeff is my new favorite vocalist for all things post Jerry, hands down! He sounds so good here!! And the guitar is on point! This whole group is just fantastic!! Phil's smile says it all. ~LONG LIVE THE DEAD~
I've never heard anyone praise Jeff Chimenti's singing before. Interesting...
@@herbiecactus6687 Tweedy! 😆
Thank you!
Jeff.....Jeff............................tour with the collective..Nels....all of you...good lord this is great.....
Caught this show. Outstanding! Jeff could definitely front Dead + Co on a wilco break.
Jeff Tweedy sounds like Jerry. Never realized that. Big wilco fan for a while, now totally digging the dead
Yes have you ever heard Tweedy give an interview? His speaking cadence is even more like Jerry's.

Wow, Jeff's vocals sound really good and youthful
Never thought Id live to see the day where Nels Cline would take a solo in a Dead song. Talk about the crossing of genres...amazing! Such an epic line up...glad that Chimenti found his way into this and that Phil isn't holding DeadCo against him. Karl Denson too! Jeff Tweedy sings these songs with absolute perfection!
Not the first time! But maybe for Jeff?

Nels is a bad, bad man 🤘
Nels played an incredible run of shows with Phil and Friends at the Capitol Theater in fall 2017 or 2018. Check it out
Why would Phil hold D&C against Jeff?? I don't think there's any bad blood there, Phil just doesn't want to do whole tours and probably prefers leading his own ensemble
Phil looks amazing...and talk about a supergroup. AMAZING!!!!
Nels fits in well. Jeff sounds great. This works a lot better than I would have guessed. Great stuff.
Wow.... Tweedy has a comparable voice to Jerry.... Who knew... He fills that vocal space better than anyone else... IMHO
Agreed!
wow, was looking thru the comments to see if anyone else noticed as well! good call
agreed
Jesus I am so busy I literally keep forgetting this happened and I haven't taken it all in yet!!!! I love it.
That was the most inspiring version of this tune I’ve heard in a while. Jerry had such a great voice but many guitarists covered his style and material. There aren’t many guitarists I can’t think of that sound like Nels. More importantly, I don’t think other guitarists could play in his style because it is so unique.
You need to check out Jrad, this was decent but definitely not inspiring by any means.
@@franklee6301 I know Jrad… but if I’m inspired, how is it not inspiring?
phil is lovin nels' playin
Are you really The Bob Zmuda? I love Nels, too.
Gawd dammit this is so good. Warms the heart.
This is a damn good rendition of a timeless classic by Hunter/Garcia. The band really swings on this one! Karl's saxophone really adds to the sound.
Phil “Fucking” Lesh is an Immortal God of Thunder roaming the earth. He is every bit the pillar and cornerstone of the GD Jerry was.
Im a lifelong Dead and Phil fan, but I have to say without Garcia and Hunter there wouldn't be a band as we know it. Even the Pigpen argument doesn't work, he wasn't composing the majority of the songs.
But I agree that Phil is a cornerstone, of course
How great is it to be alive to witness this man still up there strumming the base??
@@bernlin2000 brother it is a blessing beyond measure
Jeff’s voice sounds great on this
This song made me smile so hard that my face hurt. Thank you.
It's amazing that JG could sing and play like that. Just plain amazing.
Never realized how similar Jeff's voice sounds like Jerry.
Great vocals! Serious Jerry vibes
I love Phil, Tweedy and Nels to the moon and back, but I must say Denson is the star here.
the music is the star
No, it’s not an nfl game. It’s a group mindfuck experiment. No one really failed this one.
Sorry if that came off preachy, I’m tripping on some of the cleanest drip drop I’ve had all year. Never thought I’d hear Tweedy and the Dead.
give me this all day, every day
I've never really noticed it before, but Jeff has a decidedly Jerry-ish tone to his voice.
Yup -- same vocal range and that weary-and-wise, slightly grainy tonal quality.
My gal and I were saying the exact thing. Conviction was the word she used. I love Wilco and love the Dead. This was peanut butter and chocolate.
Jeff's fit to the music was almost a little shocking. I have a feeling we could see him tapped a lot more for Dead-adjacent projects.
Called Nasal
AMAZING ! BREATH TAKING PERFORMANCE !!!!
The JAM!!!! ☠️🙌🎉⚡️⚡️⚡️
bass great. Lesh Philling.
Get the original Grateful Shred players on guitar and this is an all time lineup. Tweedy sounds great!
Damn nels’ shirt is fire
Observation: The guy with the Jerry like guitar, who sounds a lot like Jerry, and *even* moves his fretting hand like Jerry, misses everything Jerry was about, musically. Then along comes Nels, and he's totally himself in the moment, and in doing so, captures *everything* Jerry was about musically. Ironic.
Wow, I just can't get enough of this performance. What a great mashup of talent. Really energetic groove with everyone on their game. !!! Thanks much for the post !!! 🤩😍😳
This is straight 🔥 get the 🚒 💥🤯
Karl Diesel killing it
He's so fun, isn't he? Love KDTU!
Fantastic
Fantastic.
It's a shame the fans broadcast didn't have that great of a sound. Nels was fire. Tweedy sounded great. Poor Stu didn't look like he had to much space and Graham was too loud. Even then, it was still awesome to see this.
They put the main act on the smallest stage, for reasons we'll never know.
The problem to solving replacing Jerry seems like everyone felt like they could do it with one person. Jeff plus Nels is the closest anyone has come.
Love the sentiment, but I don't think that's a problem anyone has been attempting to solve.
When I grow up I want to be Nels Cline AND Jeff Tweedy. I'm 47. Been listening to Wilco since '95!
Love Karls Tiny Universe
I like it!
That Sax solo is sick!! Phil's face during it says it all
sounds like fun 😁
Nels is on it! Sorry the mix has him so thin. Jeff is a great Jerry sub for vocals!
Nels is 🐐
Yeah I'm really wishing Nels came through better in the mix. Molo sounds awfully boomy too
Nels cline is in a class by himself
Really? I mean, he's extremely proficient technically, but the soulfulness of jerry's playing ain't there, imho
@@robertwhough no mention of Jerry my friend..
@@robertwhough Nels is easily one of the best living guitarists
I love it! I have some music snob friends (former) that would talk shit about GD and go on about Wilco. I hope they see this! 8 )
Listen to the music play
Grin medicine.
Jeff sounds a lot like Jerry to me. I always thought that and he's nearly just as great if not on the same level
I agree totally
He can sing the Jerry parts well, but he didn't do anything with his guitar the whole show. Not close to the same level : )
Karl Denson! The guy has soul. Dead & Co. should hire him.
Nels showing the Dead fans, and the Wilco fans how to do guitar. big O
the whole band though, really FUCK!
He certainly played the same licks in every song of the show, but I don't think that's showing anyone in the Dead world how to do guitar. I liked many of his contributions, but he was very repetitive.
@@sweetdaddyjangles7194 wow, that is very unlike him. he is always improvising
Is that Karl Denson on sax? Damn I wish I was at this show!
He's fantastic. He's doing a David Bowie show at Park West in Chicago October 7th if you are in the area. Just love him touring with The Stones the last few tours. Check him out in Shakedown from this show if you haven't seen it. Good stuff
Dude was the MVP of the show. The festival was a cluster fuck though, and the show was really short. Kind of disappointing overall, knowing the potential they had.
Like being on a giant runway and never taking off.
well boys, pack it up and shut er down…it’s all been done now. excellent work.
The thumbnail looked like Jack Black
This is the comment I was looking for. Thought it was just me.
Hold my beer!
Is this what the FANS stream sounded like?
Do you have the full show!?!?
no
Jeff looks so full of wine
And other intoxicants.
never the twain shall meet, or not
Where can I stream? I heard the U.S. Blues on Instagram…. Where can I hear more?

Haha. John Molo does look like Bryan Cranston. 😂
As soon as I saw Molo, I told my gal that Molo is the one that knocks.
I recognize Nels. Who is the other guitarist? (I haven't heard Phil's bands much.)
Stu Allen did the first guitar fill. And Graham Lesh a little later.
@@IzitAllGoUnder ok. Thanks
I clicked this vid because I thought the thumbnail was Jack Black. Anyways, what's everyone up to? Oh me? I'm just writing this comment! TTYL
karl, put the tambourine down
Lol, I read this comment right as he flubbed the shit out of the tambourine rhythm. 🤣
Toss up for me bettwen nels/jeff and john mayer. He has the essence of the guitar down and is like a jeff a good not not pretty singer.
I. Would love to drum for Phil I started out as a heavy drummer then it went to Jazz and then The Dead style I consider myself the most multifaceted drummers to exit
And don't forget most humble, too.
@@harrassee at least exited...
What song is the bass playing ? Sounds like the wrong one.
lol
lol, so true...
That's because you're musically challenged. Take your pills.
Phil does his own thing, that's what makes him Phil.
Lol
Tweedy is far more convincing (and less grating) singing Dead tunes than Mayer.
Mayer's voice is horrible. The reason why I can't listen to Dead and Company
@@jamesamerman2772 You and me both. He's a great player, but his voice is grating and his songs insipid.
Mayer has grown on me after the last tour. His guitar playing has evolved and really knocked my socks off at Wrigley in June. Tweedy was the weak link in this lineup. Yes, he can sing the Jerry songs well, but he didn't contribute anything musically the whole show. He appeared to just be going through the motions , and even left stage when it wasn't his turn to sing. This was the first Phil show I've seen that didn't have any exploratory jams, and it really seems like that was because of his choice of friends. Both sets were barely an hour long, and Tweedy killed the second set momentum with the Helpless Franklin's > Via Chicago > Ripple. There was enough time for an Unbroken Chain, Dark Star, Other One, Eyes, or many other jam vehicles, but the set got killed so Tweedy could sing again. The first set got me pumped, but the second set never took off to where it could have gone.
@@jamesamerman2772grow up
don't like the snare sound. great to see Phil.
Jeff's got the belly like Jerry, that's for sure. 🙂
talk about a song that's been played to death
May it never stop!
If you plant ice you're gonna harvest wind
Beats Wave To The Wind 😂
We’re blessed as fuck. When Phil Lesh is gone, these kinda shows will be the 5-8-77’s for the next generation’s generation. I’ll put money on dat. ❤️
Literally. Over and over. Because it’s f-ing great.
Your 'assignment' is to listen to 'Blues for Allah' over and over.
Love it but damn that drum tone is not my thing. This drummer, here anyway, does nothing for me. All my 2 cents. Phil looks great.
the mix is really drum heavy... wonder why?
also the drummer is pushing instead of creating a deep pocket...
@@MrAvlandrew can U do better? has phil asked you to play with him?
Do that's John molo bro
Sorry that's John molo my friend like what what that's Sinbad you know
John Molo looks like a turtle trying to eat a bowling ball when playing drums. Weirdo
stop focusing on other peoples looks and enjoy the music... or not.
Depressing
Tweedy looks a little bored. He should take his hand out of his pocket ...
@@robertwhough casino circuit, here I come
@@robertwhough naw, he aint bored. Just his steelo.
I agree the drummer and Phil were pretty average here, in fact the drummer took a jam song and made it too straightforward and even brought the solos to an end multiple times at the wrong time. That being said, pretty cool to see Nels and Tweedy, who are great artists in a different genre, especially knowing that Tweedy was inspired by the Dead and the Beatles.
I’ve tried so many times but just can’t dig Wilco or this dude’s voice. Am I missing something with Wilco? Absolutely no groove.
I think you are missing something.
check out Side With the Seeds off of Sky Blue Sky
Sky Blue Sky is an excellent album.
Maybe not, we all have different tastes, but there is a lot of overlap between the two band. Also, the the influence the Dead has on Wilco is very different than many of the second gen jam bands. However, Wilco does get down! I would watch a live version of Wilco's Impossible Germany.
Spiders (kidsmoke) from A Ghost is Born...now that grooves! Personally I also love the really early stuff as it's very similar to Uncle Tupelo but I know there's a lot of Wilco fans that dinnae like it...for some reason.
Jeff might sound great, but his re-entry with the vocal, over top of soloing??
No way man, This music is born out of generosity and that man is a control freak, obviously, beginning the vocal completely ignoring the rest of the band. Hey dude, are you even listening tothe rest of the band? No.He cuts to the final lyric and this ends the song. Sorry, but his bad attitude totally ruins it for me. Only dude up there not having fun. Stuff a sock in it and split dude, take the bad attitude with ya. A shame cause it could’ve been great with some of those players. It’s got it’s moments, but the star trip? No.
I think it kind of worked when he did that at the end. Made it sound more interesting.
Hmm, I received it as the sax player not knowing when to get out of the way. The festival was kind of a disaster though, so I'd be surprised if they even had working ear monitors.
get over yourself, Tweedy sounds and did fine, Nels too.
Wow -- this is what I don't miss about certain types of Deadheads. MINDREADING and assessing the motives based on their observations. The guys who loudly talked crap about Bobby all night at the Dead shows I went to. "I'm going to make up some narrative with villians because I'd rather do that than chill and enjoy the music because I KNOW ALL!"
Sorry for bustin' on ya, dude. You are correct that Jeff sounds great though.
@@herbiecactus6687 I agree, sax had a full feature solo earlier. I took as "hey boys don't forget we got another verse"
