the best part of using linux is that integrated gpu on intel cpus, are faster and powerfull compared with windows. i tried Minecraft on windows and debian gnome 12, with an i5 2410m. it runs way much better on linux. and, intel hd 3000 supports OpenGl 3.3 vs OpenGl 3.1 (windows)

In my experience it was the opposite lol, on linux the max fps I got in 1.16.5 was around 150, while on windows 7 I got around 200 :)

You should try win 10 next, it's running like a charm (except paint 3d for some reason) on my T61, wonder how much t420 will be faster in action.

The partition that I deleted in the video to install linux actually was windows 10 lol, I used AtlasOS so it only took around 1.2GB of RAM on idle, but I don't really like windows 10 or 11

Honestly, i like Mint, but its rather mid weight than light weight. I tested several Gnome distros on my Macbook Air 2012, dualcore, 4G Ram. Fedora, Ubuntu without snap, Pop OS, Zorin all ran well enough for light office use cases, but Ram is a bottleneck for multitasking. I think gnome became more efficient and can compete with xfce. I then tested archbased Endeavour OS with lxqt2 and this was faster in any perspective. Uses 800 Mb Ram. So for weak hardware this maybe a good option.

I used arch once on this laptop but it was just a pain so I decided to not use it again, I installed linux mint cuz it uses only 500mb of ram when I use the awesomeWM
