I think everybody pretty much did this at least 5 years ago, especially for the swapfile speed. Also chuck the optical and put in a drive caddy. Somehow the BIOS updates have gone missing lately. I dual boot with Windows and it works as well a new noteboook. Dirt cheap and gives priceless street credibility.

    T420. The last great Thinkpad.
Have a couple here. Main one cost me £38, c/w 4GB and no disk, but the 16 x 9 screen, BT and Modem. Upgraded with 256GB SSD I had laying around, Ultrabay with 1TB spinny disk, mini dock, and 8GB RAM. Oh, and an Express card USB 3. Cost, all in, about £75.
Runs Linux Mint like a dream. Boots to a usable desktop in about 35 seconds.
I bought a similar one for my Mum, and have a spare of my own, because Thinkpad.

Bought my T420 used in 2016 and it never let me down. Now it was about time to bring it into 2022 and I gave it a serious upgrade:
    - 16GB 1600MHz RAM
    - 250 GB mSATA SSD (replaced the UMTS card and allows to keep the HD for data storage without sacrificing the CD/DVD)
    - swapped out the i5-2520m against a i7-2670QM
    - For the CPU upgrade and also to utilize the higher speed RAM, a BIOS upgrade to v 1.52 is needed
These upgrades make a huge difference! Performance is more than suitable, everything runs snappy even with a lot of programs/files opened in parallel.I spent about EUR 130 for the upgrades and it's more than worth it.This machine will easily go for another 3 or 4 years.

Nice video, congrats! Just subscribed your channel.
I bought my T420 three years ago, second handed, i7-2640M, 16GB RAM, 1 TB HDD. Installed a 500 GB SDD, and it’s my daily driver for Data Science. Although it came with Windows 10 installed, I’m a Manjaro user.
I love the keyboard and the track-point, and the fact you can open it easily and expand it in many ways.
Because it was overheating on CPU heavy tasks, I recently opened it, cleaned it, and replaced the thermal paste. It’s working well again since then.
I’m looking forward to watch your follow-up video about using T420 with Linux. Keep up the good work!

Most old thinkpads only need an SSD and max up the RAM and they are good to go another decade!
... I am not sure if that speaks very well of them, or the fact that there is really not that much advance in laptops.

    • @kwiat126p3
      @kwiat126p3 Год назад +5

I did exactly that - bought 8GB T420, replaced old SSD with brand new and it is a great machine in 2022. It’s running Windows 10 and I’ve installed Office 2021. It is a very convinient device for daily use - watching RUclips, Netflix, writing, making money transfers etc. I don’t play any games so it is not a problem for me.
The only thing I have to do is cleaning the fan and replacing thermal paste on CPU because it’s getting hot sometimes.
I recommend buying T420 in 2022 with 8GB RAM or more and SSD!

The T420 was the standard issue laptop at my high school (in 2011).
It was a similar spec to the one in the video; 2nd gen i5, 900p display, Windows 7. But it had only 2gb of RAM…
That thing powered through 4 years of school. But it was slow… and wear and tear really shows. “The soft touch finish wears away really easily, the matte keyboard eventually becomes glossy, and
anything that is a sticker eventually peels off.
After graduation, I upgraded it a fresh install of Windows 10, 8 GB of RAM, a 128GB SSD, a new OEM battery, and a new application of thermal paste.
Man did that all make a HUGE difference back then. It was more than useable for office work and browsing with no issue,
This was 2011-2012, so we all tried pushing the Intel HD3000 integrated graphics to play Minecraft at minimum settings and 20-30 fps. But we didn’t complain.
    Good times 😂

I just saved one from the trash and it had the 900p display and 2Gb of RAM too ! I thought somebody must have a go on the sticks but apparently, this is an official variant.
I added an extra 4Gb of RAM (had only a 4Gb stick at hand), a 250Gb SSD and slapped Arch Linux on it. Runs like a champ for a 11 year old machine !

You forgot to tell them to remove the battery and photograph or write down the product ID for use to register the Windows 10 OS. The upgrade from Windows 7 Pro was free for me. it is now digitally signed. But not Windows 11 compatible.
I read you can upgrade the CPU to an i7 if it doesn't have one, however, it will not be the 8th gen or higher required for Windows 11.
As far as I can tell the TPM is only 1.1 and can not be upgraded to TPM 2.0
It does have secure boot if I recall right and you can install the OS to use UEFI.

Optical discs are not really obsolete. Quite the opposite. Especially when you are doing redundancy backups it always makes sense to backup really important things on multiple medias. So making a Blu-ray or DVD backup of your files and also keeping them on USB HDDs and flash drives, is something that should be done if you can. You don't wanna put your trust and all your precious data into the hands of Flash and HDDs alone. I had more HDD and flash drive fails in the past 20 years than i had with optical media. Just don't buy the worst and cheapest discs you can get. The Ultrabay method, with an extra Drive, can also come in handy if you wanna do a Mini-raid and Mirror your System and all your files to another drive inside the same Laptop. Better safe than sorry.

I use it with an i7-2640m 16gigs of ram, two ssd's (on in the mSata slot) and with an HDD in an HDD caddy put into the DVD drive slot.
I know it can cost a lot of money but when you cannot tolerate the terrible viewing angel and colors of the original screen, then I really recommend the FullHD IPS mod, which I did on my laptop.
Since I use the laptop mostly for web browsing, video and netflix watching, therefore a screen upgrade makes a much bigger impact on the usability, than a cpu or ram upgrade.
You can pick up the circuitry and the full HD IPS panel for the screen mod in Alíexpress or Ebay.
    It really worth it!

    As someone who had been using T400, T420, T530, T440P, P50, P50 (my second P50), T570
The T420 is good if you prepare to use Windows 7, window 10 won't work smooth on it, and don't expect any performance on it, imagine it's only good in case you want to have your kid getting familiar with a GOOD laptop.
I am a performance user, so there might be plenty of people who use the T420 or x220 feel the urge to roast me.
At least try the T430 or T530 (the 15 inch screen is really good even the lowest spec screen, much much better than any 14 inch HD from T410 to T440), or the T440P, which is good for performance, but the original touchpad is kinda shite.

    A few things:
    1. The T420, T520, X220, and W520 all can be flashed with coreboot without needing an SPI, so it MIGHT be worth investigating using a 3632QM if there's no chipset in compatibility. If there IS an incompatibility, I'd bump the models to the T/W/Xx30, flash with an SPI flasher, and then definitely use the 3632QM for those extra 2C/4T while staying at the same TDP :)
    2. These laptops have a full height mPCIe slot that also supports mSATA, and can support WWAN NICs (important to flash the BIOS to remove the whitelist or go all coreboot if non-Lenovo FRUs). You can always look at dumping in an mSATA SSD with a second drive being HDD for massive storage or another SSD, potentially for dualbooting.
    3. Get the right WLAN chip in there and these are phenomenal hackintoshes :) (get the perfect chip and you even get bluetooth and continuity!)
    4. The ExpressCard slot can house an NVMe drive with an adapter from ThinkMods, so there's even an option for a THIRD SSD.
    5. The optical drives can be swapped out for either a second battery or a FOURTH drive.
    6. Extended batteries do exist, but you can also get slice batteries which drain first and can be separated after depletion. The X220/X230 in particular has a battery slice model which covers the whole base and you can get up to a full 24 hours of operation depending on how you use your system.
    7. The default antenna config is 2x2 but some laptops forego the built-in webcam array for a third antenna for a 3x3 WLAN. WWAN is ALWAYS available with two antennas unless you get the i versions (just why?!)

Btw I never owned a thinkpad until Q3 last year. I have high standards for performance with computers. At least running Linux, these machines really don’t compromise with a bit of upgrades and could definitely be your daily driver. Even stock configurations, they are great secondary machines!
