-What tuning do you use on this pedal steel? - I’ll have two number 9s, a number 9 large, a number 6 with extra dip, a number 7, two number 45s, one with cheese, and a large soda.
Great video! Love how he says, "That's a secret, don't show that" but then lets the camera film it. Don't worry Robert, even if they see it & set their pedal exactly the same, they're not going to sound like you. I think someone could sit down and play your rig and they wouldn't sound like you. Awesome stuff. Thanks for sharing what you did!
I'll tell you what Robert Randolph's "secret" is, and it has nothing to do with his rig, his gizmos or his setup. The secret is HIM! He is a natural musician with incredible technique and a great ear for pitch. His demonstration of the ebow on his Fessenden is spectacular and, like all really great musicians, he makes it look EASY. What impressed me as much as his musicianship is the joy that seems to shine through in everything he does. Great vid - a real inspiration. Thanks for posting.
@@ldog446 was gonna come say that. People think a skill like playing an instrument just falls out of the sky... This man probably practiced for hours every single day! But the secret to doing that is loving it
“Natural?” He worked hard to get where he is. He started young and was surrounded with musicians who brought him up in the sacred steel tradition and he’s talked in interviews about playing/ practicing 8 hours a day. That’s hard work.
Did it? Please elaborate. Change career paths? Decide to settle down and start a family? Take up serial killing? Or do we just enjoy hyperbole and clichés?
This guy mods literally everything. Lol I love it. A big thank you to Robert, though. He was really reluctant in showing his secrets. But this video has inspired me so much, not only with his gorgeous playing, but to think outside the box and not be afraid to mod your own gear. Thank you.
I've known about this guy for what feels like ages now, but never actually heard him play live. Damn, have I been missing out. I'm buying some concert tickets right now
EmpressOfWyoming58 Insane guitar player. Basically an absolute master of the guitar, he knows everything. There are people that are great at guitar and then there is Guthrie Govan....
+EmpressOfWyoming58 seriously, listen to some of Guthrie's music. Then watch done interviews with him. He's basically a virtuoso, and a really cool, humble guy
Never heard of Guthrie Govan? You might want to rectify that situation... he may very well be the worlds greatest living electric guitarist. ruclips.net/video/EJmPFBWukq0/видео.html
i didnt remember his name, but when i saw his rig, i knew i had found the guy that blew me away on austin city limits from about 10 yrs ago or so. he has a much bigger pedal steel thats almost another 1/4th longer. he played that steel like johnny winter! fast n wild! this dude can jam!
Everybody makes fun of this Robert Randolph cat with his overuse of "you know" and other things but this dude is mad talented. I'd be happy to have half of his steel slide guitar skills.
RR and the Family Band was the first concert I have ever seen where I didn't know who they were going in, and I giggled like a schoolgirl through the whole show. Catch these guys if you can.
Saw him in Orlando than ran into him on the street later on that night and he was one of coolest cat I've ever met. He invited my GF and I to hang with at a club but we didn't want to impose on him so we declined but he talked with us for a few and took some pictures with us. Kind of wished I'd taken him up on his offer so I could of picked his brain musically but we figured he'd be bothered all night by people so we didn't want to be those people but he's definitely a super cool nice guy!
Robert I enjoy your talent man, you know! you are the best, you know? Love it, only he could say it so many times without people getting annoyed! Well at least most people
I knew he was good, like real good, but I didnt know he was THAT good, this guys like legit prodigy virtuoso he has that instrument down and tweaked out!
Kenny Wayne Shepherd makes the POG 2 sounds GREAT with a "regular" guitar... Not sure what RR is on about or if he's taking the piss. Love his stuff though, I've seen him several times (5???) and he's been fun every time.
Does the same go for country singers & bluegrass musicians, that use the Banjo ? Do the country singers listen to & play African music, because The Banjo 's origin is from Africa . So like you said, :They had better" .
If you have a pedal steel guitar and you want to experiment with the ebow you're better off if you try it with a lap steel bar (like the one R.R. uses in this video) instead of the much heavier, bigger, bullet shaped standard pedal steel bar. The light weight and the side grooves on the lap steel bar will give you much more control for those fast gospel style riffs. Oh yeah...and check out Home Depot for those brackets & duct tape. I'm gonna pass on the farts. My playing stinks enough as it is!
8:07 "You surpriiize 'em with that kind o'crap, youknow... " :-D Liked his sound and liked his chair - he literally works his ass off on it, respect. Funny personage, pretends having limited vocabulary, words-parasites, but he has the skills and his own distinct sight.
This video right here is the most valuable 15 min and 15 sec I had in my entire lapsteel journey... Thank you so much for sharing Could listen to that man for days and He's right Asher guitar are IMO the best music shop when it comes to lapsteel and not only (they've got their own sets of guitar strings - awsome quality & 5 stars customer service) On a side note: not surprising he's got "all the chicks"... He has been playing through BMW speakers the whole time hahahahahahaha
-What tuning do you use on this pedal steel?

Great video though and Robert is an ace
Not a lot of people will get this, especially watching a video like this.
Brilliant
Made me LOL legit!
can't believe I read the sentence to the end [sad face]
One of the most underrated players ever! Absolute genius!
How is he underrated? He's very highly respected by all accounts.
I agree 💯👍. My friend
one of the few rig rundowns where they actually play the equipment. love it.
Randolph Rocks!
Great video! Love how he says, "That's a secret, don't show that" but then lets the camera film it. Peter Pringle only got one like so obvi your not righr
No such thing as a natural musician. He worked hard
@@ldog446 Exactly. Give him credit for the hours put in.
@@ldog446 was gonna come say that. People think a skill like playing an instrument just falls out of the sky... This man probably practiced for hours every single day! But the secret to doing that is loving it

Loved this video, this guy knows his shit and has loads of personality. I could hear him play and talk about his gear all day!
"Rickenbracker"
- Dr. Steve Brule
He may have said that on purpose because on the old Rickenbacker lap steels and of course the basses had a big huge bracket hanging over the pickup
chippchipp1 we
WAS
I remember the first time I heard Robert. It was his video "I Need More Love", and when he broke into his solo, it changed my life forever.
Did it? Please elaborate. Change career paths? Decide to settle down and start a family? Take up serial killing?
Or do we just enjoy hyperbole and clichés?
@@JM-vf3tx Not all changes are drastic.

Wow. Some really cool tones from his setup. Talented dude.
"How did you end up with Jeff Beck's amp?"
"I took it from him."
LOLZ
Steel Guitars cause me to make faces & cry. I love Steel Guitars.
This guy is just unbelievable. Can't believe I'm only finding this video 8 years later.
This boy is one of the greatests I've ever seen... great guitarrist!
This dude is shockingly good. Saw him on one of the Eric Clapton Crossroads DVD's. Blew my mind how good he is.
I was able to see RR and the family band before he played with Eric. I saw him at the norva in Norfolk Virginia. Best concert ever.
I've known about this guy for what feels like ages now, but never actually heard him play live. Damn, have I been missing out. I'm buying some concert tickets right now
lonly boys
All of the gear doesn't matter, he's the man!
The Hendrix of the pedal steel.
Chandler Crane
Never have heard of Guthrie Govan.

Hendrix? More like Robin Trower!

seein him live is freakin amazing!

He's light years above me, sounds great! Must be a great guy to be around
Those sounds caress the soul , makes me dream.
Robert Randolph: what a fucking stud. Dude has confidence for days. Loving it.
Phil Keaggy uses an EBOW too.
Most versatile steel player I've ever heard
6:22 is just incredible
Around 2:10 and 2:55, him just jamming, it's absolutely stunning.
I could die a very happy man listing to RR play that pedal steel.
If you watch, he uses the pedal to pull the string as he works the wah. I think that's what gives it such a vocal quality.
Saw him in Orlando than ran into him on the street later on that night and he was one of coolest cat I've ever met. He invited my GF and I to hang with at a club but we didn't want to impose on him so we declined but he talked with us for a few and took some pictures with us. That!!!!!.....is a magical instrument
You know a guitar player is really playing directly from the soul when they are subconsciously mouthing out the notes as if they were singing it.
Outta u r mind Bru
This is better than any 10 of these put together
Actual playin
Robert crushes
Helluva musician right here !
this guy is awesome, and so is that 13 string
Best Rig Rundown of all time!
Robert I enjoy your talent man, you know! you are the best, you know? Love it, only he could say it so many times without people getting annoyed! Well at least most people
thats the best video I have watched all year, Robert you are a cool Kat, thank you Premier for sharing this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Very cool. FF
The lesson he is teaching is that he did everything first and that no one can do it as well.
Bro…. That country picking was big tune! Big up!
This is way better than the new rig rundown
Love this guy. He's a riot.
He reminds me of my buddy Dwayne.. may my friend be playing loud in the by and by RIP Dwayne (Jerry) Johnson
Wow, he's a real star!
The POG2 definitely has its place with regular guitars. Jack White is the one who first influenced me to get one years ago.
What an amazing player - seems like a great guy too :-)
Wow he’s so charming and funny! Those sounds! Makes me want a pedal steel....
@okamasphere that is what was put on the very first rickenbackers
I knew he was good, like real good, but I didnt know he was THAT good, this guys like legit prodigy virtuoso he has that instrument down and tweaked out!
The most musical rig run down period. My goodness lol
Did he take the camera to show the pickups? 😂😂😂😂
Awesome! More music should have this!
Love the tune
Hot Damn this guy is straight fire! That sound makes my blood boil!! Beautiful sounds, I'm floored.
The chair. I ❤it.
counted 906 ¨you know¨ s ... Brilliant sounds!
+Luis Eduardo Galindo No, 85 times (roughly)
+Andreas Brix close.... 79 times
Shit, you're right! You made me re-count :)
@pull75 Just the way he talks...saw an interview with him, Sounds extremely humble.. Probably hasn't comprehended he opened for Clapton! :P
Pete Drake had a nice vocoder/wah sound on pedal-steel, but man that wah-wah he's using is awesome.
Pete got that from shot Jackson who invented the talk box later on pete gave it to Peter frampton who recorded the iconic live album
Thanks for the video, quite interesting. he seems to be a really nice guy as well!
That wah sounds really cool, I wonder what mod he did to it for that nice vocal quality...
Could listen to thing he does with Ebow all day!
The good stuff Robert! Heck yeah!
That Screamer Fuzz is Bad Ass!!!
Kenny Wayne Shepherd makes the POG 2 sounds GREAT with a "regular" guitar... Not sure what RR is on about or if he's taking the piss. Love his stuff though, I've seen him several times (5???) and he's been fun every time.
What a treat! Yesssss.
That would’ve REALLY pissed me off losing Buck’s Tele!
That's baddass that he also likes and listens to country music too!!!
he better! its where the instrument started.
Does the same go for country singers & bluegrass musicians, that use the Banjo ? Do the country singers listen to & play African music, because The Banjo 's origin is from Africa . So like you said, :They had better" .
great lesson
Duct Tape and Bailing wire brother.
That’s So Smoothe
weird and very cool - I'm waiting for my 8 string sx to arrive.
2:58 idk if this is a song or on the spot but that was sensational
Love that guy
That man is awesome 😎👍❤️

this guy is just incredible though, I thought Al Perkins and Rusty Young were great, which they are but this guy is wow wow

the cusack screamer fuzz sounds amazing!!
Yow!!! Tear that thing up, bro! Dang, son, y’all’re plaaayin’!

History of steelguitar can tell“Before Robot an'after”It's lumine forgotten instrument.
this guys a riot.

You're wrong. The secret is obviously the chair.
Amazing
Did you guys inquire about that Mesa Lonestar Classic combo on stage???
Loved it - great video - how was the tone produced at around 10:50?
love !
I have the 535q but it aint sounding like that in any setting.. he did some major changes on it
Sounds like Angels Singing. Amazing

He didn't want us to see any of this, but it is what it is y'know?
This guy is a fucking genius.
