There are actually some lovely areas in Erie...just like every city, you have some more run down areas but all in all Erie is a pretty decent place. My sister lives in Fairview which is a suburb and it is beautiful, tranquil and seconds from Presque Isle Beach..
I'm in agreement with many of the other commenters: this place doesn't look bad at all. Some of the houses haven't gotten enough love, or have been cast off (and orange-tagged) entirely, but overall it doesn't look despondent at all, not like Camden NJ, Gary IN, or some of the other places you've shown. I don't know when you recorded this, but it feels like it was a Sunday afternoon: "Lazy day, Sunday afternoon; like to put your feet up, watch TV." but I digress ... A few notes: (1) 0:15 that brick building was a sad story: those acorn finials, of which [at least] one was missing, once capped some handsome brickwork. (2) 0:30 the collage on Atkinsons barber shop is GORGEOUS. Kudos to the artist! (3) 2:25 those guys emerging from the car looked like family/friends going for a visit - decent folk. (4) 7:36 another interesting mural, on the side of the "Palace Centre." I couldn't make out what it was, but it looked fabulous. (5) 9:05 another sad story: I really like Luxfer, a standard feature of 30's-era buildings, but alas in most places if it's got Luxfer it's forelorn. But I really enjoyed the ride through Erie. Thanks for taking me along! Thanks!
Thanks so very much for the comment and the super thanks! This one in particular was done on an early Friday. I normally dont ever do early filming, but I was trying to get ahead of a snowstorm. As for the degree of how "bad" something is, I dont really look at it in terms of a comparison to other cities. That would put me into a corner real quick and leave me with a very limited platform. Each city has a unique vibe to it usually, and not everything is what it seems to be. After filming over 100 cities at this point, I want to try and bring more to the channel and see what ya'll like and what you prefer more of. I have a lot of ideas that I will be experimenting with. So not everywhere will be a Detroit or Camden type thing. I like new adventures and keeping it interesting, for my own sanity :)
In the 70s Erie was amazing. Grandpa and Grandma lived at 5th and Cascade and it was a beautiful neighborhood back then. Everything was nice in Erie back then. 🩷
Believe it or not, Erie today is actually one of the better Rust Belt cities. It hasn't gone completely to hell like Youngstown or Flint have. Those cities are too far gone to ever make a full "comeback". Compared to those places, Erie has a chance and has a lot of potential.
This is one of the nicer looking areas of the Midwest I've seen. It's pretty clean and well maintained. And it looks respectfully safe too. If I wanted a decent house for cheap and didn't want to live in a big city, this looks like it's a good place to be. Good job Erie PA!🎉❤🎉❤
My dad grew up in Erie in the 60's and 70's. I grew up there in the 90's and early 2000's. Unless you work from home, in education, in the medical industry, for the police department or fire department, for PENNDOT, have mechanical or extreme handyman skills, there are virtually no other survivable wage jobs other than maybe in the banking and insurance industries in Erie. It's pretty sad because Erie is a neat town. It's tough watching it fall apart.
Erie died when stuckeys on route 90 closed. 😢 Presque isle park has always been cool. I got a water tick in my head there. The ship 'Niagra' was built there.
To be fair, the nature just isn’t very attractive on snowless winter days. Trees are all bare, sky is grey, and what leaves are left from being packed under snow are just flattened mushes of brown.
Erie has lost major manufacturing. General electrical was once a major employer in erie. Like all former u.s. companies they moved to foreign countries..
Ive lived in Erie my entire life. These are some of the most rundown neighborhoods in this video. Actually went past my old house on 22nd and Wallace in this video. Rough area no doubt. But there is a lot of nice neighborhoods to live in too. Not the best place to live, but far from the worst.
Whenever I look up real estate in these areas I only see expensive places. I wonder if the less attractive places are already owned by the state and not up for sale. Thank you for sharing.
I grew up in Erie in the 2000’s and saw it’s decline in real time. Everyone that says “Oh it’s not that bad”…you just didn’t see the other side or probably never lived east of State St. 🤷🏻♂️
The downtown or commercial area actually looks well kept, although many vacancies and not much activity. Looks safer than a lot of busier US cities, but I could be wrong.
I agree. Erie has lost much of it's manufacturing and economic base but it seems an effort is being made to keep up the city... we aren't seeing garbage on the streets, as is the case for many cities. Also, videos taken in winter tend to make urban areas look worse than they really are.
It is. Especially when you compare Erie to other Rust Belt cities our size. It's not like Youngstown or Flint, where most of the city is extremely dangerous day or night. Erie does have its "iffy" parts, and there are some shady characters downtown, but it's not nearly as bad as the aforementioned two cities.
So it's better to narrate what it was, has been and what happened. Erie, PA, right on the Interstate 90, on the shores of Lake Erie has been hit with the same issues of a lot of small cities. But when you think of its population of just under 95k it is holding its own. You'd see much worse elsewhere, Erie isn't a major draw for new homeowners but it's not as bad as other towns that've lost industries, mines shut down, steel mills, etc..
What happened to Erie Pennsylvania is people just realized there's BETTER places to LIVE! Places with better opportunities, better weather, newer looking, up to date buildings & houses, healthier life styles, less crime, less poverty, higher paying jobs, and definitely not so depressing. Erie is a very depressing place to live. I lived there from birth for 21 years and then i moved out west and i never looked back ....
Erie has a re development problem. If you ignore the lack of any effort to remodel these 100 year old homes, the rest of the place is pretty up to date.
Left Erie in early 60s to move to California. I enjoy keeping up on Erie because it was a great place to grow up and It appears to be implementing new ideas to encourage growth.
The bay front has been transformed with a convention center and hotels, as well as a great minor league stadium and civic center. Maybe drive around a little more on your next stop, hopefully?
Erie was one of the locations they chose to film The Road starring Viggo Mortensen for its post apocalyptic scenery. I believe they filmed at the beach which on a gray day like you show here fits very well with the theme of the movie.

I grew up in Erie. Nice in the summer, just no opportunities after college so I left.
It looks like most of the houses are well maintained. This place is better than most of the others you've filmed.

I have Youngstown uploaded on the channel. Flint will be uploaded soon. Thanks for watching!
You are in East Erie. It has always been like that.
I can't tell you enough how much this reminds me of Buffalo's East Side. Remarkable. 🎉

Good job Erie PA!🎉❤🎉❤
1st from ontario canada ( ottawa here ) good morning and thanks for the upload.
Well people always paint a bad picture of Erie PA But the fact of the Matter (This is Home)🇺🇸💯
Looks tired, run-down, Rust Belt. It doesn’t look actively destroyed like a Gary or East Cleveland.
I'm from East Cleveland and it was bad even in the mid 90's! That's when I left and move to the west side.
I grew up in Meadville in the 60's and 70's and we went to Erie often, especially to the Peninsula.
I was born and raised in Erie. I see you filmed the east side of town, which has always been a mess.
Love it as always!! 🙋🏻♀️🖤☕📦📻📺☎️📷

or moved to Texas. or South.
I visit Erie every year, I did not see this part. Presque isle is a good place.
Presque Isle is in Millcreek. This is east side Erie.
Maybe on a sunny day, most of the thesis places won’t look so drab and depressing?
My daughter went to college in Allegheny, I remember Erie being a very cold place, may be not like Buffalo but it was cold.
Those roads are torn up, but some nice homes mixes in. Not a complete wasteland.
Winters are harsh there with lake-effect snow. The freeze-thaw cycle stresses out road surfaces. Same with other lake shore towns like Buffalo.
Is there access to beach?
Love seeing all your drive thrus thank you
Thanks so much for watching!
@@hoodsnhollers you're welcome

Presque Isle and Waldamere are the best things about Erie. It's not a bad city.
The downtown or commercial area actually looks well kept, although many vacancies and not much activity. Looks safer than a lot of busier US cities, but I could be wrong.

You can definitely make an horror movie here for sure
Its a good thing you did blurred out their windows. Good to protect other people's privacy. I appreciate it.
Hi! Erie it’s here, erie is so pretty, when you at the right areas. Try going to waldameer! Or….the Bayfront! Or even down at our beaches!
Has Merceyhurst University, which is one of the few income sources.
Downtown sure is quiet. Looks as if many places are open for business, but no takers.
Looks about the same as when I grew up there 45 years ago; maybe a little better actually.
Doesn't look too bad with all the cars around.
Nemo Somnia reliquit?
It's a nostalgic, nice scenery.Every home has its own personality. It's a wonderful scenery. 懐かしい いい風景だな みんな 個性があっていいお家だ 素晴らしい風景だ
Grew up there33yrs wish I knew what rds your on
Whats the crime rate in Erie is it low or high. I'm from Ontario Canada.
Why many towns in USA looks abandoned? People from all over the world are moving to USA every year, where they are?!
Oops! Ran a red light through the "Cultural District". LOL

Whatever it is, it stays beautiful.
25th & German; 608 E. 7th street 💙💔
Love the quiet.

This is my neck of the woods. AMA.
Keep in mind the meaning of the word "Erie". And then, do it again.
👍
Yeah, it's Erie. Real Erie.
Some of it looks nice, but it certainly has some sketchy parts.
Left Erie in early 60s to move to California. I enjoy keeping up on Erie because it was a great place to grow up and It appears to be implementing new ideas to encourage growth.
This is the CITY OF ERIE. The surrounding counties are much better and where the businesses have gone.
Place LOOKS depressing and it IS!
Best city. USA...
Your videos are excellent.
Thanks so much for watching Jennie!

We Must Do Better Now not Dwell on the Past 😊
Go to est 19 street
film the west side of erie
dreary erie, the mistake on the lake
This is the East side of Erie. You don't go here after the sun sets.
Looks like the early 70's. Time passed Erie by.
Look like here Williamstown pa old and run down
East Side not the best to show
everything looks worse in the winter. its not terrible. least its not chicago. yet.
You were by my house at housing
Buildings are ho hum
No Money here

I mean… not the worst
Fun fact: Lake Eerie caught fire in the 1950's!
THAT was a river in Cleveland lol
Looks like that place loves litter bugs 😅
A grim, harsh place, best avoided.
c'est triste, c'est moche.
